This book was released on 1983 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to assess the role of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the food production systems of developing countries, examine their advantages and disadvantages, analyze the constraints limiting their further contribution to the welfare of small farm/low income rural producers, prescribe measures for overcoming these constraints, and make recommendations related to potential donor involvement in support of the development of sheep and goat production. Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research sought to determine the total production range within which small ruminants are produced by smallholders in the sertao of Ceara. It was found that prevailing rainfall conditions were very important in determining the relative importance of crop and livestock production. Within the sector of livestock production, production strategies varied according to the size of the production unit. Goats were highly desired but very seldom produced by the smallest producers. The production calculus of small producers changes both as a function of size and rainfall. In order to survive, small producers must engage in a broad range of production so that they can shift their production emphasis in accordance to prevailing conditions. The loss of such a flexibility jeopardizes their long term viability. The central conclusion of the research is that it is both unlikely and undesirable that the small producer of the sertao of Ceara increase significantly his production of small ruminants.
