Book excerpt: "The overall objective of this study was the description of the behavior of mesogen substituted acetylene monomers and polymers in monolayer films at the air/water interface and as multilayer films including the formation of such films. Fundamental knowledge to be gained would include the effect of balancing hydrophilic and hydrophobic tendencies in a molecule more complex than the classical fatty acids or lipids. The effect of molecular shape on the packing and thus the ultimate stability of monolayers formed from these new molecules was explored. The work takes on the challenge of preorienting monomers in well-ordered arrays prior to attempting polymerization with the hope that order would be preserved in any resulting polymer. New knowledge gained with regard to the acetylenic monomers includes processing of the acetylene monomer into multilayer films, followed by the design and synthesis of a second generation of improved monomer structure for superior LBK film transfer properties. A third generation of acetylenic monomer was synthesized which approaches more closely the goal of solid state polymerization of these materials. A parallel study took a different approach. The materials are pre-formed poly(phenylene-acetylene) polymers so questions about reactivity are mute. The materials are a variation on the well-known hairy-rod polymers with regard to their Langmuir film-forming properties. Overall, the goal was to demonstrate that these polymers could be processed into NLO materials with novel polar order."--Page [1].

I and II) or in gel and membrane forms (Vols. III and IV). In correlation with charges, other physical or chemical properties of macro molecules have been considered. Understanding of charge and hydrophobic effects is equally important for synthetic and biopolymers or their systems. Optically Active Polymers are related to problems of the same class, since optical activity is an inherent property of both natural macromolecules as well as a great variety of polymers synthesized in the Jast twenty years. Optical activity is a physical spectral property of chiral matter caused by asymmetrical configurations, conformations and structures which have no plane and no center of symmetry and consequently have two mirror image enantiomeric forms of inverse optical rotation. The racemic mixture of chiral enantiomers is optically inactive. The most common form of optical activity was first measured at a constant wavelength by the angle of rotation of linearly polarized light. More recently the measurements have been extended to the entire range of visible and attainable ultraviolet regions where electronic transitions are observed, giving rise to the ORD technique (Optical Rotatory Dispersion). The Cotton effects appear in the region of optically active absorption bands; outside of these bands the plain curve spectrum is also dependent on all the electronic transitions of the chromophores.

Book excerpt: In this grant period we have continued our studies of the synthesis, characterization and device fabrication of electro-optically active chromophoric macromolecules. The systems studied focused on novel conjugated main chain structures with high photoluminescent and electroluminescent quantum yields. The structures incorporated fluorene containing moieties, ethynylene bonds, terphenylene derivatives, meta and ortho variants of the paraphenylene unit, and a number of derivatized phenyl units either alone or in combination. In most cases the photophysical properties of the new materials were extensively studied. A new method to prepare efficient anode surfaces for devices using indium tin oxide nanopartides was developed. Over 25 publications dealing with electrooptical polymers were published in the grant period. We have also continued our study of the coilglobule transition in solvated polar macromolecules focusing on temperature regimes just below the e-point. Other studies completed in the grant period included those involving surface modifications of polymer films by ion implantation orientated towards enhanced permselectivity, and a continuation of research studying ternary polymer blends in which one or more constituents is a copolymer. Altogether, some 36 manuscripts were published in the grant period, with a further 4 in press.

The theory for this concept was formulated by Langevin. During the next half century, occasional measurements were made both to characterise the phenomenon and to evaluate the relevant physico-chemical parameters of pure liquids and molecular fluids. During the 1930-40 era, Staudinger and others demonstrated the existence in nature of giant molecules and colloidal particles. Since that time it has slowly but increasingly been realised that these big molecules or particles often have relatively large dipole moments, are generally anisotropic in structure and hence, in solution or suspension, give rise to significant electric birefringence signals. Furthermore, there have been three electronic innovations which have greatly eased the experimental measurement of the effect for such materials. These were the development of photomultiplier tubes for detection, of oscillo scope~ for display and of high voltage generators developing bursts or pulses of potential difference. The last mentioned enable the experi menter to study the Kerr effect not only for its amplitude but also in the time domain. The rates of molecular response to the switching of the electric field lead directly to information on the size and geo metry of the constituent molecules and particles in a dilute solution or suspension.
