Book excerpt: Cladding specimens were obtained from two fuel rods irradiated in the Big Rock Point Reactor to a burnup of ~8 gigawatt days per ton. Both claddings had a uniform, thick (~4 μm) zirconium oxide layer on the inner surface. The significant difference between the two rods was the degree of fission-gas release (0.2 versus 14.3 percent). The high-gas-release rod contained a significantly greater amount of fission-product deposits, and, in some areas, breaks in the inner-surface oxide were observed. The cladding speciments, with the fuel removed, were subjected to stress-rupture tests in an iodine environment using internal gas pressurization to evaluate their stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility. All tests were conducted at an initial iodine concentration of 0.6 mg/cm2 and a temperature of 325°C. Specimens from the high-gas-release rod exhibited signifciantly increased susceptibility to iodine SCC, with a threshold stress level of ~200 MPa as compared with ~280 MPa in the specimens from the low-gas-release rod. The results suggest that the inner-surface oxide provides a barrier to iodine penetration. Hence, the thick unbreached oxide on the low-gas-release rod provided greater resistance to iodine SCC than the breached oxide on the high-gas-release rod.

The study shows that the material's resistance to stress (as captured by the yield stress of a high-energy grain boundary) is related to the surface coverage of iodine, with the implication that ISCC is the result of adsorption-enhanced decohesion.

It is shown that unless stress corrosion crack growth in irradiated Zircaloy is able to proceed at very low stress intensifications, fracture is unlikely when there are uniform friction effects at the fuel-cladding interface, when the interfacial friction coefficient is less than unity, when a symmetric distribution of fuel cracks exists, and when symmetric interfacial slippage occurs (that is, "uniform" conditions). Otherwise, the observed fuel rod failures must be due to departures from uniform conditions, and this investigation shows that a very high interfacial friction coefficient, and particularly fuel-cladding bonding, are means of providing sufficient stress intensification at a cladding crack tip to explain the occurrence of cladding fractures.

The test temperatures and hoop stresses ranged from 320 to 360/sup 0/C and 150 to 500 MPa, respectively. The results indicate that irradiation, in general, increases the susceptibility of Zircaloy to iodine SCC. For specimens that experienced fluences>2 x 10/sup 21/ n/cm/sup 2/ (E>0.1 MeV), the 24-h failure stress was 177+-18 MPa, regardless of the preirradiation metallurgical condition. An analytical model for iodine SCC has been developed which agrees reasonably well with the test results.

Internal gas pressurization tests with iodine are performed on three tubing lots with different textures at 320 and 390°C. These smooth-bar tests yield data for time-to-failure and strain at failure versus hoop stress. Double-cantilever beam specimens provide crack velocity versus K and KISCC data at 300 to 310°C as a function of the texture ahead of the propagating crack. Smooth-bar threshold stress is strongly texture dependent over the temperature range 320 to 390°C. Basal poles oriented toward the direction of applied stress, such as a tangential tubing texture, result in faster crack propagation, lower KISCC, and a lower smooth-bar threshold stress. Plastic strain is shown to play an important role in crack intiation. The implication of texture and plastic strain effects on iodine SCC susceptibility of irradiated material is considered. Linear elastic fracture mechanics is found to be invalid for the short cracks observed in Zircaloy cladding.
