Book Synopsis The New Dramatists of Mexico 1967–1985 by : Ronald D. Burgess
Download or read book The New Dramatists of Mexico 1967–1985 written by Ronald D. Burgess and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1976 a dozen hopeful young Mexican dramatists – most of them studying with Emilio Carballido – began staging plays, primarily in small, out-of-the-way theater, and publishing them, mostly in university magazines with limited distribution. Until now, more than twenty years later, there has been no comprehensive study devoted either to this original group of writers or to those who followed in the same generation, and no central source of information about them or their production. Although they continue to produce more plays every year, they represent a lost generation. Ronald Burgess now offers the first extensive study of this group of playwrights and their work. Included is discussion of over 200 plays by more than 40 writers, but the work of nine key playwrights is examined in depth. Most of these dramatists concern themselves with the state of Mexico today, reacting to current social conditions with depictions ranging from violence to guarded hope to anguished hopelessness. Many look to their nation's history and culture for explanations. In his illuminating study, Burgess places this theatrical generation in the context of contemporary Mexican society and literature, employing a wide variety of analytic approaches to highlight essential characteristics of these representative authors.

Book Synopsis El teatro en América Latina by : Adam Versenyi
Download or read book El teatro en América Latina written by Adam Versenyi and published by Ediciones AKAL. This book was released on 1996-04-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Latina Performance by : Alicia Arrizón
Download or read book Latina Performance written by Alicia Arrizón and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study exploring the role of Latina women in theater performance, literature, and criticism. Arrizón’s examination of Latina performance spans the twentieth century, beginning with oral traditions of corrido and revistas. She examines the soldadera and later theatrical personalities such as La Chata Noloesca and contemporary performance artist Carmelita Tropicana. Latina Performance considers the emergence of Latina aesthetics developed in the United States, but simultaneously linked with Latin America. As dramatists, performance artists, protagonists, and/or cultural critics, the women Arrizón examines in this book draw attention to their own divided position. They are neither Latin American nor Anglo, neither third- or first-world; they are feminists, but not quite “American style.” This in-between-ness is precisely what has created Latina performance and performance studies, and has made “Latina” an allegory for dual national and artistic identities. “Alicia Arrizón’s Latina Performance is a truly innovative and important contribution to Latino Studies as well as to theater and performance studies.” —Diana Taylor, New York University “Arrizón’s . . . important book revolves around the complex issues of identity formation and power relations for US women performers of Latin American descent. . . . Valuable for anyone interested in theater history and criticism, cultural studies, gender studies, and ethnic studies with attention to Mexican American, Chicana/o, and Latina/o studies. Upper—division undergraduates through professionals.” —E. C. Ramirez, Choice
