This text covers a variety of supplements, including vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, protein and amino acids, beta-alanine, creatine and guanidinoacetic acid, caffeine and probiotics, as well as emerging ergogenic aids. Information on dosage, ceiling effects and washout periods is discussed, along with safety and legality for different sporting organizations. The book also offers an insight into the efficacy of certain dietary supplements in unique populations, like children and the elderly. Dietary Supplementation in Sport and Exercise is an important resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students on exercise science, health and nutrition courses, as well as strength coaches, athletic trainers, nutritionists and personal trainers, and medical professionals who consult with patients on dietary supplementation.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: There was a decrease in the AL group ( -29%) from baseline in [lamda]3 and the C group was greater (+46%) than the AL group at post measurement demonstrating that the short cross sectional area of the muscle fiber was higher. The most interesting findings in transcript factors were significant group effects for the soleus (p=0.003) for mRNA expression of agtrogin-1 demonstrated by the high expression in the C group above both ad libitum groups. Post hoc revealed that atrogin-1 mRNA expression in the gastrocnemius was higher in the C group (+48%) than the BH group. There were significant group effects for the gastrocnemius (p=0.013), soleus (p=0.0005), and quadriceps (p=0.022) for MuRF1 mRNA expression demonstrating the catabolic groups were elevated above both ad libitum groups. Interestingly, post hoc revealed that MuRF1 expression in the soleus was higher in the C group (+129%) than the CH group. Based on our findings, HMB positively affects body composition (higher LBM and lower FM) and muscle mass (greater triceps mass) under normal conditions. HMB is effective in attenuating loss of strength and muscle under catabolic conditions by attenuating the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Further research needs to be conducted in humans under the same conditions to substantiate these results.

Jaffe and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:The present study was designed to investigate the effects of chronic ingestion of a proprietary beta-alanine supplement on body composition, indices of strength and power performance, and markers of cardiovascular endurance in physically active, college-aged males commissioning within the armed services. Subjects (n = 30) participated in four separate testing sessions, both pre and post assessment consuming either 6.0 g/day beta-alanine or Place bo supplementation for 6 weeks. Parameters evaluated included body fat percentage (BF%), fat free mass (FFM), vertical jump (VJ), 1 repetition maximum back squat (SQ) and bench press(BP), and a repetition maximum bench press (RMBP) at 7S% of the attained maximum, maximal oxygen consumption (V02peak), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), lactate threshold(LT), and peak lactate concentration. For all variables, no significant interactions existed across condition and time (p >.OS). In addition, for all variables, no significant differences existed between conditions (p >.OS). Beta-alanine did not show any benefit for improving body composition or physical performance parameters in this group of individuals.

Book Synopsis The Effects of Greek Yogurt and Exercise on Strength, Muscle Thickness and Body Composition in Untrained, University-Aged Males by : Aaron Bridge
Download or read book The Effects of Greek Yogurt and Exercise on Strength, Muscle Thickness and Body Composition in Untrained, University-Aged Males written by Aaron Bridge and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has shown the effectiveness of milk/whey protein plus exercise on increasing muscle size, optimizing body composition and increasing strength in adult males and females. Greek yogurt (GY) contains similar muscle-supporting nutrients as milk yet it is different in several ways including being a solid food, and it has yet to be investigated in this context. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of GY consumption plus exercise (resistance and plyometric) training on strength, muscle thickness and body composition. Thirty untrained, university-aged (18-25 years) males were randomized to 2 groups (fat-free, plain GY; n= 15, or a Placebo Pudding [PP; isoenergetic carbohydrate-based pudding]; n= 15) and underwent a combined resistance/plyometric training program 3d/week for 12 weeks. They consumed either GY (20 g protein per serving) or PP (0 g protein per serving) daily (GY: 3x200 g on training days and 2x150 g on non-training days; spread throughout the day). After 12 weeks, both groups significantly increased strength, muscle thickness and fat-free mass from baseline (p
