Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth Taniguchi International Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which was held at Senkari Semi nar House of Kwansei Gakuin Universi~y in Sanda-shi, Japan, during the period of 3-8 November 1981. The topic of the symposium was "Anderson rocalization," one of the most fundamental problems in condensed-matter physics. Since Anderson's classic paper was published in 1958, much theoretical and experimental effort has been performed to study the problem of electron localization in a random potential. Quite recently, Abrahams, Anderson, Licciardello, and Ramakrishnan proposed a scaling theory of the Anderson lo calization which made it possible to perform microscopic investigations. Rapid progress has followed and we are now getting a coherent picture of the behavior of electrons in disordered systems. When we organized the symposium, we asked Dr. Anderson to participate in it and to give a review talk on theoretical aspects of the problem. Though he kindly accepted our invitation, he could not come due to a sudden illness. A review talk was given by Professor Thouless who kindly accepted our request to take the place of Dr. Anderson. Fortunately, Dr. Anderson has since re covered from his illness.

Book excerpt: When we first had the idea of organizing the International Conference on Localization, Interaction, and Transport Phenomena in Impure Metals we expected to bring together at most a hundred physicists. The fact that more than a hundred and fifty participated clearly shows that the topic of the meeting was of great interest to an important fraction of the solid state physics community. In fact, remembering that the localization problem is already a quarter of a century old, it is quite amazing to see how, during the last five years, new and very successful theoretical models emerged which were confirmed by sometimes ingenious experiments. The number of groups involved in the study of localization or related problems in the transport properties of matter even seems to be increasing. The main purpose of this conference was to review the present status of activities in the localization field and hopefully to stimulate new ideas. A study of the Conference Proceedings ascertains that we were successful in reaching these two goals. Moreover, the presence of the authors of the about ninety contributed papers published in the supplement volume assured the very lively atmosphere which characterizes successful conferences. These included resonant tunnelling and superlattice phenomena and the topics of ballistic transport, quantised conductance and anomalous magnetoresistance effects in laterally gated two-dimensional electron systems. Although the main emphasis was on fundamental physics, a series of supporting lectures described the underlying technology (Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Metallo-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition, Electron Beam Lithography and other advanced processing technologies). Actual and potential applications of low dimensional structures in optoelectronic and high frequency devices were also discussed. The ASI took the form of a series of lectures of about fifty minutes' duration which were given by senior researchers from a wide range of countries. Most of the lectures are recorded in these Proceedings. The younger members of the Institute made the predominant contribution to the discussion sessions following each lecture and, in addition, provided most of the fifty-five papers that were presented in two lively poster sessions. The ASl emphasised the impressive way in which this research field has developed through the fruitful interaction of theory, experiment and semiconductor device technology. Many of the talks demonstrated both the effectiveness and limitations of semiclassical concepts in describing the quantum phenomena exhibited by electrons in low dimensional structures.

A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE During the last few years the numerical techniques for the solution of elliptic problems, in potential theory for example, have been drastically improved. Several so-called fast methods have been developed which re duce the required computing time many orders of magnitude over that of classical algorithms. The new methods include multigrid, fast Fourier transforms, multi pole methods and wavelet techniques. Wavelets have re cently been developed into a very useful tool in signal processing, the solu tion of integral equation, etc. Wavelet techniques should be quite useful in many wave propagation problems, especially in inhomogeneous and nonlin ear media where special features of the solution such as singularities might be tracked efficiently.
