Cores were taken from the pavement before and after the treatments to examine the effects of these treatments. Tests were performed to determine the viscosity of the recovered asphalt binders from different layers of the pavement before and after the treatment. Right before coring, the surface texture and skid resistance were measured to assess whether the treatment had adversely affected the frictional properties of the pavement.

Book excerpt: Due to the nature of construction, it is common for longitudinal joints in asphalt pavements to have lower densities and higher permeabilities than the main portions of the pavement lanes. To address this concern, many states employ joint sealant techniques such as fog seals or void reducing asphalt membranes (VRAM). Qualitative evidence in Indiana appears to indicate that longitudinal joint lives have been improved by the use of joint sealers and adhesives, but the specific materials and application rates used to treat longitudinal joints has not been quantitatively investigated. This research aims to specifically investigate the fog seal materials and application rates specified for use on longitudinal joints in Indiana and to compare the performance of fog seal and VRAM treatments in order to provide guidelines for future joint sealant treatments. These objectives were accomplished by employing laboratory testing of both laboratory prepared specimens and field samples.The research performed on the laboratory specimens found the application of fog seals can improve the performance of the longitudinal joints with respect to permeability. While the permeability was affected by the presence of a fog seal treatment, the benefits were irrespective of the specific fog seal material. The results also indicate that the fog seal should be reapplied at 5-7 year intervals.The data from the field samples indicated that the VRAM samples had on average higher air void contents than did the SS-1h fog seal samples. Additionally, the VRAM samples had permeability coefficients that were statistically higher than the SS-1h fog seal samples. These differences may be attributable to the lack of VRAM migration up into the asphalt surface mixture. While the SS-1h fog seal treatment appears to have better performance than the VRAM, the effectiveness of the treatments over time is not known.

Book excerpt: Numerous methods are being employed for asphalt pavement preservation, including rejuvenator emulsions, asphalt emulsion fog seals, and a variety of non-structural surface treatments (including slurry and micro surfacing technologies). To make the most of maintenance budgets, some agencies are using asphalt penetrating sealers as an alternative to reduce the detrimental impact of weathering or aging of wearing surfaces for older and new asphalt pavements or overlays of existing flexible pavements. Applying a penetrating sealer to a new surface within a few weeks after it has been placed has several benefits to the HMA wearing surface. It can restore the original asphalt properties that were lost during the production process and seal the pavement for improving on the durability of the surface course, reducing the permeability at the surface. Asphalt penetrating sealers have been used by Federal, State, county, and municipal agencies over the past 15 years, and their use has been based on past performance. However, there are diverse opinions regarding the success of this technology. Once a product has been used, a pavement engineer's opinion can vary from the project being totally successful or completely ineffective. Little data exists based on quantitative data from multiple projects. The issue or gap in the technology, especially in Ohio, is quantifying the cost-effectiveness on the use of these materials. Thus, the purpose of this project was to collect the data to quantify the cost-effectiveness of these asphalt penetrating sealers. In other words: Are these surface treatments or penetrating sealers cost-effective? The purpose of this report is to document the surface condition of test and control sections along four projects before and immediately after application of three penetrating sealer products, as well as over a four year monitoring period to determine the added service life, if any, between treated and untreated surfaces.

Pavement preservation is critical in maintaining the functional and structural integrity of roads and extending pavement life. Surface treatments can prevent or restore the aging effects by rejuvenating and/or sealing the pavement’s surface, limiting further damage, and restoring its flexibility. This collaborative study of MnDOT, the National Road Research Alliance (NRRA), and Iowa State University investigates the efficacy of fog seal/bio-fog seal topical treatments based on soy-derived rejuvenators, epoxidized soybean oil (SESO), and BioMAG, which contains SESO and the biopolymer poly(acrylated epoxidized high oleic soybean oil) (PAEHOSO). Each topical treatment is applied at three locations in different asphalt binder grades to provide a comprehensive approach to their impacts on the dry time, reflectivity, friction, and permeability of the pavement course. It is observed that the bio-fog seal treatments improve the skid resistance of the pavement, do not affect the reflectivity of pavement markings, and are able to restore the stiffness of the asphalt mixtures. Additionally, the fog seals show fast setting and curing and allows the road to be open to traffic in less than 30 minutes.

Book excerpt: The pavement engineering community has recently been introduced to a number of nontraditional products intended for uses as surface sealers for bituminous pavements. Many new products use agricultural-based components and little is known regarding their effect on bituminous pavement performance. Several nontraditional and “bio-based” fog sealants were applied to bituminous shoulder sections less than two years old. A field evaluation was performed over a three-year period, and included documenting installation, application rates, equipment types, locations, and sampling of the product. Annual field reviews were performed, including tests of pavement marking reflectivity, friction, cracking, appearance, and permeability. Application rates varied from 0.015 to 0.10 gallons per square yard according to the product used. It was found that during the evaluation period, the applications provided various levels of waterproofing, and some test sections experienced less thermal cracking than the control. Nontraditional product applications did not adversely affect the long-term visibility of pavement markings or the overall pavement performance. Laboratory testing of pavement cores showed similar high- and low-temperature performance relative to the control.
