Book excerpt: An analysis was performed to determine the effects on the rates of convective heat transfer produced by arbitrary variations of the surface temperature with distance along a flat plate. The analysis was confined to the case of a low-speed turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate oriented parallel to the free-stream velocity. It was found that a continuously variable surface temperature has, in general, a smaller effect on the local convective heat transfer than does a surface-temperature discontinuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convection heat transfer is an important topic both for industrial applications and fundamental aspects. It combines the complexity of the flow dynamics and of the active or passive scalar transport process. It is part of many university courses such as Mechanical, Aeronautical, Chemical and Biomechanical Engineering. The literature on convective heat transfer is large, but the present manuscript differs in many aspects from the existing ones, particularly from the pedagogical point of view. Each chapter begins with a brief yet complete presentation of the related topic. This is followed by a series of solved problems. The latter are scrupulously detailed and complete the synthetic presentation given at the beginning of each chapter. There are about 50 solved problems, which are mostly original with gradual degree of complexity including those related to recent findings in convective heat transfer phenomena. Each problem is associated with clear indications to help the reader to handle independently the solution. The book contains nine chapters including laminar external and internal flows, convective heat transfer in laminar wake flows, natural convection in confined and no-confined laminar flows, turbulent internal flows, turbulent boundary layers, and free shear flows.

Book excerpt: In regions as densely populated as Western Europe, prediction of the ecological implications of pollutant transport are important in order to minimise damage in the case of accidents, and to evaluate the possible influence of existing or planned sources. In most cases, such predictions depend on high-speed computation. The present textbook presents a mathematically explicit introduction in eight chapters: 1: An introduction to the basics of fluid dynamics of the atmosphere and the local events and mesoscale processes. 2: The types of PDEs describing atmospheric flows for limited area models, the problem of appropriate boundary conditions describing the topographical constraints, and well-posedness. 3: Thermodynamics of the atmosphere, dry and wet, its stability, and radiation processes, budgets and the influence of their sum. 4: Scaling and similarity laws for stable and convective turbulent atmospheric boundary layers and the influence of inhomogeneous terrain on the advection and the vertical dispersion, and the method of large eddy simulation. 5: Statistical processes in turbulent dispersion, turbulent diffusion and chemical reactions in fluxes. 6: Theoretical modelling of diffusion and dispersion of pollutant gases. 7: The influence of urban heat production on local climate. 8: Atmospheric inversion layers and lapping inversion, the stable boundary layer and nocturnal inversion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Mantle Dynamics, Volume 7 aims to provide both a classical and state-of-the-art introduction to the methods and science of mantle dynamics, as well as survey leading order problems (both solved and unsolved) and current understanding of how the mantle works. It is organized around two themes: (1) how is mantle convection studied; and (2) what do we understand about mantle dynamics to date. The first four chapters are thus concerned with pedagogical reviews of the physics of mantle convection; laboratory studies of the fluid dynamics of convection relevant to the mantle; theoretical analysis of mantle dynamics; and numerical analysis and methods of mantle convection. The subsequent chapters concentrate on leading issues of mantle convection itself, which include the energy budget of the mantle; the upper mantle and lithosphere in and near the spreading center (mid-ocean ridge) environment; the dynamics of subducting slabs; hot spots, melting anomalies, and mantle plumes; and finally, geochemical mantle dynamics and mixing. - Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic in detail - Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research - Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding - Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Book excerpt: In turbulent boundary layers it has been suggested that if the fluid is accelerated in the main flow direction, the whole flow structure may undergo a partial or complete decay to laminar; some depression in convective heat transfer is experienced and the usual turbulent boundary layer theories fail to produce a satisfactory solution. The effects of acceleration on heat transfer in confined flows has received comparatively less attention. In this thesis, these effects are investigated and suitable thermal boundary conditions under which no other significant influence apart from acceleration is encountered, are determined. This is initially discussed with other considerations regarding the effects of velocity profile on heat transfer, as well as some theoretical investigation of a simple turbulence model applied to the problem. Based on a dimensional argument, an acceleration parameter has been proposed and its ability to provide some guide to the effects of moderate and severe acceleration is demonstrated. The experimental programme has been carefully designed to comply with the theoretical findings and in particular the requirement for special heat flux boundary conditions.......

Book excerpt: This monograph presents results of the analytical and numerical modeling of convective heat and mass transfer in different rotating flows caused by (i) system rotation, (ii) swirl flows due to swirl generators, and (iii) surface curvature in turns and bends. Volume forces (i.e. centrifugal and Coriolis forces), which influence the flow pattern, emerge in all of these rotating flows. The main part of this work deals with rotating flows caused by system rotation, which includes several rotating-disk configurations and straight pipes rotating about a parallel axis. Swirl flows are studied in some of the configurations mentioned above. Curvilinear flows are investigated in different geometries of two-pass ribbed and smooth channels with 180° bends. The author demonstrates that the complex phenomena of fluid flow and convective heat transfer in rotating flows can be successfully simulated using not only the universal CFD methodology, but in certain cases by means of the integral methods, self-similar and analytical solutions. The book will be a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of heat and mass transfer.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research program was to investigate the effects of surface roughness on turbulent boundary layer heat transfer by obtaining accurate, comprehensive, quality heat transfer data for zero pressure gradient incompressible air flow over constant temperature test surfaces with well-defined surface roughness geometries. Knowledge gained from the experimental investigation was used to improve and extend the roughness energy transport model used in the discrete element prediction method, thus enhancing and expanding the capability to predict the effects of surface roughness on turbulent flow and heat transfer. Fluid dynamics and heat transfer data for turbulent boundary layer flow over a smooth and five rough surfaces were taken in the Turbulent Heat Transfer Test Facility (THTTF) for x-Reynolds numbers ranging up to 10,000,000. The smooth wall data was used for qualification of the THTTF and provided base line data for comparison with the data from rough surfaces.
