Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study includes the results of (1) a field study to determine the tire inflation pressures currently being carried by Texas highways, (2) a literature and analytical study to determine what tire contact pressures are actually being applied by modern tires to pavements, and (3) an analytical study to evaluate the effect of those contact pressures on the stresses and strains in typical Texas flexible pavements. Descriptions of the analytical studies include discussions of the finite element computer program used to model the tire carcass and the flexible pavements. The tires included in the analytical study included both truck and passenger car tires operated at typical loads and inflation pressures.

Book Synopsis Effects of Automobile Tire Loads on Thin Flexible Pavements by : Freddy L. Roberts
Download or read book Effects of Automobile Tire Loads on Thin Flexible Pavements written by Freddy L. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes the results of an analytical study of the effects of automobile tire loads on thin asphalt pavements over flexible bases. Two different ways of calculating the tire contact pressure were used and the strains induced in the pavement structure were evaluated. The uniform pressure tire model assumes that the tire contact pressure is equal to the tire inflation pressure. The Tielking tire model is a finite element computer program that models the tire as a shell of revolution and calculates the contact pressure distribution by using the tire carcass properties and the tire load.
Book Synopsis Effect of Truck Tire Inflation Pressure and Axle Load on Pavement Performance by :
Download or read book Effect of Truck Tire Inflation Pressure and Axle Load on Pavement Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an investigation into the effect of truck tire inflation pressure and axle load on flexible and rigid pavement performance as determined using computer analysis. The flexible pavement analysis was conducted with both a nonuniform pressure model and a uniform pressure model as input to the elastic layer program BISAR and the 3D finite element program TEXGAP-3D. A rigid pavement analysis was conducted with both a nonuniform pressure model and a uniform pressure model as input to the program JSLAB.

Book excerpt: "The effects of tire pressure on flexible pavement response and performance were evaluated using data from the first phase of research at the Federal Highway Administration's Pavement Testing Facility. The Accelerated Loading Facility testing machine was used to simulate traffic loading. The evaluation consisted of three components. First, deflections and strains for various combinations of load and tire pressure were measured and compared. Second, rutting and cracking for two test sections trafficked with the same load but different tire pressures were evaluated. Finally, changes in the pavement materials resulting from traffic were compared for the two sections trafficked with different tire pressures. These three evaluations showed tire pressure to be a second order effect. The effect of tire pressure on flexible pavement response and performance was less significant the effects of load and temperature. During the response experiment, when load and temperature were constant, the effects of tire pressure could be observed. However, in the performance and materials evaluations, the effects of increased tire pressure were masked by differences in temperature"--Technical report documentation page.

Book Synopsis Pavement Damage as Related to Tires, Pressures, Axle Loads, and Configurations by : PE. Sebaaly
Download or read book Pavement Damage as Related to Tires, Pressures, Axle Loads, and Configurations written by PE. Sebaaly and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dual radial tires and wide base radial single tires were tested in the laboratory under three levels of inflation pressures and axial loads. The measured characteristics of the tires were gross contact area, net area, tire deflection, and contact pressures. The distributions of contact pressures were used in a theoretical analysis to evaluate the flexible pavement performance related parameter. The response of two flexible pavement structures was investigated in terms of the tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt layer. In the second phase of this research, two full scale pavement sections were instrumented using strain gages to measure the strains at the bottom of the asphalt concrete layer. The data analysis presented in this paper shows the effect of varying the tire type, tire inflation pressure, and axle load and configuration on the response of flexible pavements. The results of the two studies showed that the wide base single tires are more damaging than the dual tires under all combinations of the test variables.
