Jeff "Del" DelGuidice was proud of his assignment to the research submarine The Unicorn. But his mission had barely begun when the vessel was sucked into a mysterious underseas void where time stood still, before propelling it forward, through the centuries. The crew surfaced in a strange, magical world changed forever by nuclear holocaust. Here a race of angelic beings had taken pity on the remnants of humankind, offering a chosen few a precious second chance. For a sinister expert of the mystical arts had embraced the forbidden third magic, the most deadly sorcery of all. Only Del could defeat it--a hero sworn to peace and fated to wield the dazzling power of the fourth magic. . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the intellectual fountainhead of the ideology of Hindutva, which is in political ascendancy in India today, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is undoubtedly one of the most contentious political thinkers and leaders of the twentieth century. Accounts of his eventful and stormy life have oscillated from eulogizing hagiographies to disparaging demonization. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between and has unfortunately never been brought to light. Savarkar and his ideology stood as one of the strongest and most virulent opponents of Gandhi, his pacifist philosophy and the Indian National Congress. An alleged atheist and a staunch rationalist who opposed orthodox Hindu beliefs, encouraged inter-caste marriage and dining, and dismissed cow worship as mere superstition, Savarkar was, arguably, the most vocal political voice for the Hindu community through the entire course of India's freedom struggle. From the heady days of revolution and generating international support for the cause of India's freedom as a law student in London, Savarkar found himself arrested, unfairly tried for sedition, transported and incarcerated at the Cellular Jail, in the Andamans, for over a decade, where he underwent unimaginable torture. From being an optimistic advocate of Hindu-Muslim unity in his treatise on the 1857 War of Independence, what was it that transformed him in the Cellular Jail to a proponent of 'Hindutva', which viewed Muslims with suspicion? Drawing from a vast range of original archival documents across India and abroad, this biography in two parts-the first focusing on the years leading up to his incarceration and eventual release from the Kalapani-puts Savarkar, his life and philosophy in a new perspective and looks at the man with all his achievements and failings.

In the United States, education reform policy, particularly the reliance on large-scale, standardized testing, is a growing topic of national conversation and concern. An Illusion of Equity: The Legacy of Eugenics in Today's Education demonstrates how centuries of propaganda have led us to accept the idea that test scores indicate something so valuable about human beings that they should be used to organize society. Drawing on decades of experience as an educator, author Wendy Zagray Warren unpacks the origins of this practice, inviting us to probe the ideologies underlying testing procedures and score interpretation and to evaluate the rationale for using test scores as the sole markers for academic achievement. From the beginning, large-scale tests have produced scores divided by race and class. Initially, these results aligned with the eugenic ideology of its creators. Warren shows that while the rhetoric used to justify test-based policy has changed, the model used to produce test scores remains much the same. Therefore, so do the outcomes of test-based policies, which continue to reproduce and reinforce the existing social hierarchy of the United States. The hope of equity lies in educators charting new paths and scholars around the world who are dreaming new educational paradigms into being. Ultimately, Warren invites policymakers, educators, and parents to explore the richness of possibility when education is designed around the belief that every child is worthy of the opportunity to thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Flynn's new novel, Echoes of Glory centers on a fictitious Texas county that embraces its legends, but not its actual history. Set in the Reagan era, the novel exposes shared myths as lies and the truth, lacking all comfort. In his inimitable style Flynn paints a portrait of the denizens of the county who tacitly embrace the legend as all too human and all too frail. Overshadowed by the accomplishments of adjacent Doss County, Mills County clings to its legends—the legendary Mills brothers. One brother had died at the Alamo, one at Goliad, three had fought at San Jacinto. The three survivors marched into the center of Texas bringing with them stories of heroism and acorns from the San Jacinto battlefield. According to tradition, they planted an oak tree for each hero who had died at the Alamo. Then there was Timpson Smith, sole survivor of Second Platoon of Marine reserves, who had prevented the North Korean army from driving U.S. and U.N. forces into the sea. To honor their memory the county erected a monument, "Second to None," topped with the heroic figure of Timpson Smith. But there is a less heroic side of Mills County. When Deputy Sheriff Larry Maddin decides to run against Sheriff and Local Hero Timpson Smith, and a drama professor at the university announces that he will write a play depicting the true story of Second Platoon, many fear the dark underside of Mills County will be exposed.

