Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Review of Business Studies, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: This short essay is based on an Harvard Business School article published 2004 “Strategic Review at Egon Zehnder International (A)” by Morell & Nanda. Egon Zehnder’s strategy resonates mainly between two poles: “Clients first” and the “One firm partnership concept”. Like the earthly poles, there lies a field in-between and both poles might over the years also shift (if not switch one day). The internal focus clearly impacts the way Egon Zehnder is perceived (from different stakeholders in different ways of course) and the people who now became partner (through a strict selection process) talk to the clients in a way that clients feel “really being first”. Looking at the current partners of Egon Zehnder they all have a solid background and worked for top notch fortune 500 companies, so it seems to be fair to assume that they speak the language of the clients and might often know their customers from previous jobs or business schools they attended.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,7, European Business School - International University Schlo Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Introduction Problem and objectives Historically, there have been two competing investment theories. On the one hand there is the traditional efficient markets theory, which states that share prices fully reflect market information and therefore only temporary mispricing occurs. The traditional investments to buy and hold equity and bonds, which benefit principally from market direction is based on this theory. On the other hand the second theory argues that greater inefficiencies occur, and therefore opportunities can arise that enable investors to exploit mispriced securities without facing excessive levels of risk. This is the principal argument behind hedge fund investing. In the Oxford dictionary, the term "hedge" is described as a way of protecting yourself against a loss, especially money. To achieve this goal, hedge funds use a wide range of different investment strategies. These strategies are partly very complex and therefore sometimes very difficult to comprehend for the investor. This fact contributes mainly to the negative image of hedge funds in the general public. But the truth is that as hedge funds exploit chances of winning which result from market imperfections, they actually support and improve the stability of the financial systems. The hedge fund industry experienced a very strong growth in the last two decades and represents a good alternative investment opportunity to traditional asset classes. Therefore this paper aims to provide an overview of the numerous hedge fund strategies which are applied by the increasing number of hedge funds. This knowledge is needed as some specialists already expect that traditional mutual funds may not be able to avoid adopting respectively integrating s

Book excerpt: Filmatized in 2013 and the official recipient of three Oscars, Solomon Northup's powerful slave narrative 'Twelve Years a Slave' depicts Nortup's life as he is sold into slavery after having spent 32 years of his life living as a free man in New York. Working as a travelling musician, Northup goes to Washington D.C, where he is kidnapped, sent to New Orleans, and sold to a planter to suffer the relentless and brutal life of a slave. After a dozen years, Northup escapes to return to his family and pulls no punches, as he describes his fate and that of so many other black people at the time. It is a harrowing but vitally important book, even today. For further reading on this subject, try 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Solomon Northup (c.1807-c.1875) was an American abolitionist and writer, best remembered for his powerful race memoir 'Twelve Years a Slave'. At the age of 32, when he was a married farmer, father-of-three, violinist and free-born man, he was kidnapped in Washington D.C and shipped to New Orleans, sold to a planter and enslaved for a dozen years. When he gained his freedom, he wrote his famous memoir and spent some years lecturing across the US,on behalf of the abolitionist movement. 'Twelve Years a Slave' was published a year after 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe and built on the anti-slavery momentum it had developed. Northup's final years are something of a mystery, though it is thought that he struggled to cope with family life after being freed.

Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book excerpt: Gavin de Becker's landmark book THE GIFT OF FEAR showed millions of readers how to better protect themselves from violence and unwarranted fear. Now, in FEAR LESS, de Becker answers the questions many Americans have been asking since September 11th: Can air travel be safe? What is the risk of biological or chemical attack? Can the government detect and prevent future acts? How can we best talk to our children about what has happened and what might happen? What can we do to reduce fear and worry? What specific steps can we take to reduce terrorism? What are terrorists likely to do next? Most simply, is everything going to be all right? De Becker says, "Just as your imagination has placed you in frightening situations, it is now time to place yourself in empowering situations, time to see that you have a role to play, and contrary to so many TV news stories, it isn't just victim-in-waiting." FEAR LESS offers specific recommendations that can enhance our national security and our individual safety and help put fear into perspective. Nobody in the world understands risk and safety better than Gavin de Becker. At a time of uncertainty, terrorism, and a whole new set of rules, it is hard to imagine a more important, more reassuring, and more necessary book than FEAR LESS.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: A, Webster Graduate School London, language: English, abstract: The Fritz-Kola GmbH is a German enterprise founded in 2003 by Lorenz Hampl and Mirco Wolf Wiegert, two students from Hamburg. The original idea behind the product was to create a cola drink that tastes different from the products of Coca-Cola or Pepsi, being less sweet with more caffeine. Focussing on the distribution through restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, the brand became popular among the targeted group of young individualists and party-goers. It is due to that popularity, which also was supported by the trend of supporting regional brands, that Fritz-Kola’s revenues were increasing by two over three years in a row. In 2006, the company launched other beverages like lemonades and a ‘morning-cola’ that has the taste of coffee and caramel. By 2010, the company’s revenue was €2.7 million. The internationalization of its products is an on-going process. Today, Fritz-Kola is available in Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Belgium. Fritz Kola is also available in the UK, but only in one restaurant, which is a German restaurant importing the product from Germany. The corporate objectives of Fritz-Kola GmbH are not to become a market leader in the segment of soft drinks, but to provide a considerable alternative to the big players like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. For that reason, the company strives to create a diversified product portfolio under the brand name Fritz-Kola, consisting of cola lemonades.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,3, Kingston University London, language: English, abstract: This marketing report focuses on Tesla Motors (TM), a young company specialised in manufacturing high performance premium electric vehicles and vehicle powertrain engineering which was founded in 2003 in Silicon Valley. With TM's first launch of its Model S in 2012, it introduced the self-described "world's first premium electric sedan" (Tesla Motors, 2015) which brought TM on its successful way into the EV market. The analysis of TM's external marketing environment illustrates that tax incentives promote the use of EVs and thus demand for TM's products. Moreover, the economic factors such as fuel prices, raw material prices and volatility in exchange rates of USD against EUR, have a significant impact on sales and profitability. Increasing awareness of climate change and sustainable environment boosts customers' demand and makes the EV market more attractive for TM however range anxiety still hinders further demand. Advancements and R&D in technology are important to improve the charging network which may reduce range anxiety. Safety regulations determine TM's whole manufacturing processes and intellectual property secures successful factors of TM. Tesla's 'Gigafactory' is a major opportunity to reduce production costs and increase capacity of battery packs, making TM more competitive. However, threats such as increasing material costs and increased competition in the EV market exert more pressure on TM's competitiveness. The analysis of TM's internal market environment shows that TM's strength is relying on its powertrain engineering and innovative product development, exclusive product design, unique customer service and brand reputation, which are TM's core competencies and thus difficult for competitors to imitate. TM's human resources, in-house capa
