Book Synopsis Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles by : D. B. Lichtenberg
Download or read book Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles written by D. B. Lichtenberg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unitary Symmetry and Elementary Particles discusses the role of symmetry in elementary particle physics. The book reviews the theory of abstract groups and group representations including Eigenstates, cosets, conjugate classes, unitary vector spaces, unitary representations, multiplets, and conservation laws. The text also explains the concept of Young Diagrams or Young Tableaux to prove the basis functions of the unitary irreducible representations of the unitary group SU(n). The book defines Lie groups, Lie algebras, and gives some examples of these groups. The basis vectors of irreducible unitary representations of Lie groups constitute a multiplet, which according to Racah (1965) and Behrends et al. (1962) can have properties of weights. The text also explains the properties of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Wigner-Eckart theorem. SU(3) multiplets have members classified as hadrons (strongly interacting particles), of which one characteristic show that the mass differences of these members have some regular properties. The Gell-Mann and Ne-eman postulate also explains another characteristic peculiar to known multiplets. The book describes the quark model, as well as, the uses of the variants of the quark model. This collection is suitable for researchers and scientists in the field of applied mathematics, nuclear physics, and quantum mechanics.

Book Synopsis Recent Developments in Particle Symmetries by : A Zichichi
Download or read book Recent Developments in Particle Symmetries written by A Zichichi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Developments in Particle Symmetries focuses on the advancements of processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches in particle symmetries. The selection first offers information on higher symmetries and deviations from unitary symmetry, including S matrix and perturbation theory and bootstrap theory of octet enhancement. The text then ponders on broken symmetries and sum rules and difficulties of relativistic U(6). Discussions focus on covariant models, unitary, Coleman's theorems, saturation of commutation relations and particle multiplets, and exact internal symmetry. The manuscript elaborates on CP violation, K decay and CP violation, and proton-antiproton annihilations at rest. The text then takes a look at the value of internal symmetries, low-energy hyperon-proton interactions, and strange resonances. Discussions focus on mesonic and baryonic resonances, hierarchy of internal symmetries, well-ordered violation of internal symmetries, and the combination of internal and geometrical symmetries in the physics of elementary particles. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers wanting to study particle symmetries.
Book Synopsis Extended Electromagnetic Theory by : Bo Lehnert
Download or read book Extended Electromagnetic Theory written by Bo Lehnert and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents extended forms of the Maxwell equations as well as electromagnetic fields, based on a non-zero divergence of the electric field and a non-zero electric conductivity in vacuo. These approaches, which predict new features of the electromagnetic field, such as the existence of both longitudinal and transverse solutions, the existence of space-charge current in vacuo, and steady electromagnetic equilibria, have possible applications to charge and neutral leptons and new photon physics. The present theory can also clear up some unsolved problems, such as the total reflection of light at the interface between a vacuum and a dissipative medium, and the appearance of an angular momentum of the photon, thereby leading to a rest mass and an axial magnetic field component of the photon. This axial magnetic field component may be related to the B(3) field proposed by Evans and Vigier. A new gauge condition has been proposed to maintain consistency of the theory with the non-zero photon mass. Several consequences of the non-zero mass of the photon are also discussed, especially in the astrophysical context.
Book Synopsis Neoclassical Theory of Electromagnetic Interactions by : Anatoli Babin
Download or read book Neoclassical Theory of Electromagnetic Interactions written by Anatoli Babin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the authors present their recently developed theory of electromagnetic interactions. This neoclassical approach extends the classical electromagnetic theory down to atomic scales and allows the explanation of various non-classical phenomena in the same framework. While the classical Maxwell–Lorentz electromagnetism theory succeeds in describing the physical reality at macroscopic scales, it struggles at atomic scales. Here, quantum mechanics traditionally takes over to describe non-classical phenomena such as the hydrogen spectrum and de Broglie waves. By means of modifying the classical theory, the approach presented here is able to consistently explain quantum-mechanical effects, and while similar to quantum mechanics in some respects, this neoclassical theory also differs markedly from it. In particular, the newly developed framework omits probabilistic interpretations of the wave function and features a new fundamental spatial scale which, at the size of the free electron, is much larger than the classical electron radius and is relevant to plasmonics and emission physics. This book will appeal to researchers interested in advanced aspects of electromagnetic theory. Treating the classical approach in detail, including non-relativistic aspects and the Lagrangian framework, and comparing the neoclassical theory with quantum mechanics and the de Broglie–Bohm theory, this work is completely self-contained.

Book Synopsis Symmetry in Electromagnetism by : Albert Ferrando
Download or read book Symmetry in Electromagnetism written by Albert Ferrando and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetism plays a crucial role in basic and applied physics research. The discovery of electromagnetism as the unifying theory for electricity and magnetism represents a cornerstone in modern physics. Symmetry was crucial to the concept of unification: electromagnetism was soon formulated as a gauge theory in which local phase symmetry explained its mathematical formulation. This early connection between symmetry and electromagnetism shows that a symmetry-based approach to many electromagnetic phenomena is recurrent, even today. Moreover, many recent technological advances are based on the control of electromagnetic radiation in nearly all its spectra and scales, the manipulation of matter-radiation interactions with unprecedented levels of sophistication, or new generations of electromagnetic materials. This is a fertile field for applications and for basic understanding in which symmetry, as in the past, bridges apparently unrelated phenomena―from condensed matter to high-energy physics. In this book, we present modern contributions in which symmetry proves its value as a key tool. From dual-symmetry electrodynamics to applications to sustainable smart buildings, or magnetocardiography, we can find a plentiful crop, full of exciting examples of modern approaches to electromagnetism. In all cases, symmetry sheds light on the theoretical and applied works presented in this book.

Book Synopsis Self-Force and Inertia by : Stephen N. Lyle
Download or read book Self-Force and Inertia written by Stephen N. Lyle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-05-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any student working with the celebrated Feynman Lectures will ?nd a chapter in it with the intriguing title Electromagnetic Mass [2, Chap. 28]. In a way, it looks rather out of date, and it would be easy to skate over it, or even just skip it. And yet all bound state particles we know of today have electromagnetic mass. It is just that we approach the question differently. Today we have multiplets of mesons or baryons, and we have colour symmetry, and broken ?avour symmetry, and we think about mass and energy through Hamiltonians. This book is an invitation to look at all these modern ideas with the help of an old light. Everything here is quite standard theory, in fact, classical electromagnetism for the main part. The reader would be expected to have encountered the theory of elec tromagnetism before, but there is a review of all the necessary results, and nothing sophisticated about the calculations. The reader could be any student of physics, or any physicist, but someone who would like to know more about inertia, and the clas sical precursor of mass renormalisation in quantum ?eld theory. In short, someone who feels it worthwhile to ask why F= ma.
Book Synopsis Symmetry Principles Particle Physics by : W. M. Gibson
Download or read book Symmetry Principles Particle Physics written by W. M. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1976-03-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the properties and interactions of the elementary particles is an essential prerequisite of research work in high energy physics. Much progress in the subject has been achieved with the aid of symmetry principles. In this 1980 book the concept of symmetry or invariance is employed as a unifying theme. Using a careful explanation of the mathematical formalism and with many applications to particular cases, the authors introduce the reader to the symmetry schemes which dominate the world of the particle physicist. The presentation will also appeal to mathematicians and physicists in other fields who are interested in the applications of the general principles of symmetry. After a brief survey of the particles and a review of the relevant quantum mechanics, the principal symmetries are studied in turn. Some technical points are relegated to appendices and the book contains extensive references.