Book excerpt: In this enthralling and atmospheric thriller, one young family’s dream of a better life is about to become a nightmare. Ben and Caroline Tierney and their two young boys are hoping to start over. Ben has hit a dead end with his new novel, Caroline has lost her banking job, and eight-year-old Charlie is being bullied at his Manhattan school. When Ben inherits land in the village of Swannhaven, in a remote corner of upstate New York, the Tierneys believe it’s just the break they need, and they leave behind all they know to restore a sprawling estate. But as Ben uncovers Swannhaven’s chilling secrets and Charlie ventures deeper into the surrounding forest, strange things begin to happen. The Tierneys realize that their new home isn’t the fresh start they needed . . . and that the village’s haunting saga is far from over. House of Echoes is a novel that shows how sometimes the ties that bind us are the only things that can keep us whole. Praise for House of Echoes “Warning: Brendan Duffy’s debut novel is not for scaredy-cats. If you live for heart-racing chills, this thriller—about a young family that packs up their life in Manhattan for a spot in upstate New York (that turns out to be haunted, of course)—is already calling out your name.”—Refinery29 “Already drawing comparisons to Stephen King’s The Shining, Brendan Duffy’s debut novel offers chills without sacrificing character development. But be warned: you might want to leave the lights on for this one.”—Paste “Shades of The Shining are spattered through Brendan Duffy’s debut novel—a large isolated house, a young family, nutty and somewhat supernatural goings-on—but House of Echoes grounds itself in different ways for an enjoyable read.”—USA Today “An exquisite novel . . . expertly plotted, beautifully written . . . It’s complex, deft and, once you dive in, you want to stay in this often-scary world. . . . This is a book that deserves to be savored.”—The Star-Ledger “Duffy’s debut is a riveting blend of horror and family drama. The remote location, creepy townspeople and the village’s savage history produce a harrowing tale that keeps readers quickly turning the pages. As this complex family struggles with mental illness and their child’s isolation, their redemption comes in the revelation that they can survive anything together.”—RT Book Reviews (4 1/2 stars) “House of Echoes is one of those stories where you know something bad is going to happen, but you hope it won’t. It’s one you’ll remember long after reading the last page.”—New York Journal of Books

Book excerpt: The Wraithwood's Whisper: A Tale of Forgotten Souls and Unseen Shadows In the heart of the Wraithwood, where reality merged with magic and the unexplained, an eclipse cast an ominous darkness. Adam Smith and his companions, standing amidst the ancient trees, felt the triumph of lifting the curse sour into a choking fog of dread. Something had stirred with the alignment of the stars, something that whispered its disdain through the shivering leaves. Their hard-won peace shuddered beneath the weight of an anticipated peril. Marion, her voice the thread connecting worlds, intuited a harrowing truth -- the forest's release from one torment may have awakened another. The woods, abuzz with new apprehension, demanded of its protectors a readiness for the unknown trials that lurked in twilight's embrace. The eclipse was no mere celestial whim; it was a forewarning. A darkness retreated, yet as the eclipse's shadow passed, a silence bore down. It clawed at the victory, suggesting their quest was not complete. What of those vanished, swallowed by enigmas, surrendering their echoes to an eternity among the Wraithwood's murmurs? The group, bound by a collective resolve, faced an unaddressed mystery: the fate of the long-lost souls they had not yet returned to the light. Their journey had cleansed the land, but could they restore its heart fully if whispers of the vanished remained unanswered? As the celebratory songs of mythical creatures succumbed to the woodland's troubling hush, Dr. Rivera proposed a séance. Together, amid the forest's central sanctum, surrounded by the remnants of supernatural struggle, they lit candles that flickered like the feeble hope of the forgotten. Holding hands, they embarked on a spectral summoning, casting their call deep into the shroud between realms. The spirits, liberated from the inescapable in-between, embraced the light cast by their living counterparts, dissipating into tranquillity. Clara, the woman whose legacy had steered them through shadows, offered a glance that bridled a thousand unspoken gratitudes before stepping through the luminescent threshold. In releasing the ghastly remnants, the Wraithwood exhaled. The land was not only purified of curses; its ethereal inhabitants had found solace, passing through the lanterns' beacon into the dawn beyond. Yet the shadow's omen lingered, an insidious whisper probing the fringes of their consciousness; they were acutely aware that this respite could be temporary. They conferred amongst themselves; their respite might be fleeting. A vigil had to be established -- guarding against the return of darkness, prepared for the eventualities of an inscrutable future. In the newfound silence spoke a tacit pact: they would remain the sentinels of the Wraithwood, the human bulwark against an unassailable dusk. Their departure from the séance's solemnity was a silent testament to their unwavering guardianship. Shadows behind them not omens of threats, but proof of light prevailing and unity strengthened. For in the heart of Wraithwood, amid the echoes of those who had vanished, lay the unshakable truth that light endures, that forgotten whispers find voice, and that even in the darkest of woods, there will always be those who stand firm for the dawn.
