Book Synopsis Reform in School Mathematics and Authentic Assessment by : Thomas A. Romberg
Download or read book Reform in School Mathematics and Authentic Assessment written by Thomas A. Romberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today new ways of thinking about learning call for new ways for monitoring learning. Reform in School Mathematics builds from the vision that assessment can become the bridge for instructional activity, accountability, and teacher development. It places teachers in key roles while developing the theme that we cannot reform the way in which school mathematics is taught without radically reforming the ways the effects of that teaching are monitored. Among others, this volume addresses the issues of the specification of performance standards, the development of authentic tasks, the measure of status and growth or a combination, the development of psychometric models, and the development of scoring rubrics. The new models proposed in this book give teachers a wealth of nontraditional assessment strategies and concrete ways to obtain measures of both group and individual differences in growth.
Book Synopsis Knowing What Students Know by : National Research Council
Download or read book Knowing What Students Know written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-10-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a hot topic. From the stage of presidential debates to tonight's dinner table, it is an issue that most Americans are deeply concerned about. While there are many strategies for improving the educational process, we need a way to find out what works and what doesn't work as well. Educational assessment seeks to determine just how well students are learning and is an integral part of our quest for improved education. The nation is pinning greater expectations on educational assessment than ever before. We look to these assessment tools when documenting whether students and institutions are truly meeting education goals. But we must stop and ask a crucial question: What kind of assessment is most effective? At a time when traditional testing is subject to increasing criticism, research suggests that new, exciting approaches to assessment may be on the horizon. Advances in the sciences of how people learn and how to measure such learning offer the hope of developing new kinds of assessments-assessments that help students succeed in school by making as clear as possible the nature of their accomplishments and the progress of their learning. Knowing What Students Know essentially explains how expanding knowledge in the scientific fields of human learning and educational measurement can form the foundations of an improved approach to assessment. These advances suggest ways that the targets of assessment-what students know and how well they know it-as well as the methods used to make inferences about student learning can be made more valid and instructionally useful. Principles for designing and using these new kinds of assessments are presented, and examples are used to illustrate the principles. Implications for policy, practice, and research are also explored. With the promise of a productive research-based approach to assessment of student learning, Knowing What Students Know will be important to education administrators, assessment designers, teachers and teacher educators, and education advocates.
Book Synopsis Northern Lights on PISA and TALIS by : Ludvigsen, Sten
Download or read book Northern Lights on PISA and TALIS written by Ludvigsen, Sten and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Is PISA 2012 relevant to mathematics education in Norway and Sweden? • In what ways are the different leadership styles among principals in the Nordic countries related to teachers’ attitudes and behaviours and students achievements? • What are the associations between professional development, job satisfaction and self-efficacy? • Can collegial work and school leader feedback improve teachers’ self-efficacy in Nordic classrooms? • What characterizes high-performing students in mathematics within the Nordic countries? • Are international large-scale educational assessments elephants arriving at the gates of our national educational system? These are some of the questions that are discussed in this collection of articles. The issues are based on the results of the OECD studies PISA and TALIS. The articles aim to provide input for policy discussions and to further policy development within the Nordic countries. Therefore, the main target groups are educational ministers and policymakers at all levels. These analyses will also provide input to the joint Nordic initiatives on educational development.

Download or read book Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge written by James Hiebert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1986. This book is intended for those people who are interested in how mathematics is learned. It is intended especially for those who are interested in the mental processes involved in becoming mathematically competent and the mental processes that inhibit such competency from developing. The volume opens with an overview of the issue and then traces the relationships between conceptual and procedural knowledge in mathematics from preschool days through the years of formal schooling. Mathematics educators and cognitive psychologists from a variety of perspectives contribute theoretical arguments and empirical data to illuminate the nature of the relationships and, in tum, the nature of mathematics learning.
Book Synopsis 50th IMO - 50 Years of International Mathematical Olympiads by : Hans-Dietrich Gronau
Download or read book 50th IMO - 50 Years of International Mathematical Olympiads written by Hans-Dietrich Gronau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2009 Germany hosted the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). For the very first time the number of participating countries exceeded 100, with 104 countries from all continents. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the IMO provides an ideal opportunity to look back over the past five decades and to review its development to become a worldwide event. This book is a report about the 50th IMO as well as the IMO history. A lot of data about all the 50 IMOs are included. We list the most successful contestants, the results of the 50 Olympiads and the 112 countries that have ever taken part. It is impressive to see that many of the world’s leading research mathematicians were among the most successful IMO participants in their youth. Six of them gave presentations at a special celebration: Bollobás, Gowers, Lovász, Smirnov, Tao and Yoccoz. This book is aimed at students in the IMO age group and all those who have interest in this worldwide leading competition for highschool students.
