Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Advertising, 1916, Vol. 9: A Monthly Magazine for Canadian Advertisers Silent salesmanship - advertising - will play a more prominent part in the big successes of 1916 than ever before. Forcible silent salesmanship, which is advertising in newspapers, backed up by equally forcible personal salesman ship, will determine the varying degree of success aspired to by manufacturers in the coming year. Concerns that have products which the people want at a fair price will have a banner year between now and the beginning of 1917. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its origins in the Victorian era as a marginal and somewhat shady enterprise, the advertising trade in Canada changed radically after the turn of the century - rising quickly to a position of influence and respectability. In this book, Russell Johnston tells the story of the people who made it so. Johnston's setting is the dynamic intersection of business and culture during the early decades of the twentieth century. During this period, he argues, magazines and newspapers grew increasingly dependent on sales of advertising space, and this precipitated a widespread restructuring of the publishing industry. Ultimately, this affected the range and content of Canadian periodicals, setting the parameters for a newly invigorated, though still fragile, Canadian magazine industry. Johnston charts this process by exploring the lives, goals and ideas of a new breed of solicitor, the ad agent, and shows how agencies began to draw on the disciplines of psychology and economics to promote their products, thus initiating the modern market research industry. The only thorough analysis of the forces shaping advertising in Canada prior to 1930, this study documents the emergence in Canada of a key component of the modern culture of consumption.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Advertising Book, 1916 The chief purpose of "The First Advertising Book" - 1916 - is to put into form for convenient reference some of the available records of recent progress in advertising methods. This is done with two separate objects in view. One object is to give to such persons as may be interested in advertising (but who are not familiar with its inner workings in its modern forms) a clear idea of what is being done from within to make more effective this part of the present-day selling mechanism. The other, and the more important object, is to help those who are actively engaged in selling operations to acquire a working familiarity with some of the events forming current advertising history. To such persons, the records of these events may have suggestive value in connection with efforts to reduce waste in the processes of distributing merchandise. In the conclusion of "Advertising as a Business Force," a similar compilation made for the Associated Clubs in 1912-13, 1 called attention to three lines in which it seemed to me advertising was making distinct progress: 1. Immediate contact with selling. 2. Accurate knowledge as a basis for action, and 3. Exacting standards of honor. This new compilation of some articles which have appeared during the past two years serves to show clearly that the progress being made in each of these lines -as well as in others - is of a substantial character. The present volume may be said to have been built around the following sentence at the close of "Advertising as a Business Force": "It does not require the gift of prophecy, then, to foresee the very imminent coming of the time when the very highest possible standards of honor in advertising appeal will not merely be 'good business' but will be absolutely essential to any advertising appeal which can be expected to have any real effect." Book excerpt: Can a book about tax history be a page-turner? You wouldn’t think so. But Give and Take is full of surprises. A Canadian millionaire who embraced the new federal income tax in 1917. A socialist hero, J.S. Woodsworth, who deplored the burden of big government. Most surprising of all, Give and Take reveals that taxes deliver something more than armies and schools. They build democracy. Tillotson launches her story with the 1917 war income tax, takes us through the tumultuous tax fights of the interwar years, proceeds to the remaking of income taxation in the 1940s and onwards, and finishes by offering a fresh angle on the fierce conflicts surrounding tax reform in the 1960s. Taxes show us the power of the state, and Canadians often resisted that power, disproving the myth that we have always been good loyalists. But Give and Take is neither a simple tale of tax rebels nor a tirade against the taxman. Tillotson argues that Canadians also made real contributions to democracy when they taxed wisely and paid willingly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years preceding the First World War, cinema rapidly developed from a fairground curiosity into a major industry and social institution, a source of information and entertainment for millions of people. Only recently have film scholars and historians begun to study these early years of cinema in their own right and not simply as first steps towards the classical narrative cinema we now associate with Hollywood. The essays in this collection trace the fascinating history of how the cinema developed its forms of storytelling and representation and how it evolved into a complex industry with Hollywood rapidly acquiring a dominant role. These issues can be seen to arise from new readings of the so-called pioneers - Melies, Lumiere, Porter, and Griffith - while also suggesting new perspectives on major European filmmakers of the 1910s and 20s. Editor Thomas Elsaesser complements the contributions from leading British, American, and European scholars with introductory essays of his own that provide a comprehensive overview of the field. The volume is the most authoritative survey to date of a key area of contemporary film research, invaluable to historians as well as to students of cinema.
