Download or read book Ecological imperialism (pocket) written by Alfred W. Crosby and published by . This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Socio-Environmental Regimes and Local Visions by : Minerva Arce Ibarra
Download or read book Socio-Environmental Regimes and Local Visions written by Minerva Arce Ibarra and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents oral histories, collective dialogues, and analyses of rural and indigenous livelihoods facing global socio-environmental regime change in Latin America (LA). Since the late twentieth century, rural and indigenous producers in LA, including agriculturists, coffee-growers, as well as small-scale farmers/fishers, and others, have had to resist, cope with, or adapt to a range of neoliberal socio-environmental regimes that impact their territories and associated resources, including water, production systems and ultimately their cultural traditions. In response, rural producers are using local visions and innovation niches to decide what, when, and how to resist, cope with uncertainty, and still be successful in using their customary laws to retain their land rights and livelihoods. This book presents a range of ethnically diverse case studies from LA, which addresses socio-environmental, educational, and law regimes’ effects using transdisciplinary research approaches in rural, traditional and indigenous production systems. Based on both, the results and insights gained into how producers are resisting and adapting to these regimes, as well as decades of research carried out in LA rural territories by the participating authors, the book puts forward a baseline for devising new public policies that are better suited to the real challenges of livelihoods, poverty, and environmental degradation in LA. These recommendations are rooted in post-development thinking; they promote territorial public policy with social inclusion and a human’s rights approach. The book draws on over 20 years of research carried out by LA’s academics and their undergraduate and graduate students who have addressed collaborative work, participatory research, and transdisciplinary approaches with rural commons and communities in LA. It features 19 case studies, with contributions from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, and Mexico.
Book Synopsis Ecological Imperialism by : Alfred W. Crosby
Download or read book Ecological Imperialism written by Alfred W. Crosby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People of European descent form the bulk of the population in most of the temperate zones of the world - North America, Australia and New Zealand. The military successes of European imperialism are easy to explain; in many cases they were a matter of firearms against spears. But as Alfred W. Crosby maintains in this highly original and fascinating book, the Europeans' displacement and replacement of the native peoples in the temperate zones was more a matter of biology than of military conquest. European organisms had certain decisive advantages over their New World and Australian counterparts. The spread of European disease, flora and fauna went hand in hand with the growth of populations. Consequently, these imperialists became proprietors of the most important agricultural lands in the world. In the second edition, Crosby revisits his now classic work and again evaluates the global historical importance of European ecological expansion.

Book excerpt: "This collection explores the networks that shaped ecological change within and between European and Middle Eastern empires during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and is divided into three parts. The first focuses on the role of nation-building in trans-imperial ecological transfers; the second focuses on approaches from the history of science, looking at the global transfer, circulation, and diffusion of ideas about the environment; and the third employs methods from animal studies, challenging anthropocentric views of environmental history"--

Book Synopsis Brazilian Geography by : Rubén C. Lois González
Download or read book Brazilian Geography written by Rubén C. Lois González and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the history and theoretical contributions of Brazilian geography since the late twentieth century and shows how this sphere of knowledge has been organically integrated with social and territorial issues and with social movements. The relationship between the subjects and objects of research in Brazilian geography has been centred on the understanding and transformation of realities marked by injustice and inequality. Against this backdrop, the geography of the country has developed by integrating, relating to, and forming part of those realities as it headed out into the streets. Brazilian geography continues to hold theoretical debate in high regard as a result of the influence of critical theory. This book thus covers the theoretical approaches in Brazilian geography, its different lines of research, and above all its character as manifested in culture and society.

Book Synopsis Colonial Heritage, Power, and Contestation by : Camila Andrea Malig Jedlicki
Download or read book Colonial Heritage, Power, and Contestation written by Camila Andrea Malig Jedlicki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent debates about the return of colonially looted heritage have furthered the discussions on decolonisation around the world, and have reignited questions surrounding “what is, and who owns, cultural heritage”. These discourses in the meaning, production and management of heritage – with a growing presence of themes that address “Latinities” – have gained greater visibility in Latin America and the Caribbean, as challenges surrounding cultural heritage arise more prominently worldwide. The attention on this region aims to contextualise the various theoretical, empirical, and critical perspectives in relation to the negotiation of decolonisation. Hence, this book focuses on the analysis of diverse modes of confronting the power underlying colonial heritage that can contribute to pushing boundaries and persuading changes in pre-established definitions of political thought and local identities. To this end, the chapters in this book focus on a wide scope of topics, ranging from the repatriation and restitution of cultural heritage, and diasporic movements to decolonial practices around monuments, museums, and education. In so doing, this volume challenges stereotypes that made Latin America and the Caribbean a space of mere reproducibility of external ideas, and instead provides a space to show current decolonial perspectives and practices developed in the region that will enrich the international debate on the contestation of colonial legacies and decolonisation of cultural heritage.
