Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The important Buddhist doctrine of the two truths—conventional truths and ultimate truths—is the subject of this book. It examines how the doctrine evolved within early Buddhism from efforts to make sense of contradictions within the collected sayings of the Buddha. The two truths, however, came to refer not primarily to statements or language, but to the realities to which statements or language referred. As such, the doctrine of the two truths became one through which Buddhist philosophers focused their efforts to elaborate an abhidharma, a higher teaching which allowed them to explain how the mind apprehends and misapprehends the world, how it attaches itself to objects that do not exist in and of themselves, thereby creating suffering. In effect, the doctrine then evolved into a distinction between different sorts of objects rather than a distinction between different sorts of statements. The doctrine of the truths understood in this way played a key role in the articulation of the Mahayana by its followers in distinguishing it from what they called Hinayana, especially in defining the central ideas of selflessness and emptiness. Unlike prior books on this topic which concentrate on the doctrine within the context of the Mahayana, Buescher's examines it within the context of the Hinayana. Tibetan Buddhist syntheses of Buddhist doctrine provide a fascinating perspective from which to compare the positions of the major Indian schools. Such works, however, often lack the historical perspective from which to discern the development of these positions.

Book excerpt: ‘Empty Sky’, which draws its title from Sylvia Plath’s ‘I talk to God but the sky is empty’, features the top emerging writers from UTS’ creative writing program and showcases a range of extraordinary works. This edition is honoured to be introduced by writer, editor and activist Bri Lee, the award-winning author of Eggshell Skull. The smoky sky is empty: a deficit of light and sound, devoid of sentience…or is it? Our world is tumultuous – from political upheaval to environmental decay, the Earth is in the process of shifting and reforming. Technology surrounds us, encroaching. Society both evolves and regresses. 2020 was dealt a somewhat cruel hand: fires swept through Australia and the COVID-19 pandemic permeated every aspect of our lives. In one way or another, struggle is a part of us. These pieces depict precisely that. There is fantastic struggle against the self and the world and whoever is listening, and in this way, these works cry out to be read. They show that human lives are full: full of fighting and grief, full of compassion and joy. Full to the brim. The 34th UTS Writers’ Anthology: the 2020 collection of some of the best new writing – previously unpublished – from a student body with an incredible voice. Each year the UTS Writers’ Anthology showcases the best work from one of Australia’s most prestigious writing programs. This year’s anthology includes prose, fiction, poetry and screenplays from talented emerging writers including Christine Afoa, Ruth Armstrong, Sara Borman, Sally Breen, Alex Bulahoff, Shana Chandra, Daniel Comensoli, Olivia Costa, Daniel Date, Mark Gerts, Shoshana Gottlieb, Echo He, Sydney Khoo, ZA Knowles, Sam McAlpine, Helen Meany, David Naylor, Joseph Schwarzkopf, Amy Shapiro, Jack Cameron Stanton, EM Tasker and Tanya Vavilova.

Book excerpt: You Don't Invite the Devil in by Chance; You Must Play with Intent. Taking place ten years before the events of Bleed More, Bodymore, Ralph Reagan is the drummer for his best friend's band, Bad Ass Idiot Train. Baltimore locals know it for the unique sound, the wild concerts, and the even wilder frontman, KC. The two are as close as brothers, but couldn't be more different. Ralph is quiet, laidback, and doesn't seem to fit in with the lifestyle while the only appropriate way to describe KC is hellion. Riots, street brawls, and fierce resistance to authority leaves a path of destruction in KC's wake. While trouble can be avoided for a time, it can't be entirely dodged. The ghosts of KC's past haunt him through the handprints left in his house, the voices in his head, and the way Baltimore calls out to him in the graffiti. The voices call endlessly, hoping to tempt KC into killing the person beside him who doesn't belong. Rage and regret guide his hands to Ralph's neck after a concert. His saving grace is KC's defiance. Ralph escapes with his life, but KC does not. Ralph's mourning the loss of his brother and the only family he's ever known when he receives a phone call from the last person he expected: KC. Not dead, but waiting to be picked up from a nearby Taco Bell. Reunion proves something's off with KC. He's bloodthirsty, angry, and shorter-tempered than ever. Though he wants to continue where they left off, it appears as though no one recognizes him, but Ralph and their bassist. Ralph will do anything it takes to make things go back to normal, even if it means giving up a part of himself. Meanwhile, the trail of bodies he's leaving puts Ralph at the center of a detective's crosshairs, and the unfathomable spirit inhabiting Baltimore hasn't given up on its mission to find Ralph.

