Book excerpt: Published in Cooperation with THE WORLD AQUACULTURE SOCIETY Shrimp is the most important commodity, by value, in the international seafood trade. The shrimp industry has grown exponentially in the last decades, and growth is expected to continue for years to come. For future success in the shrimp industry, shrimp farmers and aquaculture scientists will find a thorough knowledge of the economics, market, and trade as important as an understanding of disease management or husbandry. Shrimp Culture: Economics, Market, and Trade brings together recent findings of researchers from around the world working in various aspects of the economics of shrimp farming. This volume covers all major aspects of the economics, trade, and markets for shrimp worldwide, with chapters written by experts from major consuming countries such as the U.S.A. and major providers such as China, Thailand and Brazil. The book has been carefully edited by PingSun Leung and Carole Engle, both well known and respected internationally for their work in this area. Shrimp Culture is an essential purchase for everyone involved in this massive industry across the globe.

Book excerpt: Problems of climate change, biodiversity and air pollution are clearly growing globally, but more particularly in Asia because of its economic importance and richness in nature. The increasing interest in environmental and resource economics applied in regions of Asia will make this book an outstanding resource to the existing literature, particularly in the fields of environmental and resource economics and the integration of applied content in traditional and agricultural development. At present there is no single handbook or text on the state of current knowledge in environmental economics in Asia or one which offers a comprehensive guide to students and academics on the subjects of environmental economics research. This book will help to fill the gap in the existing literature.

Book excerpt: East, South and Southeast Asia are home to two-thirds of the world’s hungry people, but they produce more than three-quarters of the world’s fish and nearly half of other foods. Through integration into the world food system, these Asian fisheries export their most nutritious foods and import less healthy substitutes. Worldwide, their exports sell cheap because women, the hungriest Asians, provide unpaid subsidies to production processes. In the 21st century, Asian peasants produce more than 60 percent of the regional food supply, but their survival is threatened by hunger, public depeasantization policies, climate change, land grabbing, urbanization and debt bondage. *Where Shrimp Eat Better than People: Globalized Fisheries, Nutritional Unequal Exchange and Asian Hunger is now available in paperback for individual customers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India, shrimp farming has gathered its momentum in the early 1990s, and the country has earned huge foreign exchange by exporting shrimp. It is one of the important sources of income for the rural population, particularly those who live in the coastal region. But, shrimp farming is volatile in nature. It can give a huge profit and at the same time it can also ruin a farmer. Previously, only rich farmers dared to do shrimp farming. But now, allured by profit, marginal and poor farmers also started doing shrimp farming. As this farming requires huge investment, the success rate among the poor farmers is very low. It also has an adverse impact on the environment. The book has eight chapters. The first chapter deals with the introduction, problem, global shrimp production, shrimp production in India, significance, objectives, methodology and limitations of the study. In the second chapter a review of the existing studies on shrimp farming and its impact on economy, society and environment is presented. Socio-economic profile of the shrimp farmers is discussed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter discusses the shrimp farm management and marketing. The fifth chapter analyses the socio-economic impact of shrimp farming. The sixth chapter highlights the environmental problems due to shrimp farming. An evaluation of the existing policies related to shrimp farming is made in the seventh chapter. The last chapter presents the major findings for a sustainable, economically more viable and environment friendly shrimp farming. The book is very useful for the pisciculture students, academicians, policy makers, fish farmers, fish traders & exporters and other stakeholders; and will help shaping public policy for economically viable and environmentally sustainable shrimp farming in the future.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Penaeus vannamei and P. stylirostris are introduced species in Asia and the Pacific. They have now become important commercial shrimp species in many countries in Asia. The main reason behind the importation of P. vannamei to Asia has been the perceived poor performance, slow growth rate and disease susceptibility of the major indigenous cultured shrimp species, P. chinensis in China and P. monodon virtually everywhere else. However, for many reasons, particularly with the evidence of the introduction of exotic viruses to the region, there has been caution on the part of many Asian governments for the introduction of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris. Nevertheless, this caution has not been demonstrated by the private sector, which has been bringing stocks of illegal and often disease carrying P. vannamei into Asia from many locations, as well as moving infected stocks within Asia. The commercial success of these introductions, despite disease problems, has allowed the development of substantial culture industries for these alien penaeids within Asia, particularly in China and Thailand. One effect of this is that it is rapidly becoming difficult to control the importation and development of this new industry. This report attempts to gather all of the currently available data on the extent of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris importation and culture in Asia, its potential problems and benefits, and in this way to serve as a source document from which to investigate further means by which control over this issue might be re-established. Recommendations aimed at controlling the importation, testing and culture of these species have been made for all levels and are included in this report.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The decades-old destruction of mangroves due in large part to shrimp aquaculture has put the local ecosystems in peril and the people involved in the production phase at enormous risk. Products that have undergone third-party certification can be procured by retailers supplying shrimp to promote superior aquaculture practices in order to mitigate this devastating economic engine. This thesis was designed as an analysis of shrimp products available at all retailers in Hartford County, Connecticut to evaluate market penetration of certified products. Site visits allowed for quantifiable measurement of the extent of customer access to the certified goods. It was during the data collection phase that the issue of how a certified product could be so affordable that called into question whether the third parties themselves should, too, be evaluated. The four-year delay in completing this thesis write-up has provided an opportunity to evaluate changes in the market, as well as consumer and media attention into the provenance of the shrimp we consume and the question of how it came to market. It would appear that the timing of this topic was ideal as there has been an increase recently in a variety of news sources reporting on the problem of shrimp production. Some of the attention is typically anthropocentric and driven by the alarm of the quality of the shrimp that we are consuming and less guided by a need to look at the devastation on the lives and on the environments that source the commodity. Nevertheless, much has written about the slave labor involved in the chain of custody in bringing the products to market. Third party certifiers are one of the best points of intervention, but who is policing the police? While it has become clear that scrutiny of the third party certifiers is paramount, this thesis demonstrates that this is only one point of intervention, and a concerted effort from a host of actors along the entire chain of custody, including the endpoint--that of the consumer--will need to be implemented if this problem is ever to be truly quelled.
