Book Synopsis Colonialism and Narrative in Puerto Rico by : Victor C. Simpson
Download or read book Colonialism and Narrative in Puerto Rico written by Victor C. Simpson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the effect of the colonial experience on the protagonists in the novels of Pedro Juan Soto, a renowned author of the Puerto Rican «Generation of 1950». Arguing - in keeping with Soto's generational and personal pessimism - that the protagonists are anti-heroes who struggle with their environment and succumb to it in different ways, it acknowledges that the themes of the Puerto Rican novel are firmly rooted in the island's reality, and offers a cogent review of the literary and socio-political context against which Soto's work must be understood. It also inserts Soto into the canon of post-colonial writers while foregrounding his realist approach to characterization, which is the author's means of articulating his social concerns.
Book Synopsis Writing and the Revolution by : Katie Brown
Download or read book Writing and the Revolution written by Katie Brown and published by Liverpool Latin American Studies. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to recent theories of the 'global' Latin American novel, this book reveals the enduring importance of the national in contemporary Venezuelan fiction, arguing that the novels studied respond to both the nationalist and populist cultural policies of the Bolivarian Revolution and Venezuela's literary isolation. The latter results from factors including the legacy of the Boom and historically low levels of emigration from Venezuela. Grounded in theories of metafiction and intertextuality, the book provides a close reading of eight novels published between 2004 (the year in which the first Minister for Culture was appointed) and 2012 (the last full year of President Chávez's life), relating these novels to the context of their production. Each chapter explores a way in which these novels reflect on writing, from the protagonists as readers and writers in different contexts, through appearances from real life writers, to experiments with style and popular culture, and finally questioning the boundaries between fiction and reality. This literary analysis complements overarching studies of the Bolivarian Revolution by offering an insight into how Bolivarian policies and practices affect people on an individual, emotional and creative level. In this context, self-reflexive narratives afford their writers a form of political agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The education of humanity is the key to the next century's culture, its social and practical life. The main concerns of education are perennial, but the continuous flood of inventions, the technological innovations that re-shape life, calls for a radically new appraisal of the situation, such as only philosophy can provide. Answering the call of humanity for the measure, sense of proportion and direction that could re-orient present and future education, the phenomenology of life - integral and scientific, in a dialogue with the arts, the sciences, and the humanities - proposes an ontopoietic model of life's unfolding as the universal paradigm for this re-orientation. Taking the Human Creative Condition as its Archimedean point, it offers a unique context for a fresh investigation of the concerns of education, both perennial and immediate.

Book Synopsis Ezra Pound and the Spanish World by : Viorica Patea
Download or read book Ezra Pound and the Spanish World written by Viorica Patea and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers for the first time criticism, biographical essays, analysis, translation studies, and reminiscences of Ezra Pound’s extensive interaction with Spain and Spanish culture, from his earliest visits to Spain in 1902 and 1906 and his study of significant Spanish writers to the dedication of the first monument erected anywhere to Pound in the small Spanish village of Medinaceli in 1973. Divided into two sections, Part One: “ON EZRA POUND AND THE SPANISH WORLD” includes a general introduction on Pound’s lifelong involvement with Spain, together with chapters on Pound’s study of classical Spanish literature, the Spanish dimension in The Cantos, Pound’s contemporary Spanish connections, and his legacy in contemporary Spanish letters. Part Two: “EZRA POUND AND THE SPANISH WORLD: A READER,” then gathers for the first time Pound’s own writings (postcards, letters, and essays) concerning Spain and Spanish writers, as well as his correspondence with Spanish poets Migeul de Unamuno and Juan Ramón Jiménez and with José Vázquez Amaral, the first Spanish translator of The Cantos in its entirety. The volume includes reminiscences by Spanish Novísimos poets, Antonio Colinas and Jaime Siles, written explicitly for this collection. Besides providing a thorough exploration into Pound’s engagement with Spain, this volume pays homage to Pound’s considerable influence on Spanish culture.
