Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical News, 1920, Vol. 29: Generation, Transmission and Application of Electricity The final solution of this traction-problem will not be found in any franchise granted by the city council, no mat ter what its terms may be. The experience of the majority of the other states of the Union clearly points to the one logical thing to do, and that is to place traction companies under the control Of a state public utilities commission. Minnesota already has a railway and warehouse commis sion that could be given enlarged powers to supervise the traction companies of the state. The records of our neigh bor state, Wisconsin, and many Others who have followed this plan, proves conclusively that this method of handling public utilities is far superior to that of municipal control. The situation in Minnesota, with Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth served by one traction corporation, makes it especially desirable to utilize this state commission plan. This will do away with all local franchise granted by city councils and will give the greatest assurance for adequate service. The city councils lay their demands before the state commissions and the tract-ion companies present their side of the case, and this judicial commission employs the services of the very best engineers and auditors, and their decisions are usually in the best interests Of the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical News, 1919, Vol. 28: Generation, Transmission and Application of Electricity The reason' for the smaller energy consumption with the higher rate of acceleration and braking is that the motor rnan operates for less time on the resistance points of the controller. There is also less energy dissipated in the brake shoes as well as in the resistors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book presents new and important research on electric power and its generation, transmission and efficiency. The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are witness to the emergence a new generation of power engineers, focused on providing electric energy in a deregulated environment. To educate this new breed, textbooks must take a comprehensive approach to electrical energy and encourage problem solving using modern tools. Updated to reflect recent trends and new areas of emphasis, Mohamed El-Hawary's Electrical Energy Systems, Second Edition shifts the teaching of electrical energy and electric power toward a sustainable and reliable paradigm. Discussions ranging from the technical aspects of generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization to power system components, theory, protection, and the energy control center culminate in the most modern and complete introduction to effects of deregulating electric power systems, blackouts and their causes, and minimizing their effects. The author prepares students for real-world challenges by including numerous examples, problems, and MATLAB scripts, teaching students to use industry-standard problem-solving tools. This edition also features an entirely new chapter on the present and future of electric energy systems, which highlights new challenges facing system designers and operators in light of modern events and transformations impacting the field. Providing convenience for instructors in addition to a thoroughly modern education for students, Electrical Energy Systems, Second Edition sets a new benchmark for the education of electric power engineering focused on sustainable development and operation of new power systems.

The focus of the textbook is on the two most important issues related to meeting of the growing needs of humanity in electricity: "Hunger for energy" and “Ecological infarct”. In the book are discussed the methods of their solution: optimization of energy balance, use of renewable energy resources, new methods of electricity production, increase of the efficiency of production, accumulation, transmission, distribution and consumption electricity. The third issue – social and geopolitical threats due to the increasing need for energy – in the textbook is not considered inasmuch it details in non-stop regime discussed in the mass media. Choosing the structure and content of the textbook is based on the ten years of the author experience of giving lectures to Tomsk Polytechnic University students who study according to the program Electric Power Engineering. This textbook is addresed to students, masters and post-graduates. It can be interesting for everyone who is thinking about the future of our civilization, in general, and meeting of human needs in electric power, in particular.
