Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of papers emphasizing applications of mathematical models and methods to real-world problems of relevance for industry, life science, environment, finance and so on. The biannual Conference of ECMI (the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry) held in 2014 focused on various aspects of industrial and applied mathematics. The five main topics addressed at the conference were mathematical models in life science, material science and semiconductors, mathematical methods in the environment, design automation and industrial applications, and computational finance. Several other topics have been treated, such as, among others, optimization and inverse problems, education, numerical methods for stiff pdes, model reduction, imaging processing, multi physics simulation, mathematical models in textile industry. The conference, which brought together applied mathematicians and experts from industry, provided a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, problems and methodologies, bridging the gap between mathematics and industry and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. The conference has included a presentation of EU-Maths-In (European Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation), a recent joint initiative of ECMI and EMS. The proceedings from this conference represent a snapshot of the current activity in industrial mathematics in Europe, and are highly relevant to anybody interested in the latest applications of mathematics to industrial problems.

Using the classification system defined in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation H2020, several of the topics covered belong to the challenge climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials; and some to health, demographic change and wellbeing; while others belong to Europe in a changing world – inclusive, innovative and reflective societies. The 19th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, ECMI2016, was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in June 2016. The proceedings of this conference include the plenary lectures, ECMI awards and special lectures, mini-symposia (including the description of each mini-symposium) and contributed talks. The ECMI conferences are organized by the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry with the aim of promoting interaction between academy and industry, leading to innovation in both fields and providing unique opportunities to discuss the latest ideas, problems and methodologies, and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. They also encourage industrial sectors to propose challenging problems where mathematicians can provide insights and fresh perspectives. Lastly, the ECMI conferences are one of the main forums in which significant advances in industrial mathematics are presented, bringing together prominent figures from business, science and academia to promote the use of innovative mathematics in industry.

This book covers the basic concepts of computational low-frequency electromagnetics in an application-based format and hones the knowledge of these concepts with hands-on MATLAB® modules. The book is divided into five parts. Part 1 discusses low-frequency electromagnetics, basic theory of triangular surface mesh generation, and computational human phantoms. Part 2 covers electrostatics of conductors and dielectrics, and direct current flow. Linear magnetostatics is analyzed in Part 3. Part 4 examines theory and applications of eddy currents. Finally, Part 5 evaluates nonlinear electrostatics. Application examples included in this book cover all major subjects of low-frequency electromagnetic theory. In addition, this book includes complete or summarized analytical solutions to a large number of quasi-static electromagnetic problems. Each Chapter concludes with a summary of the corresponding MATLAB® modules. Combines fundamental electromagnetic theory and application-oriented computation algorithms in the form of stand alone MATLAB® modules Makes use of the three-dimensional Method of Moments (MoM) for static and quasistatic electromagnetic problems Contains a detailed full-body computational human phantom from the Visible Human Project® Female, embedded implant models, and a collection of homogeneous human shells Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Modeling for Electrical and Biological Systems Using MATLAB® is a resource for electrical and biomedical engineering students and practicing researchers, engineers, and medical doctors working on low-frequency modeling and bioelectromagnetic applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a theoretical discussion of pulse width modulation (PWM) in power electronic inverters. Pulse width modulation is widely used for the frequency control of speed of ac motors, the design of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) as well as the integration of renewable energy sources into existing power grid systems. PWM technique is based on approximation of sinusoidal waveforms by sequences (trains) of rectangular pulses whose widths are properly modulated. This width-modulation results in the suppression of low order harmonics at the expense of amplification of high order harmonics which are suppressed by energy-storage elements in load circuits. The discussion covers various PWM techniques with a focus on the optimal time-domain PWM techniques proposed by the authors.

Book excerpt: This volume (Parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quan?itative Nondestructive Evalua tion held at the University of California (San Diego) in LaJo11a, August 3-8, 1986. The Review was organized and sponsored by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory, in cooperation with the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, and the Materia1s Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Approximately 400 attendees, a new record, representing various government agencies, industry, and universities participated in the technical presentations, poster sessions, and discussions. This Review, with its wide-ranging interchange of technical information, stands as one of the most compre hensive in the field of NDE research and engineering. In order to present the reader with a more usefu1 document, we have organized the symposium papers in these Proceedings by subject rather than by the order of presentation at the Review. Topical subject headings have been selected under which the 1arge majority of papers wou1d reasonably falI. Here, again, we have revised the format used in former years to accommodate an evolving focus of interest in the field. These categories cover a broad spectrum of research in NDE and encompass activities from fundamental work to early engineering applications. In the following paragraphs we offer a brief summary of the research presented in these Proceedings.
