En primer lugar se analizan y describen los procedimientos habituales utilizados en la génesis del nuevo modelo mediante un estudio detallado de la secuencia operativa, que tiene lugar desde los cálculos preliminares de viabilidad del diseño hasta la entrada en el proceso de producción en serie del vehículo. A continuación, se describen las características constructivas y los materiales más novedosos utilizados en la construcción de carrocerías, lo que se complementa posteriormente con el estudio estructural de estas y el plan de seguridad pasiva, en el que se realiza un estudio pormenorizado de las pruebas de choque (crash tests). Seguidamente se aborda la teoría de la colisión, para lo que se realiza un análisis exhaustivo de los efectos de una colisión sobre la carrocería y un estudio de los distintos sistemas de fuerzas con el fin de entender su comportamiento después de un impacto. A continuación, se describe el equipamiento necesario para realizar las reparaciones de la estructura de la carrocería y los distintos sistemas de diagnóstico de daños estructurales, desde el más elemental hasta los sistemas informatizados más novedosos, teniendo como base los datos técnicos proporcionados por los fabricantes de vehículos y los constructores de los equipos de diagnóstico. Por último, se indican de manera pormenorizada los pasos que hay que seguir para la reparación de la carrocería en la bancada y se describen las tensiones y las sobretensiones que se pueden producir en el transcurso de la reparación. Dado el espíritu altamente didáctico que ha guiado la preparación de esta obra, el contenido de esta nueva edición incluye las innovaciones más recientes en este campo, que se desarrollan con un lenguaje claro y preciso apoyado en un gran número de gráficos, dibujos y fotografías; ello favorece la fácil y rápida comprensión de las cuestiones que se abordan para que el lector alcance sin dificultad la capacidad necesaria en esta interesante materia. Asimismo, al final de cada unidad se incluye un apartado de Cuestiones y de Actividades propuestas que permitirán al alumno poner a prueba lo aprendido, además de repasar y fijar sus conocimientos para cerrar convenientemente el estudio de cada unidad.
