Book excerpt: X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) like the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) have now operated for a decade, delivering linearly polarized pulses as short as a few femtoseconds to users. I will discuss two experiments and associated theoretical developments on manipulating the FEL gain medium -- a relativistic electron beam -- in order to extend the capabilities of LCLS. The first is the production of isolated, circularly polarized x-ray pulses with a helical undulator and non-intuitive electron microbunch rotation. The microbunch rotation required for isolating circular pulses is also useful to multiplex LCLS and for outcoupling radiation from cavity-based FELs. The second project is on the production of sub-femtosecond x-ray pulses with a tailored electron beam phase space. We tailor the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam core with coherent radiation from the electron beam tail produced in a magnetic undulator. The resultant x-ray pulses contain six orders of magnitude more energy than otherwise comparable sub-femtosecond x-ray sources. These two projects involved relativistic electron beams interacting with radiation in previously unexplored parameter regimes. We therefore also discuss several theoretical contributions and associated simulation work. In particular, we present an improved understanding of coherent radiation from a kicked electron beam, undulator impedance, reverse tapered undulators, and rest-frame simulation of FELs.

Book excerpt: X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFELs) are the brightest source of X-ray radiation with sufficient intensity to perform nonlinear X-ray spectroscopy, such as pump-probe experiments. By extending the nonlinear soft X-ray pump-probe techniques to few-femtosecond and attosecond timescales, we can probe the motion of valence electrons in molecular systems on their natural time scale. In this thesis, I will discuss two projects that use advanced electron beam shaping techniques to generate attosecond soft X-ray FEL pulse pairs and high-intensity few-femtosecond pulses at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). In the first project, we demonstrated the generation and control of two-color soft X-ray FEL pulse pairs with attosecond-scale durations and timing stability. We employed angular streaking to measure the time delay between pump/probe pulses. These gigawatt-level attosecond soft X-ray FEL pump/probe pulse pairs have been applied to directly time-resolve the charge migration in molecules. In the second project, we used the wakefield of a corrugated structure called a dechirper to produce a nondestructive transverse kick in the electron beam and selectively radiated different slices of the electron beam in multiple stages, enabling the generation of few-femtosecond soft X-ray FEL pulses with peak power of hundreds of gigawatts.

Book excerpt: Chemical bonds form, change, or break on a femtosecond timescale. Recording a 'molecular movie' with an atomic-scale spatial resolution at the timescale set by atomic motion is a critical step in understanding these processes that can be accomplished by using ultra-short x-ray pulses. In the first part of this talk I will discuss several ideas for a generation of femtosecond x-ray pulses using spontaneous emission of electrons. Some of them, like the laser 'slicing' technique, are now routinely used at several storage-ring-based synchrotron light sources; others, like an rf orbit deflection technique, is under construction at the Advanced Photon Source. Nowadays, the femtosecond x-ray pulses are also routinely produced by x-ray free electron lasers (FELs). In the second part of this talk I will discuss how one can use FELs to obtain even shorter x-ray pulses down to attosecond timescale.

Book excerpt: Ever since the discovery of mode-locking, efforts have been devoted to reducing the duration of laser pulses since the ultrashort pulses are critical to explore the dynamics occurred on a ever-shorter timescale. In this paper we describe a scheme that's capable of generating intense attosecond x-ray pulses with duration beyond the atomic unit of time ((almost equal to)24 attoseconds). The scheme combines the echo-enabled harmonic generation technique with the bunch compression which allows one to generate harmonic numbers of a few hundred in a microbunched beam through up-conversion of the frequency of a UV seed laser. A few-cycle intense IR laser is used to generate the required energy chirp in the beam for bunch compression and for selection of an attosecond x-ray pulse. Using a representative realistic set of parameters, we show that 1 nm x-ray pulse with peak power of a few hundred MW and duration as short as 20 attoseconds (FWHM) can be generated from a 200 nm UV seed laser. The proposed scheme may enable the study of electronic dynamics with a resolution beyond the atomic unit of time and may open a new regime of ultrafast sciences.

Book excerpt: Recent initiatives at UCLA concerning ultra-short, GeV electron beam generation have been aimed at achieving sub-fs pulses capable of driving X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in single-spike mode. This use of very low Q beams may allow existing FEL injectors to produce few-100 attosecond pulses, with very high brightness. Towards this end, recent experiments at the LCLS have produced ≈2 fs, 20 pC electron pulses. We discuss here extensions of this work, in which we seek to exploit the beam brightness in FELs, in tandem with new developments in cryogenic undulator technology, to create compact accelerator-undulator systems that can lase below 0.15 Å, or be used to permit 1.5 Å operation at 4.5 GeV. In addition, we are now developing experiments which use the present LCLS fs pulses to excite plasma wakefields exceeding 1 TV/m, permitting a table-top TeV accelerator for frontier high energy physics applications.

Book excerpt: A review of various methods for generation of ultrashort x-ray pulses using relativistic electron beam from conventional accelerators is presented. Both spontaneous and coherent emission of electrons is considered. The importance of the time-resolved studies of matter at picosecond (ps), femtosecond (fs), and atttosecond (as) time scales using x-rays has been widely recognized including by award of a Nobel Prize in 1999 [Zewa]. Extensive reviews of scientific drivers can be found in [BES1, BES2, BES3, Lawr, Whit]. Several laser-based techniques have been used to generate ultrashort x-ray pulses including laser-driven plasmas [Murn, Alte, Risc, Rose, Zamp], high-order harmonic generation [Schn, Rund, Wang, Arpi], and laser-driven anode sources [Ande]. In addition, ultrafast streak-camera detectors have been applied at synchrotron sources to achieve temporal resolution on the picosecond time scale [Wulf, Lind1]. In this paper, we focus on a different group of techniques that are based on the use of the relativistic electron beam produced in conventional accelerators. In the first part we review several techniques that utilize spontaneous emission of electrons and show how solitary sub-ps x-ray pulses can be obtained at existing storage ring based synchrotron light sources and linacs. In the second part we consider coherent emission of electrons in the free-electron lasers (FELs) and review several techniques for a generation of solitary sub-fs x-ray pulses. Remarkably, the x-ray pulses that can be obtained with the FELs are not only significantly shorter than the ones considered in Part 1, but also carry more photons per pulse by many orders of magnitude.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers (X-FELs) have been designed, built and commissioned since the first lasing of the Linac Coherent Light Source in the hard and soft X-ray regions, and great progress has been made in improving their performance and extending their capabilities. Meanwhile, experimental techniques to exploit the unique properties of X-FELs to explore atomic and molecular systems of interest to physics, chemistry, biology and the material sciences have also been developed. As a result, our knowledge of atomic and molecular science has been greatly extended. Nevertheless, there is still much to be accomplished, and the potential for discovery with X-FELs is still largely unexplored. The next generation of scientists will need to be well versed in both particle beams/FEL physics and X-ray photon science. This book presents material from the Enrico Fermi summer school: Physics of and Science with X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers, held at the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics in Varenna, Italy, from 26 June - 1 July 2017. The lectures presented at the school were aimed at introducing graduate students and young scientists to this fast growing and exciting scientific area, and subjects covered include basic accelerator and FEL physics, as well as an introduction to the main research topics in X-FEL-based biology, atomic molecular optical science, material sciences, high-energy density physics and chemistry. Bridging the gap between accelerator/FEL physicists and scientists from other disciplines, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.
