This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diachronic linguistics has been experiencing a strong revival during the last few decades, since an increasing number of researchers have assumed that evolutionary and historical factors must be considered to properly understand how natural languages work. This book offers new data and insights on some of the research lines which are currently being developed within the framework of diachronic language research. The papers brought together in this volume are characterized both by their originality and by their methodological diversity; the reader will thus find herein theoretical as well as empirical works, undertaken from various perspectives of analysis (diachronic cognitive semantics, grammaticalization theory, discursive traditions, historical phraseology, etc.). The final outcome is an eclectic volume which offers valuable information for every reader, regardless of whether they are experienced linguists or junior researchers willing to know the latest epistemological advances in this discipline.

Book Synopsis El gerundio no perifrástico del español by : Anne Verhaert
Download or read book El gerundio no perifrástico del español written by Anne Verhaert and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Grammaticization, Synchronic Variation, and Language Contact by : Rena Torres Cacoullos
Download or read book Grammaticization, Synchronic Variation, and Language Contact written by Rena Torres Cacoullos and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Old Spanish and present-day Mexico and New Mexico data develops a grammaticization account of variation in progressive constructions. Diachronic changes in cooccurrence patterns show that grammaticization involves reductive change driven by frequency increases. Formal reduction results in the emergence of auxilliary-plus-gerund sequences as fused units. Semantically, the constructions originate as spatial expressions; their grammaticization involves gradual loss of locative features of meaning. Semantic generalization among parallel evolutionary paths results in the competition among different constructions in the domain of progressive aspect. Patterns of synchronic variation follow from both the retention of meaning differences and the routinization of frequent collocations, as well as sociolinguistic factors. Register considerations turn out to be crucial in evaluating the effects of language contact. Purported changes in Spanish — English bilingual varieties are largely a feature of oral, informal language rather than a manifestation of convergence.

Book Synopsis The Languages of the Andes by : Willem F. H. Adelaar
Download or read book The Languages of the Andes written by Willem F. H. Adelaar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Andean and Pacific regions of South America are home to a remarkable variety of languages and language families, with a range of typological differences. This linguistic diversity results from a complex historical background, comprising periods of greater communication between different peoples and languages, and periods of fragmentation and individual development. The Languages of the Andes documents in a single volume the indigenous languages spoken and formerly spoken in this linguistically rich region, as well as in adjacent areas. Grouping the languages into different cultural spheres, it describes their characteristics in terms of language typology, language contact, and the social perspectives of present-day languages. The authors provide both historical and contemporary information, and illustrate the languages with detailed grammatical sketches. Written in a clear and accessible style, this book will be a valuable source for students and scholars of linguistics and anthropology alike.

Book Synopsis Columbia School Linguistics in the 21st Century by : Nancy Stern
Download or read book Columbia School Linguistics in the 21st Century written by Nancy Stern and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the fifth volume of selected papers to emerge from Columbia School (CS) linguistics conferences. A radically functionalist approach, CS shares with Cognitive linguistics the view that grammar is composed of form-meaning correspondences. CS views language as a symbolic tool whose structure is shaped both by its communicative function and by the characteristics of its users. The volume includes papers on methodological issues and innovative analyses on English, Spanish, and Mandarin that illustrate the value of the strict application of clearly spelled out theoretical principles to the execution of linguistic analysis. Four of the volume’s eleven papers are written in Spanish, and all papers have abstracts in both English and Spanish. An introduction highlights the theoretical and analytical premises of CS, and their differences from and similarities with cognitive-functional approaches. The collection will be of interest to researchers and laymen who aim to understand the role of language in human communication.
