Book Synopsis Effect of Wing Modifications on the Longitudinal Stability of a Tailless All-wing Airplane Model by : Charles L. Seacord
Download or read book Effect of Wing Modifications on the Longitudinal Stability of a Tailless All-wing Airplane Model written by Charles L. Seacord and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of the power-off longitudinal stability characteristics of a tailless all-wing airplane model with various wing modifications has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. Force and tuft tests were made on the model in the original condition, with the wing tips rotated for washout, with rectangular and swept-forward tips, and with various slat arrangements. Flight tests were made with the original wing and with the original wing equipped with the most promising modifications. The results indicated that changes in tip plan form or rotation of the wing tips did not appreciably reduce the instability at high lift coefficients. Addition of wing slats, however, improved the longitudinal stability at the stall when the slat extended far enough inboard to cover the area that tended to stall first.
Book Synopsis Introductory Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics of Wings and Bodies by : Frederick O. Smetana
Download or read book Introductory Aerodynamics and Hydrodynamics of Wings and Bodies written by Frederick O. Smetana and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This textbook and its six supporting computer programs provide theoretical modeling of the aerodynamic characteristics of wings and bodies at low Mach numbers. The approach presented directly helps engineering students improve problem-solving skills by teaching them to discern the necessary steps associated with solving analytical problems. The book also presents a justification and rationale for validating end results that leave the student with an understanding of the answer. The text differs from others by providing interactive computer programs that allow the student to conduct trade studies. It provides case-specific software that permits the student to do considerably more characteristic analysis of user-selected wings and bodies than is possible with other introductory textbooks. In addition, the algorithms are capable of working problems at a level well beyond those typically solved by hand in other textbooks. This approach allows students to determine easily the effects of modifying parameters and geometry. Another benefit of using this textbook is the understanding students gain of the capabilities of large industrial codes.
Book Synopsis Effects of Wing and Nacelle Modifications on Drag and Wake Characteristics of a Bomber-type Airplane Model by : Robert H. Neely
Download or read book Effects of Wing and Nacelle Modifications on Drag and Wake Characteristics of a Bomber-type Airplane Model written by Robert H. Neely and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of a model of a large four-engine bomber was conducted in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine the effects of several wing and nacelle modification on drag characteristics and air-flow characteristics at the tail. Leading-edge gloves, trailing-edge extensions, and modified nacelle afterbodies were tested individually and in combination. The effects of the various modifications were determined by force tests, tuft observations, and turbulence surveys in the region of the tail. Tests were made with fixed and natural transition on the wing and with propellers operating and propellers off. Most of the tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of approximately 2.6 x 106. The results indicated that application of certain of the modifications provided worth-while improvements in the characteristics of the model. The flow over the wing and flaps was improved, the drag was reduced, and the turbulence in the region of the tail was reduced.
