Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental work is presented on the damped free-vibration of delaminated laminates and beams. A laminate theory is developed where the unknown kinematic perturbations induced by a delamination crack are treated as additional degrees of freedom. The generalized stiffness, inertia and damping matrices of the laminate are formulated. An analytical solution is developed for the prediction of natural frequencies, modes and modal damping in composite beams with delamination cracks. Evaluations of the mechanics on various cantilever beams with a central delamination are performed. Experimental results for the modal frequencies and damping of composite beams with a single delamination are also presented and correlations between analytical predictions and measured data are shown. The effects of delamination vary based on crack size, laminate configuration, and mode order. The implications of the mechanics in developing delamination detection techniques are also discussed. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delaminations in laminated composite materials can degrade the compressive strength of these materials. Delaminations can form as a result of impact damage or processing flaws. In order to better understand the effects of these delaminations on the compressive behavior of laminated composite plates, programs have been conducted to assess the criticality of prescribed delaminations of known size, shape, and location on the compression strength of laminated composites. A review of these programs is presented along with highlights of pertinent findings from each. Nettles, Alan T. Marshall Space Flight Center

This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the coefficient of mutal influence, Poisson's ratio and coefficients of thermal and moisture expansion on delamination is studied. Engineering theories are compared to finite element and experimental results. It is shown that the mismatch in coefficients of mutual influence can have a strong influence on delamination with fiber angles in the 10-15 degree range being critical for adjacent layer combinations. The mismatch in coefficient of mutual influence is reduced by a factor of two and the interlaminar shear stress is reduced significantly when the + or - adjacent layers are interspersed between 0 and 90 degree layers. It is shown how the results can be used for design of composite laminates. Herakovich, C. T. Unspecified Center NASA-CR-163956, VPI-E-81-2, PB-81-161747 NAS1-15080; NCC1-15

Book Synopsis Mechanics of Damping for Fiber Composite Laminates Including Hygro-Thermal Effects by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Download or read book Mechanics of Damping for Fiber Composite Laminates Including Hygro-Thermal Effects written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated mechanics theory was developed for the modeling of composite damping from the micromechanics to the laminate level. Simplified, design oriented equations based on hysteretic damping are presented for on-axis plies, off-axis plies, and laminates including the effect of temperature, moisture, and interply hysteretic damping. The temperature rise within vibrating composite laminates resulting from strain energy dissipation is also modeled, and their coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical response is predicted. The method correlates well with reported damping measurements. Application examples illustrate the effect of various ply, laminate, and hygro-thermal parameters on the overall damping performance of composite laminates. Saravanos, D. A. and Chamis, Christos C. Download or read book Free-Edge Delamination written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The width and loading conditions effects on free-edge stress fields in composite laminates are investigated using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. This analysis includes a special free-edge region refinement or superelement with progrssive substructuring (mesh refinement) and finite thickness interply layers. The different loading conditions include in-plane and out-of-plane bending, combined axial tension and in-plane shear, twisting, uniform temperature and uniform moisture. Results obtained indicate that: axial tension causes the smallest magnitude of interlaminar free edge stress compared to other loading conditions; free-edge delamination data obtained from laboratory specimens cannot be scaled to structural components; and composite structural components are not likely to delaminate. Book Synopsis Influence of Prescribed Delaminations on Stiffness-Controlled Behavior of Composite Laminates by : AD. Reddy
Download or read book Influence of Prescribed Delaminations on Stiffness-Controlled Behavior of Composite Laminates written by AD. Reddy and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of delaminations on the stiffness-controlled behavior of laminated composites is investigated. Four panels of [±45,0,90]2s quasi-isotropic layup are fabricated from the T300/Narmco 5208 material system, three with prescribed delaminations of different rectangular shapes and orientations. Nondestructive buckling tests and vibration experiments are conducted on these panels with clamped-free and clamped-simple support boundary conditions to assess the stiffness-controlled behavior. Free-free vibration tests are also conducted to study the influence of delamiantions on higher modes. Finite-element analyses are performed to compare with the experimental results. The findings indicate that delaminations of the size considered can be tolerated for some service conditions without dire consequences.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Delamination in Cross Ply Laminates Initiating from Impact Induced Matrix Cracking by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several two dimensional finite element analyses of (0 sub 2/90 sub 8/0 sub 2) glass/epoxy and graphite-epoxy composite laminates were performed to study some of the characteristics of damage development due to an impact load. A cross section through the thickness of the laminate with fixed ends, and carrying a transverse load in the center was analyzed. Inclined matrix cracks such as those produced by low velocity impact were modeled in the 90 deg ply group. The introduction of the matrix cracks caused large interlaminar tension and shear stresses in the vicinity of both crack tips in the 0/90 and 90/0 interfaces. The large interlaminar stresses at the ends of the matrix cracks indicate that matrix cracking may give rise to delamination. The ratio of mode I to total strain energy release rate at the beginning of delamination calculated at the two matrix crack tips was 60 and 28 pct., respectively, in the glass/epoxy laminate. The corresponding ratio was 97 and 77 pct. in the graphite-epoxy laminate. Thus, a significant mode I component of strain energy release rate may be present at the delamination initiation due to an impact load. Salpekar, S. A.
