This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Impacts of Toxic Chemicals presents a comprehensive, yet readable account of the known disturbances caused by all kinds of toxic chemicals on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Topics cover the sources of toxicants, their fate and distribution through the planet, their impacts on specific ecosystems, and their remediation by natural systems. Each chapter is written by well-known specialists in those areas, for the general public, students, and even scientists from outside this field. The book intends to raise awareness of the dangers of chemical pollution in a world dominated by industry and globalization of resources. Because the problems are widespread and far reaching, it is hoped that confronting the facts may prompt better management practices at industrial, agricultural and all levels of management, from local to governmental, so as to reduce the negative impacts of chemical contaminants on our planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature review of freshwater model ecosystem studies with insecticides was performed to assess the NOECecosystem for individual compounds, to compare these threshold levels with water quality standards, and to evaluate the ecological consequences of exceeding these standards. Studies were judged appropriate for this purpose if the test systems simulated a realistic freshwater community, if the experimental design was generally sound (ANOVA or regression design; exposure concentrations described), and if published not earlier than 1980. Most studies dealt with organophosphates (predominantly single applications) and synthetic pyrethroids (mostly repeated applications) in standing waters. Structural endpoints were more sensitive than functional ones. The most sensitive taxa were representatives of the crustaceans, insects and fish. Most studies tested relatively high concentrations, with even lowest concentrations showing effects. An NOECeco could therefore be established for a limited number of compounds only. Based on toxic units, safe threshold values were more or less the same for compounds with a similar mode of action. This also accounted for the nature and magnitude of direct effects at higher concentrations. Usually, indirect effects were reported at higher concentrations than those for direct effects. Although laboratory single species toxicity tests may not allow predictions on (exact) ecological effects, some generalizations on direct effects and recovery can be made with respect to the acute EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species. Safe concentrations, as set for water quality standards, appear to be protective. Depending on exposure regime, the NOECeco is generally in the range of (0.1-0.01) x EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species. Recovery of sensitive endpoints usually takes place within two months after the last application when peak concentrations stay lower than (0.1-1) x EC50 of the most sensitive standard test species.

This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain types of pesticides are widely used in agriculture in all parts of the world due to their relatively low cost, broad spectrum of activity, and high efficiency. These pollutants contaminate not only the surrounding soils and water but, in many cases, also enter into the drinking water. The Handbook of Research on the Adverse Effects of Pesticide Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of the prevention of accumulation of toxic pollutants such as agrochemicals and organochlorine pesticides in aquatic ecosystems and applications within ecology and agriculture. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as pesticide monitoring, metabolites, and risk assessment, this book is ideally designed for scientists, researchers, engineers, policymakers, agricultural specialists, industrialists, academicians, and students seeking current research on the risks of water contaminants in small ecosystems.

Download or read book PERPEST Version 1.0, Manual and Technical Description written by Egbert Hendrik Nes and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a technical description and a user-manual of the PERPEST model, able to Predicts the Ecological Risks of PESTicides in freshwater ecosystems. This system predicts the effects of a particular concentration of a pesticide on various (community) endpoints, based on empirical data extracted from the literature. The method that it uses solves new problems (e.g., what is the effect of pesticide A?) by using past experience (e.g., published microcosm experiments). The database containing the “past experience” has been constructed by performing a review of freshwater model ecosystem studies evaluating the effects of pesticides. The PERPEST model searches for situations in the database which resemble the question case, based on relevant (toxicity) characteristics of the compound. The model is described in the scientific paper written by Van den Brink et al. (2002) and available via the enclosed CD-ROM and the website www.perpest.alterra.nl
Book Synopsis Pesticides in Aquatic Environments by : Mohammad Khan
Download or read book Pesticides in Aquatic Environments written by Mohammad Khan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water covers about two-thirds of the surface of earth, but only 0.627 percent of this water is the sweet surface and subsurface water available for the survival of freshwater organisms including man (1,2). Some of this fresh or sweet water lies in practically uninhabitable regions (rivers: }1ackenzie in Canada; Amazon in Central America; Ob, Yenesey, and Lenta in Siberia, etc.). Also, most of the major rivers (the Mississippi in U.S.A., the Rhine in Europe, the Volga in U.S.S.R., the Ganges in India, etc.), because they flow through agricultural land or urban and industrial areas, have become highly contaminated with chemicals (3). This leaves us with shrinking resources of sweet surface water. In the United States, the dependable supplies of this water are already dwindling in cities like New York and Los Angeles and states like New Mexico and Texas (3).

It is an authoritative and comprehensive summary of knowledge about freshwater field tests, with particular emphasis on their optimization for scientific and regulatory purposes. This valuable reference covers both lotic and lentic outdoor systems and addresses the choice of endpoints and test methodology. Instructive case histories show how to extrapolate test results to the real world.
