Book excerpt: Currently, significant numbers of public school administrators are nearing retirement such that finding qualified replacements is a challenge plaguing school districts throughout the United States (Governor's Education Reform Study Commission, [GERSC], 2000; National Association of Elementary School Principals & National Association of Secondary School Principals [NAESP/NASSP], 1998; Institution for Educational Leadership [IEL], 2000). The purpose of this study is to examine the institutional and professional worklife experiences and personal issues of public school administrators, examine satisfaction levels as a manifestation of these institutional and professional worklife experiences and personal issues, and examine how satisfaction influences the intent to pursue advancement in the pipeline of educational administration. These institutional and professional worklife experiences and personal issues will be further examined to address the role they may play in the experience of women and ethnic minority administrators. Examining the experiences of administrators currently in the pipeline and their intent to pursue advancement in school administration may lend insight into the severity of the predicted shortage, as well as provide possible solutions before this shortage comes to fruition. Using a research-designed survey instrument, this research examined the relationship among school administrators' institutional and professional worklife experiences, personal issues, satisfaction, and the intent to pursue advancement toward the superintendency. Surveys were collected from 652 administrators within a Midwestern state who are considered in the pipeline or career path(s) to the superintendency, including secondary assistant principals, elementary and secondary principals, and assistant superintendents. The findings in this study revealed that there are a number of institutional and professional worklife experiences and personal issues that are considered important and significantly related to satisfaction. These worklife experiences varied in degree of importance and significance by gender, race/ethnicity, and administrative position. The relationship between intent to pursue advancement, satisfaction, institutional and professional worklife experiences, and personal issues was not statistically significant; however, there was a relationship between these variables and administrators' intent to leave.

It's a path not recommended for the faint of heart, as anyone who has held such a position will attest. Administrative leadership requires a high level of managerial skill, experience, commitment, and preparedness. The Administrative Career provides an in-depth look, from entry level to retirement, at all aspects of this rewarding career. Authors Marshall and Kasten have 24 years of combined experience teaching master's and doctoral students and doing research in educational administration. Through case studies derived from interviews and discussions with their students, they've created a guide that reflects the everyday world and dilemmas encountered in school. Particular attention is focused on the strengths of administrators willing to take risks, on women and minorities in administration, and on the assistant principalship. The Administrative Career is a complete, practical guide - an excellent resource for educators at all levels of administration. This is a book equally at home in the hands of practicing administrators and those who aspire to join their ranks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the National Cooperative Educational Statistics System in 1988, states have joined with the National Center for Education Statistics to produce and maintain comparable and uniform education statistics. Through the National Forum on Education Statistics, states have met to develop and propose a set of basic data elements for voluntary use. Using these data elements will provide more comparable and reliable education information for any educational system adopting the common terminology. The basic data elements will not meet every education information purpose, but a set of basic data elements should help answer the most frequently asked questions about the administration, status, quality, operation, and performance of schools and school systems. This report presents a process for selecting and including new data elements in an information system and the student and staff elements that can be used to create information for conducting the day-to-day administration of schools and school districts; completing federal and state reports, and creating indicators that address questions about the success and functioning of education systems. The basic data elements selected for student information systems are grouped into categories of: (1) personal information; (2) enrollment; (3) school participation and activities; (4) assessment; (5) transportation; (6) health conditions, special program participation, and student support services; and (7) discipline. Similar elements defined for staff information systems include personal information, educational background, qualification information, current employment, assignments, and information on career development and separation from employment. An appendix contains discussions of policy questions, indicators, and basic data elements. (SLD)

This book was released on 2002 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Qualified school administrators, particularly district superintendents, are among the most sought after professionals of the new century. Due to a perceived national shortage, consultants, search firms, and state school board associations are courting these highly trained women and men with attractive salaries, lucrative benefits packages, and other perks usually reserved for chief executive officers in the corporate world. As a result, the long-held tradition by school administrators of practicing within a particular state for the duration of their career is no longer necessary. Historically, these educators were forced to accumulate total years of service in a particular state in order to maximize their retirement benefits. These benefits are most often based upon years of service within a system or state, and an average of the four or five highest years of salary. Because there are no nationally accepted certification requirements for either principals or superintendents, qualifications vary dramatically from state to state. Sherri Zimmerman has designed this handbook to provide school administrators with the information they need when considering positions in other states. Certification requirements for both the positions of principal and superintendent in all 50 states are included in this easy to use reference.
