Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Cabinetwork: For Manual Training Classes Knowledge of the correct use of ordinary wood working bench tools must be gained before any attempt is made in the construction of furniture. Such knowl edge is imparted in the author's earlier volume, Ele mentary Woodwork. Elementary Cabinetwork is not to be used merely as a reference book at the instructor's desk, but is designed as an aid to study and is to be placed in the hands of each student. The instructor should see that the projects to be made by each pupil are of such a type as will demand a systematic study of the text. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woodwork for the Grades: For Use in Manual Training Classes This course in woodwork is intended for use by pupils who have had no previous experience with wood-working tools. It is planned to develop the subject in a systematic manner in harmony with well established pedagogic principles. The lessons consist of instruction in tool usage, followed by a large variety of designs for articles useful in the home. The first lessons should be thoroughly mastered so that the 'interest and progress in construction will be genuine and of educational value. It is no waste of time or interest to learn by use of study pieces the fundamental tool Operations. Such a plan if properly followed will result not only in far larger educational value, but also in deeper interest and 'a better display of finished articles. The advantages of using a complete, definite text are beyond the belief of those teachers of shop work who depend upon oral instruction or the use of reference works. The use of this text has not only demonstrated the advisability of using a text as a matter of economy of the teacher's time, but has also demonstrated that with this text the pupils will accomplish as 'much in the sixth grade as we have heretofore without this aid expected of the eighth grade; while in the eighth grade as much value is received as by other means could be gained in first year high school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Training for Common Schools: An Organized Course in Wood-Working In preparing this book on "Manual Training" the author has attempted to be thorough rather than complete. No attempt has been made to add anything new to the subject-matter, but only to arrange well-known facts so that they will offer as systematic and complete a course of study as is offered in any of the older organized courses. The arrangement of the text as herein presented is the direct result of five years' teaching the subject of wood-working to beginning classes. This class work was preceded by a number of years of shop work as a journeyman machinist and a factory foreman, as well as by a four years' college course in science and engineering. Help in preparing the text has been gleaned from so many fields that it would be impossible to make direct mention of all who have given valuable assistance. The author wishes, however, to acknowledge the aid given by Mr. Charles E. Emmerich, principal of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, and Mr. Paul W. Covert, head of the manual training department, who have allowed such freedom in the conduct of classes that it has been possible to make all parts of the work measure up to a class-room test. Acknowledgment is due Mr. Otto Stark, head of the art department of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, for his earnest and careful criticism of the models, drawings, and photographs. This criticism has added much to the value of the text. The final drawings from which the cuts were executed were made by Mr. Edward Stark, of Indianapolis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training in Woodwork: Designed for Use in Manual Training and Technical Schools; Consisting of Three Parts, Carpentry, Wood-Turning, and Pattern Work The character and object of this book is set forth on its title page. It is a manual designed principally for the as sistance o-f_students in wood-work in its various branches as well as a help to the instructor. The author has endeavored to present the subject in sucha manner as to make simple the transition from' the easier to the more difficult operations. The exercises have been selected after an experience in this line of instruction, covering aperiod of twelve years and will be found practical in their application to students in manual training in technical and industrial schools P'art first, Car pentry, is intended to cover fioiii sixty to seventy hours of work. Part second, Wo - od Turning, not to exceed thirty-five hours. Part third, Pattern - Making, fifty or Sixty hours, thus making a course which will be found to touch the principal points in the three branches of wood - work commonly taught in manual training schools or schools of technology or engineering. It has been the aim' of the author to give in this course just enough instruction to enable the student to study the problems for himself, thereby the better fitting him for the construe tio-n of patterns for any machine which may [be assigned him to complete his 'course in pattern - making, which is changed annually. A perusal of this work will disclose many features which the author feels sure will commend themselves to in structors and others interested in this department of school work. With the hope that these pages may prove a valuable aid to students and teachers alike, this work is presented to the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Shorter Course in Woodworking: A Practical Manual for Home and School Teachers, parents, business men, and mechanics are demanding that the training of youth be more practical. A satisfactory system must meet the demands of the pupil or the individual student, that his interest and enthusiasm maybe so aroused as to call forth his best efforts; of the educator, that the subject may be presented to the pupil in the way best for his general development; of the mechanic, that the most practical methods may be adopted; and of the business man that the pupils be trained in up-to-date methods and modern ways of thinking. This book is not meant to conflict with courses in woodworking now in use, but rather to fit in with any system; for the approved methods of work - the result of the experience of. Generations of workmen - should be known to all teachers, pupils, and individual students. No set course of procedure can be adopted by all, nor is there any necessarily logical order in which many of the tools and Operations must be taken up, although some are naturally brought into use before others. Therefore the material in this book is so arranged that it can be used in any order, and any desired topic can be referred to readily. When class exercises are begun with oral and manual demonstra tions many pupils do not readily grasp and assimilate the new ideas, technical terms, and details during one demonstration by the teacher, and it is believed that a general manual which can be used as a text book and reference-book will be helpful and time-saving to both teacher and pupil.
