The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in PA, fitness, and potential mediators of PA (self-efficacy, decisional balance (DB), and stage of change), measured 18 weeks following completion of a Personal Physical Fitness (PPF) class, and whether a minimal contact follow-up intervention impacted these parameters. College females (n = 100, age = 19.1 ± 1.9 years) were randomly selected from students participating in PPF and reporting being in the action or maintenance stage of change. Subjects were tested at baseline and randomized into two groups; intervention (IG) and control (CG). The IG group received a minimal contact intervention using tailored material via email weekly for a period of 10 weeks. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to compare physical activity in a group of women who received an e-mail prompting intervention (EMP) vs. individuals in a waitlist control group (WLC) following a behavioral weight loss intervention. Twenty seven women participated in a 12-week EMP or WLC condition (age = 42.5 ± 9.1 yrs vs. 42.5 ± 8.8 yrs; BMI = 26.2 ± 2.7 vs. 27.9 ± 3.6 kg/m 2 , respectively). The EMP (n = 13) intervention involved bi-weekly e-mail contact which included a motivational e-mail prompt and weekly exercise log request. Primary outcomes included self-reported physical activity and body weight, assessed 12 and 24 post intervention. The intervention did not result in an increase in physical activity in the EMP compared to WLC group, nor did an increase in physical activity occur from week 12 to 24. No differences in weight change between groups were revealed. Both groups lost additional weight over the 12 week follow-up intervention.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention utilizing individual buddy support to increase physical activity in African American women. The current study was a 10-week, pretest/post-test, quasi-experimental design that was conducted at two churches in Toledo, Ohio. Members of one church served as the intervention group and members of the second church served as the comparison group. The participants were African American women (25 in the comparison group and 28 in the intervention group). Women in the intervention group were required to recruit and enlist the help of a "buddy" that was to provide social support for physical activity. Both groups completed the following data collection measures at pretest and post-test: 1) social support for exercise survey (SSES), 2) rapid assessment of physical activity survey (RAPA), 3) body weight and height, 4) diastolic and systolic blood pressure and, 5) a six-minute walk test. Participants in both groups also received educational information on healthy living, a pedometer to serve as a cue to action for walking, and instructions to record daily pedometer steps and physical activity minutes. The intervention group alone was required to identify a buddy, record the number of minutes per day spent interacting with the buddy, and the type of interaction with the buddy. Seven women dropped out of the comparison group leaving a total of 18 women that completed the study. One participant in the intervention group did not submit physical activity minutes but was included in the analyses for all other measures. The average age of women in the study was 46 years of age (SD = 10). The vast majority of participants (82%) had at least some college education and 76% had households comprised of 2 to 4 persons. About two thirds of participants worked fulltime outside the home. A majority (43%) of participants was married and 38% had gross household incomes greater than $75,000. No statistically significant differences in demographic characteristics were detected between the intervention and comparison groups. According to participants' daily logs at week one and at week ten of the study, physical activity minutes decreased during the study for both groups ( - 49 minutes intervention/-1 minute comparison group). For the intervention group only, the RAPA I score increased in a statistically significant way. By the end of the study, 61% of the intervention group and 44% of the comparison group was in the "active" range on their RAPA I scores. For both groups, there were no statistically significant differences over time in mean social support scores for friend social support. However, in the intervention group, family social support scores increased in a statistically significant way. There was no statistically significant correlation between social support, RAPA I scores, and physical activity minutes. Analysis of the physiologic measures revealed that body mass index statistically significantly decreased over the course of the study for the comparison group only. In contrast, only the intervention group experienced a statistically significantly increase in endurance as measured by the six-minute walk test. There were no statistically significant changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressures for either group. The findings from the current study do not support the effectiveness of the buddy support intervention in increasing self-reported physical activity minutes. However, RAPA I scores, six-minute walk test distance, and family social support scores did improve over time for the intervention group. The lack of statistical power in the current study and the many limitations make it difficult to state any conclusions with confidence.

Book excerpt: Recent research has shown a significant decrease in physical activity (PA) during college, therefore putting students at a higher risk of health complications (Calestine et al., 2017). Gourlan and colleagues (2019) suggested that a two-step intervention that first targets the motivational factors to increase PA intentions and then volitional factors to translate intention to PA behavior may be effective at increasing PA intention and behavior. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of this two-step intervention among college students. It also aimed to integrate a participant's desire to change using the Transtheoretical Model (DiClemente et al., 1991) and measure PA objectively. Sixty-three college students were recruited from a lifetime physical activity walking course and assigned to one of four conditions: motivational intervention only, volitional intervention only, combined motivational plus volitional intervention, or control. Subjective PA and the Theory of Planned Behavior constructs (i.e., attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and intention) were measured at baseline, mid-intervention (week 4), and post-intervention (week 7). There was no significant main effect of condition on intention or PA behavior. A significant main effect of time on intention emerged, revealing a decrease in intention from baseline to post-intervention. The time by condition interaction effect was not significant. Finally, there were no significant differences in intention or PA behavior between participants in the contemplation or preparation stage of the transtheoretical model, compared to those in the precontemplation, action, or maintenance stages. These results suggest that a two-step intervention is unsuccessful at increasing exercise intention and behavior in college students. Limitations of this study include a small sample size and participants meeting PA recommendations at baseline, limiting potential effects of the interventions. Further research investigating the efficacy of the two-step intervention is warranted in a sedentary population.

The suggestions of possible public health actions to tackle these risk factors include the promotion of balanced diets, which are not excessive in energy, and broad education and planning to enable and encourage physical activity during work and leisure.
