Book excerpt: Carbon nanotube (CNT) is a hollow structure consisted by one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms, which can be considered as a rolled-up graphene sheet. The diameter and rolling angle (chirality) uniquely determines its electronic structure. Over two decades of study, due to the difficulty of synthesizing clean individual CNTs and the limitation of accurate chirality characterization, there are still unveiled questions towards the intrinsic properties of this 1-D material at single molecular level. In this thesis, I will discuss the approaches of fabricating chirality assigned CNT device and the experimental results of its optical and electrical properties. In the first part, I describe using 'fast heating' chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to achieve the high quality suspended CNT growth. Combining Rayleigh and Raman spectroscopy, I demonstrate the accurate assignment of chirality for each suspended individual CNT. With the ability of chirality identification, a series of optical and electrical experiments were conducted on the selected CNTs of interest.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are excellent optoelectronic materials and have been investigated for various electronic and optoelectronic device applications, such as light-emitting diodes, photodetectors and photovoltaic cells. This chapter begins with a general discussion on the various types of CNT diodes. It then focuses on a particular type of CNT diode fabricated by a doping-free process, and its application in photovoltaic cells and light-emitting diodes. The chapter ends with an outlook for the use of CNT in further integrated nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

Book excerpt: The fundamental electronic states and optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes are briefly explained in this chapter. Moreover, the novel optical properties of carbon nanotubes revealed by advanced laser spectroscopy (single-nanotube spectroscopy and time-resolved spectroscopy) are introduced. Due to the enhanced Coulomb interaction, the optically generated electron-hole pair forms a strongly bound ‘exciton’ state, analogous to the hydrogen-like state in the carbon nanotubes. The striking features of excitons in the carbon nanotube, such as singlet-dark states and triplet states, which dominate the optical properties, are described in this chapter.

Book excerpt: This book describes the use of carbon nanotubes in form of randomly oriented networks in display technology. Carbon nanotubes can behave either like a metal or like a semiconductor and are used in this work as transparent conductive pixel electrodes as well as semiconducting channel in thin-film transistors. Monte-Carlo simulations examine more closely the percolation probabilities of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. The experimental part covers methods to create stable surfactant suspensions from nanotube powders, simple and cost-effective low temperature deposition processes from liquid phase on glass and flexible plastic substrates and patterning procedures of the created films. Electrical and optical characterization gives insight on their performance. The realization of liquid crystal and OLED displays shows the compatibility of transparent carbon nanotube electrodes with production processes. Results of the semiconductor application are presented on a transistor level. The dependence of the transistor performance on the network density for both, mixed and highly semiconducting nanotubes is discussed.

Book excerpt: Transparent electrodes (TEs) are a class of materials that make it possible to bring electrical current or potentials in close proximity to optically active regions without significant loss of optical energy. However, it is a challenge to decouple the electrical and optical properties of a material, as the property of conductivity is strongly coupled to the imaginary part of the refractive index. An ideal TE has high transparency in combination with very low electrical resistivity. The main objective of the thesis was to develop TEs which can replace expensive, scarce and fragile Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), the most widely used TE material in the industry today. The thesis contains original work on ultrathin metal film (UTMF)-based TEs, which are essential elements in a wide range of optoelectronics, consumer electronics and energy devices. It presents new designs and fabrication methods and demonstrates the efficient use of UTMF-TEs in organic light emitting diodes and solar cells, achieving similar levels of efficiency to that of state-of-the-art ITO.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the characterization methods involved with carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based composites, with a more detailed look at computational mechanics approaches, namely the finite element method. Special emphasis is placed on studies that consider the extent to which imperfections in the structure of the nanomaterials affect their mechanical properties. These defects may include random distribution of fibers in the composite structure, as well as atom vacancies, perturbation and doping in the structure of individual carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: This chapter describes how the semiconducting-single-wall nanotube (SWNT) extraction affects their luminescence properties and how such properties can be exploited to fabricate optical sources emitting in near-infrared wavelengths ranging from 1 to 2μm. The main applications of carbon nanotube (CNT) lasers are aimed at optical interconnects and biophotonics. We review recent achievements in obtaining optical gain in thin films doped with CNTs. Techniques for determining optical gain in CNTs are considered with particular focus on the variable strip length (VSL) method and choices to integrate nanotubes in the optical waveguide are discussed.
