Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine fifth graders' attitudes toward mathematics and achievements in mathematics when taught in real-world situations in the outdoor setting of a national refuge. Does authentic math instruction in an outdoor environment affect students' attitudes toward math when compared to students in a traditional classroom setting? Does authentic math instruction in an outdoor environment affect students' math achievement when compared to students in a traditional classroom setting? Fifth grade students who did not participate in the program at the national refuge setting but instead were taught in a traditional classroom setting acted as the control group. The researcher reviewed achievement data and gave pre- and post-surveys on attitudes toward math to measure academic achievement and gain student's perspectives on attitudes toward math, confidence in math, usefulness of math, and usefulness of math in the outdoors. Academically, math achievement scores grew at a similar rate for both the treatment group and the control group. More questions had significant differences of the mean from the treatment group's attitude surveys than from the control group's attitude surveys. The findings from this study suggest continuing to integrate instruction in this outdoor setting to improve attitudes toward math. A recommendation is made to do a follow up survey when these same students are more developmentally mature to understand the possible longitudinal effects of the program.

Book excerpt: Engage students in mathematics using growth mindset techniques The most challenging parts of teaching mathematics are engaging students and helping them understand the connections between mathematics concepts. In this volume, you'll find a collection of low floor, high ceiling tasks that will help you do just that, by looking at the big ideas at the fifth-grade level through visualization, play, and investigation. During their work with tens of thousands of teachers, authors Jo Boaler, Jen Munson, and Cathy Williams heard the same message—that they want to incorporate more brain science into their math instruction, but they need guidance in the techniques that work best to get across the concepts they needed to teach. So the authors designed Mindset Mathematics around the principle of active student engagement, with tasks that reflect the latest brain science on learning. Open, creative, and visual mathematics tasks have been shown to improve student test scores, and more importantly change their relationship with mathematics and start believing in their own potential. The tasks in Mindset Mathematics reflect the lessons from brain science that: There is no such thing as a math person - anyone can learn mathematics to high levels. Mistakes, struggle and challenge are the most important times for brain growth. Speed is unimportant in mathematics. Mathematics is a visual and beautiful subject, and our brains want to think visually about mathematics. With engaging questions, open-ended tasks, and four-color visuals that will help kids get excited about mathematics, Mindset Mathematics is organized around nine big ideas which emphasize the connections within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and can be used with any current curriculum.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether fifth grade students who received instruction in a departmentalized setting achieved higher mean scale scores on the reading and math sections of the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) than students who were taught in a traditional setting. Two one-way between-groups analyses of covariance were conducted to control for previous achievement while seeking to determine if a statistically significant difference existed in the mean reading and math scale scores of fifth grade students who were taught in different organizational structures. The findings suggest that students who received instruction in departmentalized settings scored higher on the reading and math portions of the 2010 CRCT.

Book excerpt: This study examined possible differences between a project-based learning (PBL) instructional approach and a traditional textbook-based instructional approach. The study’s importance was derived from the fact that additional exploration is needed to show that PBL can promote student learning and may be more effective than traditional instruction in social studies. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to test the constructivist theory of instruction as it relates to a comparison of PBL and a traditional textbook-based instructional approach. The researcher identified two population samples. The first population sample was designated as the treatment group consisting of all fifth-grade students attending a public charter school in north Georgia (n = 83) that utilized a PBL instructional approach. The second population sample was designated as the comparison group consisting of all fifth-grade students attending a public elementary school in central Georgia (n = 115) that utilized a traditional textbook-based instructional approach. A causal-comparative design with a t-test analysis was conducted on the difference between social studies achievement scores based on the Georgia Milestones Assessment System Social Studies Grade 5 End-of-Grade content assessment. The results of an independent samples t-test did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the PBL treatment group and the traditional textbook-based comparison group on social studies achievement. From this result, the conclusion was that PBL and non-PBL instructional modalities yield similar results. Further research should include a closer examination of which instructional modality is more effective.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how differentiating mathematical instruction for fifth-grade upper-level learning students would impact their learning. The students were involved in mathematical challenges at their instructional level to see if they would show advancement with their mathematical knowledge and become more motivated in the classroom. This study used a pretest/posttest design during the fall trimester of the 2010-2011 school year. At the beginning of the study, the students were given an attitude survey to assess their feeling about mathematics an their current motivational levels in math class. They were also given a prealgebra pretest and the mid-year fifth-year grade assessment to determine what types of mathematical challenges would benefit them. After nine weeks, students were given the attitude survey again to determine if their attitudes and motivational levels about math class changed from the use of determine if their attitudes and motivational levels about math class changed from the use of differentiated math instruction. They were also given the prealgebra posttest, along with the mid-year fifth-grade assessment a final time to assess how much growth was made with their mathematical knowledge after receiving the differentiated instruction. During the study, the Iowa City Community School District's math curriculum. Everyday Math, was used as the main source of instruction and supplemental support was given through the book Real World Algebra, written by Edward Zaccaro. Assessments were given and data were collected on a regular basis through observation and the completion of the Everyday Math enrichment activities and the Real World Algebra practice pages. The data and results showed an increase in both the students' math skills and motivational levels in math class, which supported the hypothesis.
