Book Synopsis Never Fall Down by : Patricia McCormick
Download or read book Never Fall Down written by Patricia McCormick and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Book Award nominee from two-time finalist Patricia McCormick is the unforgettable story of Arn Chorn-Pond, who defied the odds to survive the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979 and the labor camps of the Khmer Rouge. Based on the true story of Cambodian advocate Arn Chorn-Pond, and authentically told from his point of view as a young boy, this is an achingly raw and powerful historical novel about a child of war who becomes a man of peace. It includes an author's note and acknowledgments from Arn Chorn-Pond himself. When soldiers arrive in his hometown, Arn is just a normal little boy. But after the soldiers march the entire population into the countryside, his life is changed forever. Arn is separated from his family and assigned to a labor camp: working in the rice paddies under a blazing sun, he sees the other children dying before his eyes. One day, the soldiers ask if any of the kids can play an instrument. Arn's never played a note in his life, but he volunteers. This decision will save his life, but it will pull him into the very center of what we know today as the Killing Fields. And just as the country is about to be liberated, Arn is handed a gun and forced to become a soldier. Supports the Common Core State Standards.

Book excerpt: ""My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."" Luke 1:46 & 47 We live in a world where life often seems to have no rhyme or reason. There is so much discord, hatred and confusion. With this lack of harmony, we may ask ourselves, ÒWhere is the Lord our Divine Composer?Ó Then, above all the chaos in the stillness of your heart, there are words so loud you need to listen; there may even be a desire to write them down. It is not the volume I describe, but the intensity of awareness that comes with God's Òstill small voiceÓ which billows, ÒYou are not alone.Ó His Voice is incomparable, for it permeates with His Love. God's Love like a mighty wave saturating your soul, like a rolling flame consuming your heart. And to His Love we all must respond...

Book Synopsis Echoes and Reflections by : SunHee Kim Gertz
Download or read book Echoes and Reflections written by SunHee Kim Gertz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines tales from The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) and from The Lais by the French poet Marie de France (fl. mid-to late twelfth century) to explore a paradox: how can a vibrant, complex, and timeless vision be conveyed in convention-informed and time-bound language? Marie plays against Ovid’s tales to probe the dilemma, thereby echoing Ovid who does the same to the canonical literary monuments of his day. Both poets suggest that poetry can avoid the flattening effect of monumental canonizing not only by the creative use of literary echoes, but also by shifting perspectives on the conventional, which in turn, can encourage readers to see reflections of many stories in any given tale. Ovid and Marie suggest and encourage in this manner by presenting literary love’s topoi and traditional lovers from a variety of metaliterary perspectives, thereby eliciting active readerly memory as well as providing the opportunity to see the conventional afresh, activity that allows even canonical texts to become living memorials.

Book Synopsis Echoes of the Sunbird by : Donald Burness
Download or read book Echoes of the Sunbird written by Donald Burness and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a broad overview of the work of seven of Africa's leading poets. Five of them have received international recognition: Niyi Osundare and Chinua Achebe, the Commonwealth Poetry Prize; Osundare and Antonio Jacinto, the Noma Prize; and Jose Craveirinha, the Camoes Prize. The poems concern political, personal, and social themes and are written with aesthetic simplicity and lyricism. The contributors believe that poets, rather than being exiles from their communities, are prophets, seers, and singers and have a place in everyday life. Most of the poems have been published previously. Several, however, are new, and their appearance in this volume along with an introductory essay written by each poet, makes this anthology important, original, and fresh.

In this groundbreaking graphic novel, meet JIM AKUTSU, the inspiration for John Okada’s No-No Boy, who refuses to be drafted from the camp at Minidoka when classified as a non-citizen, an enemy alien; HIROSHI KASHIWAGI, who resists government pressure to sign a loyalty oath at Tule Lake, but yields to family pressure to renounce his U.S. citizenship; and MITSUYE ENDO, a reluctant recruit to a lawsuit contesting her imprisonment, who refuses a chance to leave the camp at Topaz so that her case could reach the U.S. Supreme Court. Based upon painstaking research, We Hereby Refuse presents an original vision of America’s past with disturbing links to the American present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Heidegger's 1941–1942 lecture course on Friedrich Hölderlin's hymn, "Remembrance," delivered immediately following his confrontation with Nietzsche, lays out a detailed plan for the interpretation of Hölderlin's poetry in which remembrance is a central concern. With its emphasis on the "free use of the national" and the "holy of the fatherland," the course marks an important progression in Heidegger's political thought. In addition to its startlingly innovative analyses of greeting, the festive, and the dream, the text provides Heidegger's fullest elaboration of the structure of commemorative thinking in relationship to time and the possibility of an "other beginning." This English translation by William McNeill and Julia Ireland completes the series of Heidegger's major lecture courses on Hölderlin.
