Book Synopsis Linear Mixed-Effects Models Using R by : Andrzej Gałecki
Download or read book Linear Mixed-Effects Models Using R written by Andrzej Gałecki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear mixed-effects models (LMMs) are an important class of statistical models that can be used to analyze correlated data. Such data are encountered in a variety of fields including biostatistics, public health, psychometrics, educational measurement, and sociology. This book aims to support a wide range of uses for the models by applied researchers in those and other fields by providing state-of-the-art descriptions of the implementation of LMMs in R. To help readers to get familiar with the features of the models and the details of carrying them out in R, the book includes a review of the most important theoretical concepts of the models. The presentation connects theory, software and applications. It is built up incrementally, starting with a summary of the concepts underlying simpler classes of linear models like the classical regression model, and carrying them forward to LMMs. A similar step-by-step approach is used to describe the R tools for LMMs. All the classes of linear models presented in the book are illustrated using real-life data. The book also introduces several novel R tools for LMMs, including new class of variance-covariance structure for random-effects, methods for influence diagnostics and for power calculations. They are included into an R package that should assist the readers in applying these and other methods presented in this text.

Book Synopsis Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish by : European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission. Working Party on Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish
Download or read book Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish written by European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission. Working Party on Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1983 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, prepared by the European Inland Fisheries Research Advisory Commission Working Party on Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish, critically reviews the literature on the occurrence and effects of chromium in fresh water. It lists and discusses the sources of chromium, and its chemistry and analysis in fresh water. The mode of action of chromium and the factors which affect its short- and long-term toxicity to the various life-cycle stages of fish are dealt with in detail. Similar information for plants and invertebrates is considered and evidence for the accumulation of the metal in animals is reviewed. The tentative water-quality criteria proposed distinguish between salmonid and non-salmonid waters but, in order to protect sensitive species of invertebrates, it is recommended that criteria for salmonid waters should be used to cover the majority of waters. The conditions under which more or less stringent standards may be appropriate are indicated. To protect salmonid waters, the mean aqueous concentration of ̀soluble' chromium should not exceed 0.025 mg Cr/l and the 95 percentile should not exceed 0.1 mg Cr/l.
Book Synopsis Water Qual Freshwater Fish by : Gwyneth Howells
Download or read book Water Qual Freshwater Fish written by Gwyneth Howells and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This timely volume brings together recent critical reviews on water quality requirements for freshwater fish commissioned by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission, an agency of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. It provides a unique and authoritative source of critically evaluated water quality data concerning the effects of chromium, nickel, aluminium and nitrite on freshwater fish and includes an assessment of the toxicity of mixtures. The reports presented in this volume cover all stages of the life cycle and relevant trophic levels, including aquatic invertebrates and plants and potential bioaccumulation through the food chain. An extensive bibliography is provided for each chapter as well as a glossary of terms and list of fish species mentioned in the text. This compilation of papers is the definitive reference volume for chemists, biologists, ecologists and toxicologists as well as for water resource managers concerned with management and control of pollution in fresh waters."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on cadmium (Cd) exposure, its effects on human health, the mechanism of Cd accumulation and the development of mitigation technologies. Further, it discusses clinical, epidemiological, agricultural, toxicological, and biochemical aspects of Cd pollution and presents recent biochemical studies on molecular mechanisms of Cd cytotoxicity and cellular transport as well as the mechanism of Cd-induced disturbances in phosphorus (P) metabolism. It also provides insights into the pathophysiology of itai-itai disease, a serious condition caused by Cd pollution. Cadmium -New Aspects in Human Disease, Rice Contamination, and Cytotoxicity- is a valuable resource for scientists involved in heavy metal toxicology, botanical sciences, and regulatory sciences. Addressing the features of Cd pollution in the past and in the present, as well as future perspectives, this is a must-have book for students, researchers and practitioners interested in global and local metal pollution.
