Book excerpt: A number of different problems of interest to the operational researcher and the mathematical economist - for example, certain problems of optimization on graphs and networks, of machine-scheduling, of convex analysis and of approx imation theory - can be formulated in a convenient way using the algebraic structure (R,$,@) where we may think of R as the (extended) real-number system with the binary combining operations x$y, x®y defined to be max(x,y),(x+y) respectively. The use of this algebraic structure gives these problems the character of problems of linear algebra, or linear operator theory. This fact hB.s been independently discovered by a number of people working in various fields and in different notations, and the starting-point for the present Lecture Notes was the writer's persuasion that the time had arrived to present a unified account of the algebra of linear transformations of spaces of n-tuples over (R,$,®),to demonstrate its relevance to operational research and to give solutions to the standard linear-algebraic problems which arise - e.g. the solution of linear equations exactly or approximately, the eigenvector eigenvalue problem andso on.Some of this material contains results of hitherto unpublished research carried out by the writer during the years 1970-1977.

Book excerpt: The interest in the mathematical modeling of transportation systems stems from the need to predict how people might make use of new or improved transport infrastruc ture in order to evaluate the benefit of the required investments. To this end it is necessary to build models of the demand for transportation and models that de termine the way in which people who travel use the transportation network. If such models may be constructed and their validity reasonably assured, then the predic tion of the traffic flows on future and present transportation links may be carried out by simulating future situations and then evaluating the potential benefits of alternative improvement projects. In the attempts that were made to construct mathematical models of transportation networks, the notion of equilibrium plays a central role. Suppose that the demand for transportation, that is, the number of trips that occur between the - rious origins and destinations is known. Then it is necessary to determine how these trips are attracted to the alternative routes available between origins and destinations. Knight (1924), gave a simple and intuitively clear description of the behaviour of road traffic under conditions of congestion.

Book excerpt: This collection of articles aspires to be a permanent record of ideas which are likely to become important determinants in the future of management sciences. These papers were initially presented at the first session on Multiple Criteria Decision Making QMCDM) organized under the auspices of The Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS). All works were prepared by leading spokesmen for three generations of OR/MS change agents. Special mention must be made of the dynamic role which Professor Martin K. Starr played in organizing the program of the TIMS XXII International Meeting. In May, 1973, Professor Starr, who was President of TIMS and Program Chairman of the Kyoto conference, requested me to chair the MCDM session. Throughout the long period of formative inter change, Dr. Starr demonstrated his full and continuing support of both the event and the MCDM field. On July 25, 1975, surrounded by the rocky gardens of the Kyoto International Conference Hall (KICH), located on the shore of Takaraga Ike, we engaged in a day-long discussion of MCDM. Our "talk together in Kyoto" was a professional experience of the highest intensity for participants, speakers and audience alike.

