Book excerpt: The total amount of settlement that a structure founded on a clay soil undergoes comprises of immediate (or elastic) and consolidation settlements. In the case of clay soils, amount of consolidation settlement (Sc) is more than that of immediate or elastic settlement (Se). Hence, it is important to correctly estimate the amount of consolidation settlement (Sc). The parameters that influence consolidation settlement of a field soil are initial degree of saturation (S%), void ratio (e) of soil prior to excavation, the amount of overburden pressure removed during trench making ( o), or in other words, the amount of rebound caused in the soil giving rise to final void ratio just before construction and the intensity of loading or the applied pressure ( ). This book presents an experimental study on the effect of above parameters on compressibility characteristics of a clay soil. The different steps undertaken in the field for footing construction are simulated in the laboratory and compressibility studied.

Book excerpt: "This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of varying amounts of clay (illite) on the compressibility of a silt as it may be found in nature in a normally consolidated deposition. Laboratory procedure was designed to minimize sample disturbance so as to obtain, as nearly as possible, a virgin consolidation curve. By varying the amounts of silt and clay in a given sample, and sedimenting the sample from a soil-water suspension, consolidation test analyses were used for a comparison of the various samples. Results revealed that between sample mixtures of 40 and 60 percent silt there was a relatively large change in the proportionality of compression index to liquid limit, and that the compression index varied directly with the percent silt present in the sample. A method of predicting settlement characteristics from existing water content, overburden pressure and percent silt was also suggested. Furthermore, it was evident that small changes in silt content had a considerable effect on the consolidation time of silt-clay mixtures"--Synopsis, leaf 1.

Relatively small amounts of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), above a threshold value of about 2 percent by weight, appear to cement the structure of a Nebraska Pierre shale, causing measured ̄?vm-values several times larger than the maximum past overburden stress inferred from geological history. However, CaCO3 contents in excess of this threshold value (even up to 50 percent or more) produce little further increase in ̄?vm. On the other hand, leaching out relatively small amounts of CaCo3 from a highly calcareous clay shale can increase its compressibility and produce a lower measured apparent maximum past pressure.
