More efficient poultry production explains at least part of this shift. Broilers have replaced farm flocks of chickens as the main component of chicken meat marketings, because of (a) rapid increases in broiler production, (b) fewer hens required for a given volume of egg production with the higher rate of lay per bird, and (c) the increased use of sexed chicks, which has reduced greatly the number of cockerels raised by egg producers in replacement flocks.