Book excerpt: 150 years after the end of the Civil War, the United States falls into another Civil War. The Second Great War leaves the US population and landscape decimated and out of many, comes one: The Nation. Four generations has passed and life in The Nation is perfect. The Provinces are picturesque, there is no crime, and at seventeen years old everyone chooses a Vocation in order to contribute their fair share to society. Lucia Giroux's Vocation Ceremony is fast approaching and her life seems to be headed in the right direction. Her childhood best friend, Jack Delante, has expressed interest in making her his girlfriend and she is getting ready to announce her Vocation as Record Keeper, following in her father's footsteps, working in The Vaults surrounded by her favorite authors and poets. But when Lucia starts working at The Vaults it isn't quite what she expected. First, there's the incredibly good-looking and intelligent Nicolas Pernelli, her father's assistant in the Historical Department who he's never mentioned. Next, she finds out that her father has been working on a secret research project. Lastly, Lucia meets Pearl Radita, her immediate supervisor in the Literature Department and things really begin to get weird. Pearl assigns Lucia to be part of a team working to decipher a poem called The Light, which seems to predict a Third Great War. Just as their analysis gets under way Lucia receives a message that changes everything. When Lucia's mother suddenly falls ill, and she tells her father of the message, he sends her and Nic on a dangerous journey to the Farmlands to find out more information. Lucia's idyllic world is turned upside down as she learns not only The Nation, but her parents have been keeping secrets. Lucia wants answers. How far is she willing to go to get them?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctrines boast of ancient creatures that abode with Deity - beings far more subtle than naïve humanity might even begin to comprehend. Entities far older still: that might well have been in attendance when the Firmament parted and Earth came to be - beasts that may well have ever stared knowingly into the abyss: ere mankind grasped its own mortality or pondered implications of the grave. Ghastly brutes: already ancient before timid humanity ever thought to rise up across the desecrated land – eternal sentinels of the Celestial that may just as easily divine the incomprehensible as deduce the inexplicable. Beyond the ken of humanity: they recognize and disregard the nameless horrors from forgotten pantheons of which all men and women still dare not speak. Mankind’s prayers might well have been answered eons ago: what with humanity never being perceptive enough to ever notice. Taking to our knees each night to beg for wisdom; when, unbeknownst to all, Wisdom eventually grew tired of waiting for humanity and simply chose to abandon us. Alone ... to forever wonder if we ever truly were the lords of our own creation. Oblivious, we paint ghoulish images with our pens: imprisoning the finest and frailest of human character within the confines of feeble words where each is exaltedly whisked to Eternity upon the brazen Wings of Lions.

Book excerpt: In his sensational novel The Descent, Jeff Long created a world of stunning terror and adventure, "an imaginative tour de force" (Jon Krakauer). Now he imagines a scenario so vivid, so haunting, it anchors his place among storytelling masters. YEAR ZERO An archaeological manhunt is raging in the holy land -- a hunt for the historical Jesus. For Nathan Lee Swift, a young American field researcher and expectant father, the line between noble discovery and the plunder of ruins is sacred -- until the night he crosses it. At a Roman landfill beneath the crucifixion grounds known as Golgotha, Nathan Lee yields to his professor's greed and turns common grave robber. His world -- his unborn daughter -- seems lost to him. Hundreds of miles away, on the remote Greek island of Corfu, a wealthy collector pries open his latest black-market purchase -- a fourteen-inch holy relic containing a vial of blood dating back to the first century -- and unleashes a two-thousand-year-old plague. As the pandemic explodes from the Mediterranean basin and threatens to devour humankind, Nathan Lee gets a chance at redemption. He embarks on an Odyssean journey back to the United States to find his family. Skirting the edges of the world, Nathan Lee's path finally leads him to New Mexico, where the greatest minds of science have converged at Los Alamos to find a vaccine. There Nathan Lee meets Miranda Abbot, a nineteen-year-old prodigy. As the cure continues to elude them, Miranda launches a desperate final strategy: the use of human lab rats cloned from the year zero. Nathan Lee, the thief of bones, comes face-to-face with men made from the very relics he looted, one of whom claims to be Jesus Christ, but may also be Patient Zero. Combining the scientific precision of The Andromeda Strain with the intensity of classic adventure epics, Jeff Long takes readers on a riveting voyage through the rubble of earthquake-torn Jerusalem, the serenity of the high Himalayas, and the eerie sanctuary of Los Alamos. With Long's characteristic originality, Year Zero races against the apocalyptic clock, creating a maze of twists, astonishing atmosphere, and the clash of science and faith.

Book excerpt: Best known for his groundbreaking and influential work in Buddhist philosophy, Mark Siderits is the pioneer of “fusion” or “confluence philosophy", a boldly systematic approach to doing philosophy premised on the idea that rational reconstruction of positions in one tradition in light of another can sometimes help address perennial problems and often lead to new and valuable insights. Exemplifying the many virtues of the confluence approach, this collection of essays covers all core areas of Buddhist philosophy, as well as topics and disputes in contemporary Western philosophy relevant to its study. They consider in particular the ways in which questions concerning personal identity figure in debates about agency, cognition, causality, ontological foundations, foundational truths, and moral cultivation. Most of these essays engage Siderits’ work directly, building on his pathbreaking ideas and interpretations. Many deal with issues that have become a common staple in philosophical engagements with traditions outside the West. Their variety and breadth bear testimony to the legacy of Siderits’ impact in shaping the contemporary conversation in Buddhist philosophy and its reverberations in mainstream philosophy, giving readers a clear sense of the remarkable scope of his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I reside in Monrovia, California. I was born in Washington DC in 1939. My parents came to the U.S. as immigrants; Mama from Germany and Daddy from France. We moved to Miami, Florida when I was nine. Every year we would go to the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods New Hampshire for the summer. When I was 18 I went to Barry College and met my Husband Howard. We married and had two children. I have always loved Poetry because of my Mother who opened many worlds to me. My emotions came from my French Father who was what every Father should be. He took care, not only of us, but of his brothers and sisters his entire life. I dedicate this book and others that may follow to them. They were my rocks and I will always love them. Many things are created in a lifetime. Memories are one of the most precious for they can never be taken from you. These are some of my memories and feelings that they created.
