A clinical pediatric cardiologist is expected to be adept at the non-invasive diagnosis of congenital heart disease and those who plan to specialize in echocardiography will need to have knowledge of advanced techniques. Echocardiography in Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease addresses the needs of trainees and practitioners in this field, filling a void caused by the lack of material in this fast-growing area. This new title comprehensively covers the echocardiographic assessment of congenital heart disease, from the fetus to the adult, plus acquired heart disease in children. Topics covered include: ultrasound physics laboratory set-up a protocol for a standard pediatric echocardiogram quantitative methods of echocardiographic evaluation, including assessment of diastolic function in depth coverage of congenital cardiovascular malformations acquired pediatric heart disease topics of special interest, such as 3D echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and fetal echocardiography The approach of this book is a major advancement for educational materials in the field of pediatric cardiology, and greatly enhances the experience for the reader. An accompanying DVD with moving images of the subjects covered in the textbook will further enhance the learning experience.

Book excerpt: Congenital malformations of the heart are often dismissed as a form of complex heart disease, which is too difficult to understand, and is best referred to the specialists. The authors of this handbook, however, aim to dispel this myth. The advent of cross-sectional and, more recently, three-dimensional echocardiography, enables the structural malformations to be visualised virtually non-invasively. Without a thorough understanding of the arrangement of cardiac structures, interpretation of these images can be very frustrating, not to mention having to cope with difficult terminology. Contrary to popular belief, however, the reader does not require a knowledge of cardiac embryology in order to understand the morphology of a malformed heart. This book takes the reader through the subject in a straightforward fashion, beginning with recognition of the normal cardiac chambers, progressing through the process of analysing the layout of the chambers in a sequential way, and then dealing with the more common cardiac defects in turn. Each chapter deals with the anatomical arrangement illustrated with diagrams and complemented with echocardiographic images of the most important cross-sections. The text is succinct, and is accompanied by numerous diagrams and cross-sectional echocardiographic images of the highest quality. The most common defects are described chapter by chapter, emphasising the salient anatomical features.

Book excerpt: Transesophageal Echocardiography for Congenital Heart Disease represents a unique contribution as the only contemporary reference to focus exclusively on the clinical applications of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in congenital heart disease (CHD). Written by numerous prominent specialists and renowned leaders in the field, it presents a comprehensive, modern, and integrated review of the subject in light of the cumulative experience and most recent advances in the technology. Topics related to CHD include: (1) physics and instrumentation of TEE, particularly as they apply to the structural evaluation; (2) specialized aspects of the examination, with emphases on technical considerations pertinent to both pediatric and adult patients with congenital cardiovascular pathology; (3) segmental approach to diagnosis and functional assessment; (4) extensive discussion of the TEE evaluation of the many anomalies encompassing the CHD spectrum; (5) use of the imaging modality in the perioperative and interventional settings; and (6) important aspects of 3D TEE evaluation. Richly illustrated by more than 700 figures/illustrations and 400 videos, this textbook will serve as an indispensable resource for all who use TEE in the care of both children and adults with CHD, from the novice to the expert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is intended for the first teaching text in this field. It will describe the new concepts, methodology, and application of real-time 3 dimensional echocardiography for congenital heart diseases. It will concentrate on a step-wised approach for each and every major CHD Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in young infants. This monograph will be the first text to focus on a relatively new technology, i.e. real time 3- dimensional echocardiography, and its history, technology, approaches, normal study, and clinical application in a variety of congenital heart diseases from fetuses to adults. This technology first became available around the turn of this century. In the last few years, this field has seen rapid progress in technological advancement and expanding current and potential clinical applications. This technology is particularly suited for congenital heart disease in which there is a clear need for more clear and accurate delineation of the congenital heart defects from a 3- dimensional perspective for diagnosis, assessment, and prognosis of these defects. Although there are two monographs for real-time 3D echocardiography adults with heart diseases (Shiota, and Nanda), mostly coronary heart disease, valve heart disease, etc, there is no published monograph related to real-time 3D echocardiography in children with congenital heart disease. This project will fill a gap for potentially a diverse audience including pediatric cardiologists, congenial heart surgeons, anesthesiologists, high risk Ob/Gyn specialists, neonatologists, adult congenital disease specialists, pediatric residents, fellows, nurses, physician assistants, and other health care professionals.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac catheterization has long been a central diagnostic modality in the evaluation of children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease, and in children with acquired heart disease. Over the past two decades, transcatheter interventions have become equally important in the treatment of pediatric and congenital heart disease. Some transcatheter therapies have become established as the standard of care for congenital cardiovascular anomalies previously managed surgically, others serve to supplement surgery in the integrated management of complex lesions, and still others are in their infancy, as pediatric interventional cardiology continues to advance in step with the broader field of pediatric cardiovascular medicine. Since the previous edition of this book, new technologies and techniques have been introduced to the field of pediatric interventional cardiology, much has been learned about established transcatheter therapies, and there has been a substantial increase in the volume of published data on outcomes of transcatheter procedures in congenital and pediatric heart disease. With increasing experience, the role of interventional catheterization has become solidified as an integral component of the comprehensive management of patients with essentially all forms of congenital heart disease. Cardiac catheterization has also become established as a distinct subspecialty within the discipline of pediatric cardiology, and at many centers has become the purview of cardiologists who have received specialized training in interventional catheterization and whose practice is focused on catheterization. This book is targeted to trainees and established interventional cardiologists alike, and is intended as a comprehensive reference for the clinical practice of diagnostic and interventional cardiology in pediatric and congenital heart disease. In the organization of this book, a combination of procedure-based and problem-based approaches has been employed. The structure of the book has been updated to make it more reader friendly, chapters have been added to address new techniques and problems in the field, and greater emphasis has been placed on evaluation of outcomes of transcatheter interventions in congenital heart disease. Section 1 covers the fundamentals of cardiac catheterization, with chapters devoted to pre-procedure patient evaluation, sedation and anesthesia, vascular access and related issues, catheterization equipment ands its use, hemodynamic evaluation, angiography, radiation and radiation safety, and echocardiography in the catheterization lab. Sections 2 through 4 include procedure-based chapters that are organized according to the technical type of intervention. Section 2 is devoted to transcatheter interventions for obstructive lesions, including valvar stenoses and vascular obstructions. Section 3 includes chapters that cover interventions to close various pathologic intracardiac communications and vascular anomalies. Section 4 includes chapters covering interventions performed to create or enlarge intracardiac communications, as well as other interventions. Section 5 focuses on the applications of catheterization and transcatheter interventions in the evaluation and management of specific patient populations. This problem-based or patient-based focus, which is substantially expanded from the previous edition of the book, reflects the expanding role of catheterization in the comprehensive management of pediatric and congenital heart disease, and addresses emerging applications of transcatheter interventions, including management of the patient receiving extracorporeal circulatory support, hybrid transcatheter-surgical interventions, and prenatal cardiac intervention. Section 6 includes two chapters that cover outcome assessment and regulatory issues pertinent to the pediatric cardiology in general and interventional cardiology in particular.