Book excerpt: The following monograph deals with the approximate stochastic behavior of a system consisting of a sequence of servers in series with finite storage between consecutive servers. The methods employ deterministic queueing and diffusion approximations which are valid under conditions in which the storages and the queue lengths are typically large compared with 1. One can disregard the fact that the customer counts must be integer valued and treat the queue as if it were a (stochastic) continuous fluid. In these approximations, it is not necessary to describe the detailed probability distribution of service times; it suffices simply to specify the rate of service and the variance rate (the variance of the number served per unit time). Specifically, customers are considered to originate from an infinite reservoir. They first pass through a server with service rate ~O' vari ance rate ~O' into a storage of finite capacity c . They then pass l through a server with service rate ~l' variance rate ~l' into a storage of capacity c ' etc., until finally, after passing through an nth server, 2 they go into an infinite reservoir (disappear). If any jth storage become , n , the service at the j-lth server is interrupted full j = 1, 2, and, of course, if a jth storage becomes empty the jth server is inter rupted; otherwise, services work at their maximum rate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current1y there is a vast amount of literature on nonlinear programming in finite dimensions. The pub1ications deal with convex analysis and severa1 aspects of optimization. On the conditions of optima1ity they deal mainly with generali- tions of known results to more general problems and also with less restrictive assumptions. There are also more general results dealing with duality. There are yet other important publications dealing with algorithmic deve10pment and their applications. This book is intended for researchers in nonlinear programming, and deals mainly with convex analysis, optimality conditions and duality in nonlinear programming. It consolidates the classic results in this area and some of the recent results. The book has been divided into two parts. The first part gives a very comp- hensive background material. Assuming a background of matrix algebra and a senior level course in Analysis, the first part on convex analysis is self-contained, and develops some important results needed for subsequent chapters. The second part deals with optimality conditions and duality. The results are developed using extensively the properties of cones discussed in the first part. This has faci- tated derivations of optimality conditions for equality and inequality constrained problems. Further, minimum-principle type conditions are derived under less restrictive assumptions. We also discuss constraint qualifications and treat some of the more general duality theory in nonlinear programming.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to illuminate the central issues of dynamic analysis applied to economic models, using a generally accepted language of the study of dynamical systems at a level of sophistication likely to be understood by an economist versed in elementary topology. Whether an economic system is governed by a first order difference equation or several simultaneous multivalued partial differential equations, its solution is a flow that determines the state of the system given an initial condition and elapsed time. Thus the flow of a system is the central concept from which the theory here expounded develops. The explicit examples and applications herein are discrete time models, but the theoretical re sults hold for continuous time models as well. The supplementary bibliography in cludes several papers at the frontier of set-valued dynamics which may be viewed using the basic concepts defined in this text; all of these works involve demon strating that (almost) all possible trajectories that a system may follow converge to some set of equilibria. The application of set valued dynamical analysis to economic models is pro~ vided to engender in the reader an appreciation for the relevance of these con cepts to economic theory.

Book excerpt: The basic idea behind this book is that in a market economy there is endless variety, people die and are born, new products and processes emerge and old ones disappear etc. Some firms grow others decline. Some people get high salaries others get unemployed. Opportunities, disasters and capabilities are to a large extent random. An economy has a certain amount of resources to divide among its members. These resources may vary over time but the rate of change is fairly small. The number of persons in society may also vary but the rate of change is limited. For a society such as the one described above I was interested in deriving equilibrium distributions of various kinds and make some tests of the distributions found against data for different countries. I have studied the following types of distributions a) Income distribution b) Functional distribution of income c) Size distributions of firms. Since the above mentioned distributions are related; another main purpose of the book has been to develop a similar method for the analysis of all three distributions in order to simplify the understanding of their relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this collection of essays is to acquaint the English speaking reader with the work of the IFO Institute for Economic Re search, tlunich, in the field of business cycle surveys. These written surveys of about 10,000 businessmen in the West German economy collect information which is not otherwise contained in the official statis tics. The information in question primarily involves entrepreneurial judgements and anticipations (plans and expectations). These variables have proved to be very useful for economic diagnosis and prognosis. In the meantime, the survey methods developed by the IFO Institute have been adopted by 16 different countries throughout the world. The monthly business cycle surveys carried out by the EEC Commission, Brussels, in the industries of the member countries are also based to a large extent on the IFO methods. This is the first publication in English to furnish a comprehensive review of the IFO survey technique and the possibilities of utilization of this survey method in business cycle research. Efforts to develop new economic indicators on the basis of judgement and anticipation data have not yet terminated; many theoretical and methodical questions have still to be answered, and perhaps many have yet to be posed. Accordingly, the following collection of ten essays is not a final stock-taking but an interim report on several paths taken by the IFO Institute in its search for economic indicators. Possibly, some of these will later prove to have been a roundabout way.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to survey computational flow research on the design and analysis of supercritical wing sections supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Energy Research and Development Administration Mathematics and Computing Laboratory of New York University. The work was performed under NASA Grants NGR 33-016-167 and NGR 33-016-201 and ERDA Contract EY-76-C-02-3077. Computer programs to be listed and described have applications in the study of flight of modern aircraft at high sub sonic speeds. One of the codes generates cascades of shockless tran sonic airfoi~s that are expected to increase significantly the effici ency of compressors and turbines. Good simulation of physically observed flows has been achieved. This work is a sequel to two earlier books [1,2] published by Springer-Verlag under similar titles that we shall refer to as Volumes I and II. New York November 1977 TABLE OF CONTENTS I.
