Book excerpt: Developing better employment and management practices for a diverse workplace is quickly becoming a major concern amongst most modern organisations; however, a lack of research into good practices has a limiting effect. Dealing specifically with disabilities, this pioneering work is based on international research spanning several European countries to demonstrate best practice. Aiming to fill a gap in knowledge, the authors offer interdisciplinary insights into managing diversity in the workplace, taking into account various social and cultural contexts. Providing analysis and recommendations for adapting organisational practices to different workplace settings, this Palgrave Pivot is a vital read for scholars of HRM and diversity management, as well as policy-makers and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British survey of employers examined the recruitment and retention of people with disabilities (PWDs). Telephone interviews were conducted with two samples of employers: a random sample of 1,250 and a sample of 250 registered users of the Employment Service's "Disability Symbol," which sets a good practice standard for the employment of PWDs. Findings indicated that more than 90 percent of employers with any disabled employees employed 5 or fewer. The two most common reasons for not having any disabled employees were that none had applied for a job or that a person with disabilities had been employed but had subsequently left. Forty-five percent of the symbol users sampled had a policy specifically addressing the employment of PWDs; only 17 percent of the random sample had a policy. There was a direct relationship between the size of establishment and the existence of written policy. Almost 71 percent of symbol users and 11 percent of the random sample were actively trying to attract applications from persons with disabilities; almost 40 percent of respondents reported difficulty in attracting such applications. People with difficulties in seeing or with mental handicaps/learning difficulties were hardest to employ. The main perceived problem related to the nature of the work. Almost all symbol users were prepared to make costless or minor changes to work environment; 84 percent were willing to pay for necessary adaptations or alterations. Eleven percent of symbol users did not seem aware of its existence. (Appendixes include the sampling design and characteristics, reanalysis of a previous survey, and questionnaire.) (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with intellectual disability often experience challenges in their lives. These may be due to difficulties in social adaptation, but may also be related to a reality of disempowerment whereby they have little role in the decisions central to their lives or in the provision of health, educational and social services. This book argues for alternative and innovative approaches to leadership in intellectual disability service provision. It does this in the light of service scandals including Winterborne View (UK), Oswald D. Heck (USA), Áras Attracta (Ireland) and many others. This book also explores the failed leadership issues underpinning such debacles and then examines how the context for intellectual disability service provision has changed. The authors propose alternative models for service leadership that are contiguous with the changed landscape, emphasizing participatory models of leadership and ending with exemplary vignettes outlining situations where such innovative change is happening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting talent from among the disabled population poses unique challenges, which often are not adequately addressed by potential employers. Although the job market now mostly favors employers, this situation will change due to demographic changes. In Winning the Talent War through Neurodiversity: Getting the Greatest Value from a Traditionally Overlooked Resource, William J. Rothwell and Jonathan D. Zion show how employers can overcome future talent shortages by tapping into the often-overlooked pool of talent comprising people with disabilities (PWDs). Few books examine the human resources processes relating to people with disabilities, and this one provides a range of new insights. Legal issues and the role of recruiting firms are dealt with, and the authors provide a disability recruiting score-card for rating firms' performance. Lastly, advice is offered about avenues for employment for PWDs who aren't suited to working in companies and other organizations. This is a book for anyone involved in developing HR strategies or with responsibility for how human resources are utilized in general, who are interested in improving the methods used to recruit and retain people with disabilities.

Book excerpt: "The population of many nations around the world are becoming increasingly diverse (Stone-Romero, Stone, & Salas, 2003). For example, recent reports estimate that by 2060 the U. S. will become a majority minority nation (i.e., ethnic minorities including African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans will represent the majority of the population) (U. S. Bureau of Census, 2019). As a result, many U. S. and worldwide organizations will employ large number of ethnic minority group members, and will face numerous challenges associated with attracting, motivating, and retaining employees who are culturally diverse. In view of the growing cultural diversity in worldwide organizations, the primary goals of this issue are to (a) advance theory and research on diversity and inclusion in organizations, (b) present new theoretical frameworks to foster future research, and (c) consider a variety of diversity-related issues that have key implications for research and practice. It includes twelve very interesting articles that focus on an array of diversity-related issues including multiculturalism, gender, stereotypes of racial minorities, effect sizes in diversity research, diversity training, LGBT issues, age, and racial harassment, etc. For example, the first article by Dianna Stone, James Dulebohn, and Kimberly Lukaszewski discusses how differences in the cultural values of four U. S. ethnic minority groups (e.g., African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans) will influence HR policies and practices. The second article by George Dreher, Aarti Ramaswami, and Thomas Dougherty focuses on a very important issue, and considers the extent to which a life partner can act as a career catalyst (or inhibitor) and contribute to women's career attainment. The next article by Eugene Stone-Romero, Dianna Stone, Mark Hartman, and Megumi Hosoda examines the stereotypes of six ethnic groups (e.g., African-American, Mexican-American, Native American, etc.). Their results are intriguing and revealed that Anglo-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Native-Americans, and East Indian Americans were viewed most positively whereas African-American and Mexican American were viewed most negatively"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although leadership theories have evolved to reflect changing social contexts, many remain silent on issues of equity, diversity, and social justice. Diversity and Leadership, by Jean Lau Chin and Joseph E. Trimble, offers a new paradigm for examining leadership by bringing together two domains—research on leadership and research on diversity—to challenge existing notions of leadership and move toward a diverse and global view of society and its institutions. This compelling book delivers an approach to leadership that is inclusive, promotes access for diverse leaders, and addresses barriers that narrowly confine our perceptions and expectations of leaders. Redefining leadership as global and diverse, the authors impart new understanding of who our leaders are, the process of communication, exchange between leaders and their members, criteria for selecting, training, and evaluating leaders in the 21st century, and the organizational and societal contexts in which leadership is exercised.
