Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. I. Book excerpt: This book will deal with arguments that analyze the Vatican policies of Francis, during the first seven years of his pontificate, in relation to some of the most urgent questions concerning humanity: migrants and refugees, the economy, and ecology. The logical choice of the time period for this work is given by Jorge Bergoglio's ascent to the "chair of St. Peter" until the end of 2019. That is why there is an interrelationship between history and the present, since it is written—in part—as his apostolic journeys, interventions, diplomatic actions, and discourses are carried out. To this is added an important quantity of writings of his authorship, as well as of some of his predecessors, in order to frame the question in a historically correct way and to understand his approach to issues of politics and international diplomacy, given his investiture as a religious and—at the same time—political leader

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive study of Spanish foreign policy since 2000. Based on privileged access to some of Spain’s most important foreign policy actors – including Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos – the book offers an insider account of how Spanish foreign policy was shaped within the context of international diplomacy. It offers crucial new insights into the foreign policy of the PSOE governments (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, 2004 to 2011). The volume considers the changes on the international stage since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, showing how regional conflicts and tensions affected the policy agendas of the West. To increase security and prosperity at home, the 2004 Spanish socialist government reasoned that they could no longer rely exclusively on unilateral measures, old Cold War alliances or a ‘Spain-first’ approach. Against the backdrop of this changing world, the book explores the concept of ‘effective multilateralism’ put forward by the PSOE, in which Spain abandoned its hitherto unconditional support for the US and instead engaged in a series of multilateral collaborations with regions around the world. Above all, this study seeks to provide a new international history of contemporary Spain, demonstrating how domestic changes intersected with global transformations, and put forward the argument that diplomacy works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Cuba threw off the yoke of Spanish rule at the end of the nineteenth century, it did so with the help of another foreign power, the United States. Thereafter, the United States became involved in Cuban affairs, intervening twice militarily (1898-1902 and 1906-1909). What was the effect of U.S. intervention? Conventional wisdom indicates that U.S. intervention hindered the rise of militarism in Cuba in the early years of statehood. This pathfinding study, however, takes just the opposite view. Jose M. Hernández argues that while U.S. influence may have checked the worst excesses of the Independence-war veterans who assumed control of Cuba's government, it did not completely deter them from resorting to violence. Thus, a tradition of using violence as a method for transferring power developed in Cuba that often made a mockery of democratic processes. In substantiating this innovative interpretation, Hernández covers a crucial phase in Cuban history that has been neglected by most recent U.S. historians. Correcting stereotypes and myths, he takes a fresh and dispassionate look at Cuba's often romanticized struggle for political emancipation, describing and analyzing in persuasive detail civilmilitary relations throughout the period. This puts national hero Jose Martí's role in the 1895-1898 war of independence in an unusual perspective and sets in bold relief the historical forces that went underground in 1898-1902, only to resurface a few years later. This study will be of interest to all students of hemispheric relations. It presents not only a more accurate picture of the Cuba spawned by American intervention, but also the Cuban side of a story that too frequently has been told solely from the U.S. point of view.

Book excerpt: Are you a leader, clergy or lay, in a Catholic parish wrestling with how to bridge the multiple ethnic, linguistic, and racial communities that increasingly comprise your parish? With these cultural backgrounds frequently come diverse perspectives on everything from how to communicate with each other to how to understand God. In addition, such cultural divisions all too often manifest differences in the access these communities have to parish decision-making structures. In Building Bridges, Not Walls - Construyamos puentes, no muros, John Francis Burke highlights the dramatic impact the growing Latino presence is having in parishes across the country, considers the theology of inculturation and intercultural ministry, and provides practical pastoral ministry suggestions on doing intercultural ministry. Includes full text in both English and Spanish.

Traducción, competencia plurilingüe y español como lengua de herencia (ELH) explores the connections between Spanish heritage language (SHL) education and translation competence. The volume identifies strategies to represent the linguistic experiences and practices of SHL students in the context of professional translation and interpreting training. Based on an empirical study with undergraduate students, this monograph provides insight on how to develop translation skills in three ways: as a plurilingual strategy, a pedagogical activity, and a professional skill. Because of its introductory nature, this book is of particular interest to SHL teachers and researchers seeking to systematically integrate translation practice into their teaching. Likewise, teachers of translation and interpreting who wish to learn how to enhance mediation as a learning component in translation and interpreting skills will find numerous suggestions on how to do so in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News, Neoliberalism, and Miami’s Fragmented Urban Space examines cultural and social forces responsible for inequalities that have emerged in the rampant development of Miami as a “world city.” This book argues that neoliberal movements rely on the power of journalistic discourses to authorize and legitimize harmful social acts such as gentrification. Moses Shumow and Robert E. Gutsche Jr. provide original analyses of intersections among memory, race, capitalism, and journalistic power, particularly at a time of immense political and environmental change. The authors examine changes in neighborhoods and in public-private developments that are bound to widen an already-great divide between classes and races in South Florida.
