Book excerpt: The construction of longitudinal joints in an asphalt pavement is typically the most difficult to achieve high density due to viscosity of pavements at high temperatures. Thus, deterioration of longitudinal joints is one of the major distresses facing agencies. The goal of this Tech Transfer would be to compile research and specifications from the NRRA states and others into a synthesis for publication.

Book excerpt: Longitudinal joint quality control/assurance is essential to the successful performance of asphalt pavements and it has received considerable amount of attention in recent years. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the level of compaction at the longitudinal joint and determine the effect of segregation on the longitudinal joint performance. Five paving projects with the use of traditional butt joint, infrared joint heater, edge restraint by milling and modified butt joint with the hot pinch longitudinal joint construction techniques were selected in this study. For each project, field density and permeability tests were made and cores from the pavement were obtained for in-lab permeability, air void and indirect tensile strength. Asphalt content and gradations were also obtained to determine the joint segregation. In general, this study finds that the minimum required joint density should be around 90.0% of the theoretical maximum density based on the AASHTO T166 method. The restrained-edge by milling and butt joint with the infrared heat treatment construction methods both create the joint density higher than this 90.0% limit. Traditional butt joint exhibits lower density and higher permeability than the criterion. In addition, all of the projects appear to have segregation at the longitudinal joint except for the edge-restraint by milling method.

Book excerpt: The density and air void content of asphalt mixtures affect the durability and performance of asphalt pavements. Pavement longitudinal joints typically have a lower density than the mat because they receive less compaction than the center section of the mat for various reasons. The higher air void percentages resulting from lower densities can lead to high permeability and allow water infiltration, which in turn can cause moisture-induced damage and decrease base and subbase support to the pavement, reducing pavement life. Void-reducing asphalt membrane (VRAM) has been used at the longitudinal joints of asphalt pavements to achieve higher densities and prevent moisture infiltration, thereby reducing deterioration at the longitudinal joints. VRAM is applied before the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) layer is placed and migrates into the HMA to fill 50% to 70% of the air voids. This research evaluated the extent to which J-Band, a VRAM product, increases density and improves performance. Field cores were collected from two sections, one with and one without VRAM. Asphalt mixture performance tests, including disk compact tension and semi-circular bend tests, and push-pull tests were carried out in the laboratory on the field-collected specimens. Volumetric measurements were also taken, and ground penetrating radar was used in the field. It was determined that the pavement sections with VRAM had a lower permeability, higher bond energy, and higher fracture energy than the pavement sections without VRAM.

Book excerpt: It is well-known that longitudinal joint construction quality is critical to flexible pavement life. The maintenance activities caused by longitudinal joint deterioration's direct or indirect effects and raveling problems along the centerline paving joint of asphalt roadways have become challenging for many highway agencies. A poorly constructed joint can lead to premature deterioration of an otherwise sound pavement. Thus, improving the joint’s construction can improve density and decrease permeability. It is probably the single most crucial remedy to enhance pavement performance. A density profiling system (DPS) provides continuous, instead of limited, coverage provided by conventional joint quality evaluation methods. Statistical, probabilistic, and percent-within-limits (PWL) analysis of DPS data suggests avoiding the construction of an unconfined joint. Tapered joints, confined butt joints employing the Maryland method or otherwise, echelon paved, and unconfined butt joints with cut back can produce adequate compaction at the joint.

Achieving uniform density both longitudinally and transversely on the pavement will assist in meeting the goal of high-performance HMA pavements. A variety of techniques have been successfully used to construct good longitudinal joints. The objective of this document is to identify proper techniques for the various procedures, not to recommend a single technique.

Poor-quality joints are characterized by a low density and high permeability; which generates surface distresses such as ravelling or longitudinal cracking. Density has been traditionally considered as the primary performance indicator of joint construction. Density measurements consist of taking cores in the field and determining their density in the laboratory. Although this technique provides the most accurate measure of joint density, it is destructive and time consuming. Nuclear and non-nuclear gauges have been used to evaluate the condition of longitudinal joint non-destructively, but did not show good correlation with core density tests. Consequently, agencies are searching for other non-destructive testing (NDT) options for longitudinal joints evaluation. NDT methods have significantly advanced for the evaluation of pavement structural capacity during the past decade. These methods are based either on deflection or wave velocity measurements. The light weight deflectometer (LWD) is increasingly being used in quality control/quality assurance to provide a rapid determination of the surface modulus. Corresponding backcalculation programs are able to determine the moduli of the different pavement layers; these moduli are input parameters for mechanistic-empirical pavement design. In addition, ultrasonic wave-based methods have been studied for pavement condition evaluation but not developed to the point of practical implementation. The multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) consists of using ultrasonic transducers to measure surface wave velocities in pavements and invert for the moduli of the different layers. In this study, both LWD and MASW were used in the laboratory and in the field to assess the condition of longitudinal joints.

Book excerpt: When placing hot-mix asphalt concrete (HMAC), paving the full width of the pavement in a single pass is usually impossible; therefore, most bituminous pavements contain longitudinal construction joints. These construction joints can often be inferior to the rest of the pavement and can eventually cause an otherwise sound pavement to deteriorate more quickly. The objectives of this project were to (1) assess the density along the longitudinal construction joint of several Texas pavements to determine if a problem exists; (2) document information from the literature; (3) synthesize aviation construction data where a history of a joint density specification exists to determine if such a requirement can be met by paving contractors; and (4) modify current HMAC specifications to require joint density measurements if justification is verified.

Book excerpt: Considering the budget allotted to construct and maintain roadway surfaces, a 5 to 10 % increase in their performance could potentially yield annual savings of billions of dollars. Considering this, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) launched a project to better understand the effect of in-place density on the durability of their hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. In-place density is known to be a crucial factor in HMA performance. The Asphalt Institute in cooperation with the KYTC embarked upon the research and collected numerous HMA samples from five pavement construction sites in Kentucky. An experimental laboratory plan was developed to examine potential improvement in the mixtures' performance if they were compacted to a desired higher density. The laboratory test plan consisted of flow number, flexural beam fatigue, and disk-shaped compact tension tests to evaluate the mixtures' performance with respect to rutting, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature cracking. A statistical analysis of the results was performed to evaluate the effect of density on the durability of each of the pavements. The results showed that the service life of the pavements could improve considerably by achieving a target density of 92 %. The compactibility of the HMA mixtures was also investigated through their compaction characteristic curves by using the Superpave gyratory compactor. Based upon the compactibility analysis, the mixtures could be better compacted in the field by increasing their lift thickness.
