In copolymerisation systems, run in a batch reactor under isothermal conditions, in which the reactivities of the participating monomers differ from each other the composition, molecular weights and the sequence structure of the polymers formed will become functions of the extent of conversion. Since for practical application, it is generally desired to prepare uniform copolymers, controlling the factors influencing copolymer homogeneity is of paramount importance. The overall objective of this work was to establish a mathematical model and a control strategy which would allow the production of a homogeneous copolymer of desired composition in a batch reactor at any level of conversion. The system selected for the study is of commercial and academic interest. Nevertheless, the proposed model and control algorithm is quite general and can be applied to any reacting system for which a kinetic model exists. To achieve the overall objective, the following aims were fulfilled: (i) Mathematical modelling and digital computer simulation of batch copolymerisation over the entire conversion range. (ii) Mathematical modelling and simulation of the proposed control strategy and investigation of the sensitivity and selectivity of the strategy. (iii) Analysis of the experimental results and their comparison with the computer predictions. The work was divided into two parts: i) computer studies and ii) experimental studies of the process. The system selected for these studies was free radical copolymerisation of vinyl acetate and 2 ethylhexyl acrylate initiated by AIBN in ethyl acetate solution Monomer reactivity ratios, (MRR's) were determined using gas chromatography measurements of monomer loss during the reaction. The computer studies indicated that the control was dynamic, stable and effective in maintaining a desired monomer mixture composition throughout the course of reaction. A new method of deriving MRR's from the experimental data in multicomponent copolymerisation. As analytical solution of the multicomponent copolymer.

Book excerpt: Abstract Rate coefficients of propagation, kp, of termination, kt, and of intramolecular transfer-to-polymer, kbb, have been studied via pulsed-laser polymerization (PLP) methods for systems with strong intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, and for polymerizations with two types of distinctly different radicals being present. The propagation kinetics of methacrylic acid (MAA) and N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) in aqueous solution has been investigated by the PLP-SEC technique which combines PLP-initiation with subsequent analysis of the produced polymer by size-exclusion chromatography. The experimental conditions of monomer concentration, temperature, pressure and degree of monomer ionization have been varied in wide ranges. The dependence of kp on monomer-to-polymer conversion has been determined from PLP-SEC experiments with pre-mixed polymer. The variation of kp may be adequately explained by the interaction of solvent and monomer molecules with the transition state structure for propagation. The termination rate coefficients of MAA and NVP have been studied by the SP PLP NIR method in which the change in monomer concentration after single pulse (SP) initiation is monitored via s time-resolved near infrared spectroscopy (NIR). The variations of kt with conversion for different initial monomer concentrations reflect the diffusion-controlled character of the termination step with kt being governed by segmental, translational, and reaction diffusion. In acrylate polymerization backbiting reactions may occur by which chain-end secondary propagating radicals (SPR) are transformed into tertiary midchain radicals (MCR) via 1,5-hydrogen shift. MCRs can react back to SPRs by monomer addition. The basic kinetic scheme has to be extended for additional reactions steps, as SPR and MCR species show widely different kp and kt, respectively. The impact of MCR formation on the applicability of the experimental techniques for kp and kt determination, i.e. PLP-SEC and SP-PLP-NIR, was investigated by PREDICI simulations. A novel experimental method has been developed by which kbb and the rate coefficient for monomer addition to the MCR, kpt, for butyl acrylate (BA) have been determined from PLP-SEC experiments carried out under extended variation of laser pulse repetition rates. Insights into the kinetics, especially of the termination reactivity of secondary and tertiary acrylate radicals, have been obtained by measurements of full electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra under stationary UV and pseudo-stationary PLP initiation, respectively, or by time-resolved monitoring of SPR and MCR concentrations after application of a laser single pulse (SP-PLP-ESR). By the latter technique also chain-length-dependent individual kt values are accessible. For acrylic acid (AA) polymerization in aqueous solution, the complexities associated with strong solvent effects on the rate coefficients and with the pronounced MCR build-up add to each other. Attempts were made to consider the resulting consequences for the kinetic data of AA polymerization in aqueous solution published so far.

Book excerpt: The IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on "Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism" was held in Il Ciocco (Italia) during the week September 3-8, 2006. It was the fourth within the series of so-called SML conferences, which are the major scientific forum for addressing kinetic and mechanistic aspects of free-radical polymerization and of ontrolled radical polymerization. Top international authors like K. Matyjaszewski, T. P. Davis, T. Fukuda and others present their latest research. The five major themes covered were: Fundamentals of Free-Radical Polymerization, Heterogeneous Polymerization, Controlled Radical Polymerization, Polymer Reaction Engineering, and Polymer Characterization. SML IV again marked an important step forward toward the better understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of radical polymerization, which is extremely relevant for both conventional and controlled radical polymerization and for people in academia as well as in industry.

A better understanding of the copolymerization kinetics of these monomers is required in order to ensure uniform distribution of the functional groups among the polymer chains over the course of production. Free radical copolymerization propagation kinetics of styrene (ST) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) have been investigated both in bulk and solution, using pulsed-laser polymerization (PLP) combined with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and proton NMR. All of the solvents examined (n-butanol, toluene and DMF) affect ST/HEMA copolymer composition relative to bulk polymerization, while the effects on propagation rates suggest that hydrogen bonding interactions need to be explicitly considered. Semibatch reactions of ST/HEMA, butyl acrylate (BA)/HEMA and butyl methacrylate (BMA)/HEMA have been carried out in xylene, DMF and 1-pentanol at 110 and 138 °C. The variation in monomer composition for the three solvents agrees with the kinetic studies. It was found that polymer molecular weight is strongly affected by solvent choice and operating conditions, partially due to branching reactions caused by impurities from commercial HEMA monomers. PLP and 13C-NMR analysis indicate that no backbiting occurred during polymerization of HEA, and it is shown that H-bonding disrupts the backbiting mechanism found for other acrylates. Thus, semibatch production in n-butanol can reduce branching and increase molecular weight of BA homopolymers by a factor of five compared to polymerization in xylene.

Book excerpt: There is a large body of Soviet work on emulsion polymerization, spanning a period of over three decades, that has been published primarily in the Russian language. Most of this has remained untranslated into English and hence un available to most other scientists. The value of this book lies primarily in the fact that it brings together the most important of these Soviet contributions, along with comment and analysis by the authors, who may be considered among the foremost authorities in this field in the Soviet Union. But the hundreds of literature citations go far beyond the borders of the Soviet Union and serve as an excellent bibliography of the world literature on emulsion polymerization up to the time this book was written. The book covers both fundamental and applied aspects. In the former are included discussions of particle formation mechanisms, a comprehensive theory of emulsion polymerization, copolymerization of polar monomers, and particle morphology and its implications with regard to derived film properties. Among the applied aspects are discussions of continuous emulsion polymerization, both tubular reactors and continuous stirred tank cascades, and various aspects con cerning the manufacture of some of the most important monomers, such as styrene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, and chloroprene. This book will be an indispensable reference source for scientists who are entering the field as well as those who are experienced and who have wanted a ready access to this large body of literature.
