Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of wing-tip droop on the longitudinal stability characteristics of a 53 and a 63 degree sweptback wing-body combination. Both models were tested with flat and abruptly drooped wing tips. The 63 degree wing was also tested with a curved drooped tip. In addition, the combined effects of wing fences and extended leading-edge flaps were investigated. The results showed that abrupt droop of the outer 40 percent of the basic 53 degree wing improved the stability characteristics of the model. For the 63 degree swept wing, curved droop caused slight beneficial effects on the stability, whereas abrupt droop caused adverse effects. In general, the most favorable stability characteristics were obtained for either flat or abruptly drooped wings with fences and extended leading-edge flaps.

Wiggins and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was performed in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel in order to determine the rolling derivatives for swept-wing-body configurations at angles of attack from 0 degrees to 13 degrees and at high subsonic Mach numbers. The wings had sweep angles of 3.6 degrees, 32.6 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees at the quarter-chord line, an aspect ratio of 4, a taper ratio of 0.6, and an NACA 65A006 airfoil section parallel to the free stream. The results indicate a reduction in the damping-in-roll derivative at the higher test angles of attack. Of the wings tested, instability of the damping-in-roll derivative was experienced over the largest ranges of angle of attack and Mach number for the 32.6 sweptback wing.

Jaquet and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made in the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of ventral fins at two positions (zero and -70 degrees dihedral) on the lateral stability derivatives of a 45 degrees swept high-wing model oscillating in yaw. The effect of the ventral fins on the stability derivatives was determined with and without the vertical and horizontal tails for an angle-of-attack range of zero to 30 degrees at a Mach number of 0.13 and a Reynolds number of 830,000, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord. The steady-state derivatives for a similar model without ventral fins are also presented. No discussion of the data has been made in order to expedite their publication.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of the investigation of wing-alone and wing-fuselage combination employing a delta wing having 45 degree sweepback of the leading edge, aspect ratio 4, and an NACA 65A006 airfoil section. Lift, drag, pitching moment, and root bending moment were obtained for these configurations. In addition, effective downwash angles and dynamic-pressure characteristics in the region of a probable tail location also were obtained for these configurations, and are presented for a range of tail heights at one tail length. In order to expedite publishing of these data, only a brief analysis is included.

Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation at high subsonic speeds has been conducted to determine the effect of fuselage forebody strakes on the static stability and the vertical-tail-load characteristics of an airplane-type configuration having a delta wing. The tests were made at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 0.92 corresponding to Reynolds numbers from 3,000,000 to 4,200,000, based on the wing mean aerodynamic chord, and at angles of attack from approximately -2 to 24 degrees.

Book excerpt: The 7-point method of Weissinger is used to calculate the span loading in roll, lateral center of pressure, and damping in roll for wings having various aspect ratios, sweep angles, and taper ratios. The applicability of the method to the determination of certain other aerodynamic derivatives is investigated, and corrections for the first-order effects of compressibility are indicated.

Tests were made at Mach numbers up to 0.96 at a Reynolds number of 1.5 million and at a Reynolds number up to 8 million at a Mach number of 0.22, both with and without roughness strips near the leading edge of both the upper and lower surfaces of the wing.
