Book Synopsis Petition Writing and Negotiations of Colonialism in Igboland, 1892–1960 by : Bright Alozie
Download or read book Petition Writing and Negotiations of Colonialism in Igboland, 1892–1960 written by Bright Alozie and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though many historians of colonial Africa are familiar with petitions preserved in archives, few have looked at what this genre of letter writing tells us about broader colonial society. In a rigorously researched and compelling narrative, Petition Writing and Negotiations of Colonialism in Igboland, 1892–1960: African Voices in Ink fills this gap through the exploration of petitions written by Igbo petitioners in southeastern Nigeria to British officials which shows how these Igbo individuals influenced colonial decision-making. In challenging colonial authority through petition writing, Igbo petitioners used language of rights and justice to navigate the colonial system. Utilizing a largely untapped archive of colonial petitions, Bright Alozie provides insights into petition writing as a significant tool for understanding colonialism beyond the contestation of power and highlights petition writers’ agency and engagement with colonial administration. This book integrates transnational, historical, geographical, and gender perspectives, capturing the profound complexities inherent in colonial governance and encouraging critical investigations into the nuanced dynamics of petition writing in colonial Africa. By extracting African voices from these petitions, Alozie evokes their richness and relevance to understand their colonial past and demonstrate the potential of re-evaluating familiar archival sources with innovative approaches and fresh eyes.

Book Synopsis Modes of British Imperial Control of Africa by : Onek C. Adyanga
Download or read book Modes of British Imperial Control of Africa written by Onek C. Adyanga and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Great Britain, as a colonial power in Africa, organized and exercised control at the international and domestic level to advance British interests in Uganda and beyond. While this book is by no means an exhaustive study of the various modes of control that took hold in Uganda since its inception as a territorial state up to the period of juridical independence, it is hoped that its historiographical contributions to the post-colonial dispensation of Uganda will be threefold. First, it systematically sheds light on the combined influence of racist ideology, class, and politics in perpetuating informal imperial control in Uganda. Second, it demonstrates that consolidating informal imperial control has required externalizing the legitimacy of the Ugandan state. This suggests that African leaders not supported by external powers may be externally delegitimized and their position made untenable. Third, it demonstrates that the informal control imposed upon Africans by external powers, by removing incentives for internal legitimacy, encouraged violations of human rights as African leaders did not need to obtain the consent of their own people in order to remain in power. Furthermore, it advances the argument that democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights can be achieved in Africa if leaders enjoy internal legitimacy derived from the people. The various modes of control imposed by former masters over colonial and post-colonial states were not meant to protect African, but imperial interests.

Book excerpt: In With Eyes and Ears Open: The Role of Visitors in the Society of Jesus, twelve historians examine important visitations in the history of the Society. After a thorough investigation of the nature and role of the “visitor” in Jesuit rules and regulations, ten visitations of missions and provinces—from Peru in the sixteenth century, to Ireland in the seventeenth, to the Zambesi mission and Australia in the twentieth—are considered. Visitors, appointed by the superior general in Rome, surveyed the situation for fidelity to the Jesuit way of life, resolved any problems, and recommended future paths, often to the disapproval of Jesuit hosts. One contribution concerns the canonical visitation of the non-Jesuit Francis Saldanha da Gama in 1758, which resulted in the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal in 1759.

Download or read book Pan-Africanism and Education written by Kenneth J. King and published by Diasporic Africa Press. This book was released on 2017-08-12 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an analysis of the complex links between Black America and Africa in the period of 1880 to 1945. It examines an extended white attempt to pattern politics and education in colonial Africa upon the example of the U.S. South. This export of United States race relations to Africa was resisted by Black intellectuals in the United States and many of the early nationalists in Africa. At another level, the study offers an original account of the parallel and related development of the education systems of the U.S. South and Kenya, revealing in both spheres the essentially political nature of African and Black American education. Through extensive research in Black colleges, philanthropic foundations, and Christian missions, a wealth of new material has been collated also on early pan-African politicians, Black missionaries to Africa, and African students in the United States.
