Book excerpt: A detailed analysis and solution of the problem of scattering by a perfectly electrically conducting body of revolution using the dual surface electric field integral equation (DSEFIE) is given for the first time. Scattering calculations using the DSEFIE are free from the spurious resonances that can seriously degrade the accuracy of calculations made using the conventional electric field integral equation or magnetic field integral equation. The Galerkin form of the method of moments is used to solve the DSEFIE, and the solution is given by detailed expressions suitable for computer programming. Calculations performed with a computer program of the DSEFIE solution demonstrate the removal of spurious resonances from radar cross section patterns of spheres, spheroids, and finite cylinders obtained with the conventional electric field integral equation. Cone-sphere scattering calculations show the importance of careful placement of the dual surface when the DSEFIE is applied to scatterers with narrow tips.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the problem of electromagnetic wave excitation in spatial regions with spherical boundaries and the accurate mathematical modeling based on numerical and analytical methods to significantly reduce the time required for developing new antenna devices. It particularly focuses on elements and systems on mobile objects of complex shape that are made of new technological materials. The experimental development of such devices and systems is an extremely time-consuming, lengthy, and expensive process. The book is intended for senior and postgraduate students and researchers working in the fields of radiophysics, radio engineering and antenna design. The authors assume that readers understand the basics of vector and tensor analysis, as well as the general theory of electrodynamics. The original results presented can be directly used in the development of spherical antennas and antenna systems for the mobile objects. The book addresses problems concerning the construction of Green’s functions for Hertz potentials in electrodynamic volumes with spherical boundaries, and solves these clearly and concisely. It also uses specific examples to analyze areas where the results could potentially be applied. The book covers the following topics: · excitation of electromagnetic fields in coordinate electrodynamic volumes; · Green’s functions for spherical resonators; · Green’s functions for infinite space outside of spherical scatterers; · electromagnetic fields of dipole radiators on spherical scatterers; · electromagnetic fields of thin radial impedance vibrators on perfectly conducting spheres; · electrodynamic characteristics of narrow slots in spherical surfaces; · multi-element and combined vibrator-slot radiators on spherical surfaces.

Book excerpt: In this research the electromagnetic scattering of a plane wave from a two-dimensional cavity embedded in an infinite, perfectly conducting ground plane is investigated. The plane wave is assumed to be under transverse electric (TE) polarization with respect to the x-axis. The cavity may be empty or filled with an arbitrary homogeneous, lossy material. A coupled set of scalar integral equations that govern the electromagnetic scattering is implemented. An approximate solution to the scalar integral equations is found via a Method of Moments (MoM) algorithm. The algorithm is implemented in a computer code, and approximations to the total magnetic field on the cavity surface and aperture as well as the normal derivative of the total magnetic field on the cavity aperture are obtained. These fields are then used to calculate the two-dimensional monostatic RCS signatures of various test cavities. The numerical results from the algorithm are shown to agree well with the RCS signatures calculated by other well-known methods and published results. In addition to being accurate, the algorithm is very computationally efficient. The process results in simply solving a relatively small, well-conditioned matrix system for each incident angle to produce the unknown fields.

Book excerpt: The solution of electromagnetic scattering by objects located in planar, multilayered media has long been the subject of active research. For layered-media integral equation solutions via the Method of Moments (MoM), the O($Nsp2$) matrix fill is often prohibitively expensive, even for problems of moderate size. For spatial-domain formulations, this is due to the presence of the Sommerfeld integrals required for obtaining the Green's functions in spatial form. These integrals are completely avoided through use of the complex-image method, which represents the spatial-domain Green's functions in closed form. However, this method is not without limitations, most notably a finite region of validity and an undesirable sensitivity to the choice of requisite parameters. This thesis focuses on methods for overcoming these limitations, to allow robust implementation of the method within the framework of an automated, general-purpose analysis program, applicable to the solution of scattering from arbitrarily shaped objects residing in any number of dielectric layers. Evaluations of several possible improvements to the original complex-image method are presented. A new approach is also presented for representing the angular-dependent Green's function terms that are required when both horizontal and vertical electric currents are present. The complex-image method is applied in this work to the MoM solution of the mixed-potential form of the electric field integral equation (MPIE). Several numerical results are presented for planar and nonplanar objects, including a microstrip patch antenna, wire dipole antennas penetrating dielectric half-spaces, and a microstrip air bridge. These results are compared with measurements or the results from other programs whenever possible. A brief discussion of scattering parameter extraction is also covered, with a comparison of the Prony and Generalized Pencil-of-Functions (GPOF) methods.

Book excerpt: This work presents the Clifford-Cauchy-Dirac (CCD) technique for solving problems involving the scattering of electromagnetic radiation from materials of all kinds. It allows anyone who is interested to master techniques that lead to simpler and more efficient solutions to problems of electromagnetic scattering than are currently in use. The technique is formulated in terms of the Cauchy kernel, single integrals, Clifford algebra and a whole-field approach. This is in contrast to many conventional techniques that are formulated in terms of Green's functions, double integrals, vector calculus and the combined field integral equation (CFIE). Whereas these conventional techniques lead to an implementation using the method of moments (MoM), the CCD technique is implemented as alternating projections onto convex sets in a Banach space. The ultimate outcome is an integral formulation that lends itself to a more direct and efficient solution than conventionally is the case, and applies without exception to all types of materials. On any particular machine, it results in either a faster solution for a given problem or the ability to solve problems of greater complexity. The Clifford-Cauchy-Dirac technique offers very real and significant advantages in uniformity, complexity, speed, storage, stability, consistency and accuracy.

Book excerpt: The electric field integral equation (EFIE) is used with the moment to develop a simple and efficient numerical procedure for treating problems of scattering by arbitrarily-shaped objects. The objects are modeled for numerical purposes by planar triangular surface patch models. Because the EFIE formulation is used, the procedure is applicable to both open and closed bodies. Crucial to the formulation is development of a set of special subdomain basis functions defined on pairs of adjacent triangular patches. The basis functions yield a current representation which is free of line or point charges at subdomain boundaries. A second approach using the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) and employing the same basis functions is also developed. Although the MFIE applies only to closed bodies, the moment matrix of the MFIE is also needed in dielectric scattering problems and in the so-called combined field integral equation used to eliminate difficulties with internal resonances present in the MFIE and EFIE formulations. The EFIE approach is applied to the scattering problems of plane wave illumination of a flat square plate, a bent square plate, a circular disk, and a sphere. Comparisons of surface current densities are made with previous computations or exact formulations and good agreement is obtained in each case. The MFIE approach is also applied to the sphere and reasonable agreement with exact calculations is obtained.

Book excerpt: This report investigates the scattering of electromagnetic waves by a perfectly conducting object. The incident field is assumed to be time harmonic and the scatterer a closed bounded Lyapunov surface with no holes. A boundary integral equation for the total field (incident plus scattered) is derived using an integral representation of the total field analogous to Green's formula. The proof that this boundary integral equation can be solved by iteration rests on showing that the spectral radius of the resulting integral operator is less than one for small perturbations of the corresponding potential operator.
