Book excerpt: The receptivity to freestream sound of the laminar boundary layer over a semi-infinite flat plate with an elliptic leading edge is simulated numerically. The incompressible flow past the flat plate is computed by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations in general curvilinear coordinates. A finite-difference method which is second-order accurate in space and time is used. Spatial and temporal developments of the Tollmien-Schlichting wave in the boundary layer, due to small-amplitude time-harmonic oscillations of the freestream velocity that closely simulate a sound wave travelling parallel to the plate, are observed. The effect of leading-edge curvature is studied by varying the aspect ratio of the ellipse. The boundary layer over the flat plate with a sharper leading edge is found to be less receptive. The relative contribution of the discontinuity in curvature at the ellipse-flat-plate juncture to receptivity is investigated by smoothing the juncture with a polynomial. Continuous curvature leads to less receptivity. A new geometry of the leading edge, a modified super ellipse, which provides continuous curvature at the juncture with the flat plate, is used to study the effect of continuous curvature and inherent pressure gradient on receptivity. E. Goldstein describes an asymp totic theory of nonlinear interaction between two spatially growing oblique waves on nonparallel boundary and free-shear layers. The wave interaction originates from the nonlinear critical layer and is responsive to weakly nonparallel effects. The theory results in a sys tem of integral differential equations which appear to be relevant near the upper branch of the neutral curve.

Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent flow and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow are among the most important unsolved problems of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Besides being a fundamental question of fluid mechanics, there are any number of applications for information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent flow. The JUT AM Symposium on Laminar-Turbulent Transition, co-hosted by Arizona State University and the University of Arizona, was held in Sedona, Arizona. Although four previous JUT AM Symposia bear the same appellation (Stuttgart 1979, Novosibirsk 1984, Toulouse 1989, and Sendai 1994) the topics that were emphasized at each were different and reflect the evolving nature of our understanding of the transition process. The major contributions of Stuttgart 1979 centered on nonlinear behavior and later stages of transition in two-dimensional boundary layers. Stability of closed systems was also included with Taylor vortices in different geometries. The topics of Novosibirsk 1984 shifted to resonant wave interactions and secondary instabilities in boundary layers. Pipe- and channel-flow transition were discussed as model problems for the boundary layer. Investigations of free shear layers were presented and a heavy dose of supersonic papers appeared for the first time. The character of Toulouse 1989 was also different in that 3-D boundary layers, numerical simulations, streamwise vortices, and foundation papers on receptivity were presented. Sendai 1994 saw a number of papers on swept wings and 3-D boundary layers. Numerical simulations attacked a broader range of problems.

We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. Book excerpt: Experiments are conducted in the Arizona State University Unsteady Wind Tunnel to investigate acoustic receptivity in the leading-edge region of a Blasius boundary layer. The experiment utilizes two different flat-plate models. One model has a leading edge with a special geometry that limits the receptivity mechanism to the leading edge. The second model is a tapered elliptical-leading-edge flat plate with a junction. A Blasius basic state isolates the instability mechanism to a Tollmien-Schlichting wave and symmetric flow around the leading edge is established for each model. The acoustic disturbances are digitally generated and broadcast into the test section creating sound pressure levels ranging from 90 to 130 dB. Several techniques are examined for separating the Tollmien-Schlichting wave from the background noise. These include hot-wire signal separation in the complex plane, the Kendall differential microphone, a multiple-microphone technique, and a sound burst technique. Receptivity coefficients show the same focusing characteristics of the T-S wave amplitude for a narrow band of frequencies documented in previous experiments. This suggests that the focusing behavior is not due to the special geometry of tl0e leading edge. Boundary-layer measurements indicate some spanwise variation that could contribute to the focusing behavior. The work is now extended to include very high disturbance levels.
