Book excerpt: Results from shallow-water observational studies have shown acoustic field fluctuations in excess of 10 dB due primarily to non-linear internal solitary waves (ISWs). This work concentrates on three limitations ISWs pose to shallow-water acoustic propagation: anisotropy, quasi-deterministic-stochastic nature, and frequency dependence. These aspects are explored for low frequencies of 75 and 150 Hz through the development of a full-wave three-dimensional parabolic equation model in which a single ISW is introduced and rotated to achieve differing geometries between the ISW and acoustic transmission path. Two acoustic scattering regimes were found to exist: A horizontal refractive regime that generates very intense acoustic energy focusing and shadow zones near the ISW at range when the acoustic transmission path is nearly parallel to the ISW crest, and a vertical mode coupling regime producing moderate to strong acoustic energy focusing and shadow zones for all geometries. These three-dimensional patterns are similar for each frequency, but more intense for 150 Hz. The results dramatically show ISWs focus acoustic energy, dependent upon frequency and geometry, which may be exploitable in both a sonar performance and ambient noise modeling sense.

Acoustic waves and environmental data including on-board ship radar images were collected simultaneously before, during, and after a strong internal solitary wave packet passed through a source-receiver acoustic track. Analysis of the acoustic wave signals shows temporal intensity fluctuations. These fluctuations are affected by the passing internal wave and agrees well with the theory of the horizontal refraction of acoustic wave propagation in shallow water. The intensity focusing and defocusing that occurs in a fixed source-receiver configuration while internal wave packet approaches and passes the acoustic track is addressed in this thesis. ☐ Acoustic ray-mode theory is used to explain the modal evolution of broadband acoustic waves propagating in a shallow water waveguide in the presence of internal waves. Acoustic modal behavior is obtained from the data through modal decomposition algorithms applied to data collected by a vertical line array of hydrophones. ☐ Strong interference patterns are observed in the acoustic data, whose main cause is identified as the horizontal refraction referred to as the horizontal Lloyd mirror effect. To analyze this interference pattern, combined Parabolic Equation model and Vertical-mode horizontal-ray model are utilized. A semi-analytic formula for estimating the horizontal Lloyd mirror effect is developed.

From the results of numerous experiments and numerical modelling in recent years, it is evident that one must account for the geoacoustic properties in more than an ad hoc fashion. Some of the relevant research efforts, particularly those from the ongoing research program at the NOARL, are described in this paper. The results of the NOARL measurements in several geographical areas, coupled with numerical modelling, are used to demonstrate the significance of energy partitioning between waterborne and bottom paths, the role of Scholte interface waves, the efficacy and limitations of selected numerical models, and the significance of ambient noise. Book excerpt: The sea-bed is known to be the controlling factor in low-frequency shallow-water acoustics. In lossy sea-beds waterborne sound is attenuated both the compressional-wave attenuation in the bottom and by the coupling of sound into shear waves. The complicated frequency-dependent effect of the sea-bed on propagation has been studied theoretically, and it is found that bottom loss increases with decreasing frequency down to near the cut-off frequency of the ocean waveguide, at which frequency seismic propagation by interface waves on the sea floor becomes more important than acoustic propagation. It is also found that while propagation losses in the water column are strongly dependent on bottom type, a feature such as the optimum frequency of acoustic propagation in the water column is only slightly dependent on sea-bed properties. Broadband propagation data collected in different areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern North Atlantic are shown to support these theoretical findings. (Author).

The effects of shallow water internal waves on the distribution are studied by numerical simulation. Realizations of time-evolving shallow water internal wave fields are synthesized and acoustic propagation simulated using the parabolic equation method. The waveguide invariant distribution is tracked as the internal wave field evolves in time. Both random background internal waves and more event-like solitary internal waves are considered.

A computer solution of the two-dimensional undamped linearized wave equations is found by using an interlacing explicit-implicit scheme. In the computation, the entire two-dimensional field is found as a function of time. The examples considered involve wave propagation in a homogeneous shallow-water channel where the effect of superposition of discrete spectra produces characteristic modal patterns. The spatial sound pressure fluctuations are represented as plot-density variations along the two-dimensional channel. Examples of discrete propagated modes as well as evanescent modes are presented. The size of the field that can be presented is limited by the size, accuracy, and speed of the computer. The method is programmed in FORTRAN IV for use on the IBM-7040-7044 computer with the S-C 4060 microfilm recorder. (Author).
