Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inelastic scattering experiment was done in which 17-MeV protons from the Oregon State University cyclotron were scattered from 14N and 15N gas targets. Angular distributions are shown for the ground, 6.32-, 7.56-, 8.31-, and 8.57 -MeV states and the 5.3- and 7.2-MeV unresolved doublets of 15N, and for the ground, 2.3-, 3.9-, 6.2-, 6.4-, and 7.0-MeV states and the 5-, 5.7-, 8-, and 8.5-MeV unresolved doublets of 14N. Reasonable fits to the data were obtained for the 6.32 -MeV 15N state and the 2.3- and 3.9-MeV 14N states using a microscopic potential in a coupled-channel calculation. The use of a tensor force improved the fits to both the 6.32-MeV 15N state and the 2.3-MeV 14N state. A weak-coupling model was considered in which excited 15N states are formed by coupling a p1/2 proton hole to excited states of 16O. The model adequately represents the 5.27- and 7.56-MeV 15N states as being formed from the 6.13-MeV 16O state, and the 5.30- and 7. 30 -MeV 15N states as being formed from the 7.12 -MeV 16O state. The 6.32-MeV 15N state does not seem to be related to the 6.92-MeV 16O state, but evidence was presented that the 9.16 -MeV 15N state is related by the weak-coupling model to the 6.92-MeV 16O state.

Book excerpt: Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of protons by oxygen were measured at incident proton energies of 23.4, 24.5, 27.3, 30.1, 34.1, 36.8, 39.7, 43.1 and 46.1 MeV. The data cover the center of mass scattering angles from 10 to 160 degrees and have a relative uncertainty smaller than 2%. The results show strong resonances to exist below 30 MeV which appreciably distort the monotonic energy variation found at the higher energies. The results were compared with those obtained by other investigators in this energy region. Total reaction cross sections for proton incident on oxygen were measured at energies of 27.2, 34.2, 40.6 and 45.2 MeV using a beam attenuation technique. The results show a slow decrease with increasing energy. A preliminary optical model analysis of the differential cross section data, together with polarization data at the same energies, was made in the energy range 30 - 40 MeV using an eleven parameter optical model search code. This analysis demonstrated that the model is able to fit the data to large scattering angles with its parameters still retaining a smooth energy dependence. The predictions for the total cross sections were in good agreement with the measurements. (Author).
