Book excerpt: Bestselling author and financial guru Harry Dent shows why we’re facing a “great deflation” after five years of desperate stimulus — and what to do about it now Throughout his long career as an economic forecaster, Harry Dent has relied on a not-so-secret weapon: demographics. Studying the predictable things people do as they age is the ultimate tool for understanding trends. For instance, Dent can tell a client exactly when people will spend the most on potato chips. And he can explain why our economy has risen and fallen with the peak spending of generations, and why we now face a growing demographic cliff with the accelerating retirement of the Baby Boomers around the world. Dent predicted the impact of the Boomers hitting their highest growth in spending in the 1990s, when most economists saw the United States declining. And he anticipated the decline of Japan in the 1990s, when economists were proclaiming it would overtake the U.S. economy. But now, Dent argues, the fundamental demographics have turned against the United States and will hit more countries ahead. Inflation rises when a larger than usual block of younger people enter the workforce, and it wanes when large numbers of older people retire, downsize their homes, and cut their spending. The mass retirement of the Boomers won’t just hold back inflation; it and massive debt deleveraging will actually cause deflation—weakening the economy the most from 2014 into 2019. Dent explores the implications of his controversial predictions. He offers advice on retirement planning, health care, real estate, education, investing, and business strategies. For instance . . . BUSINESSES should get lean and mean now. Identify segments that you can clearly dominate and sell off or shut down others. If you don’t, the economy will do it for you, more painfully and less profitably. INVESTORS should sell stocks by mid-January 2014 and look to buy them back in 2015 or later at a Dow as low as 5,800. FAMILIES should wait to buy real estate in areas where home prices have gone back to where the bubble started in early 2000. GOVERNMENTS need to stop the endless stimulus that creates more bubbles and kills the middle class, and should assist in restructuring the unprecedented debt bubble of 1983–2008. Dent shows that if you take the time to understand demographic data, using it to your advantage isn’t all that difficult. By following his suggestions, readers will be able to find the upside to the downturn and learn how to survive and prosper during the most challenging years ahead.

That’s no way to invest. Former investment banker and hedge fund manager Hilary Kramer advocates a different approach: GameChanger Investing. Based on her thirty-plus years managing billions of investment dollars, Kramer—a globally recognized futurist—shows you how to make money and stay ahead of the wave in a constantly changing world. As long as people keep innovating, dreaming, and executing, great companies will grow and create wealth. But not all growth companies are created equal. From fintech to food-tech, information warfare to the Internet of Things, Kramer identifies the specific technologies, trends, and companies that are both changing the world and poised for significant stock appreciation. GameChanger Investing is visionary investing, but it’s not speculation. Kramer identifies companies with rock-solid fundamentals ready for catalysts that will turn them into major disruptors. Instead of fighting economic disruption or pretending it doesn’t exist, she helps you put disruption to work for your portfolio. Embrace the future and invest in tomorrow’s GameChanging billion-dollar trends. The secrets are in the pages of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey has a long history of adapting to a changing economic climate. From its colonial origins to the present day, New Jersey's economy has continuously and successfully confronted the challenges and uncertainties of technological and demographic change, placing the state at the forefront of each national and global economic era. Based on James W. Hughes and Joseph J. Seneca’s nearly three-decade-long Rutgers Regional Report series, New Jersey’s Postsuburban Economy presents the issues confronting the state and brings to the forefront ideas for meeting these challenges. From the rural agricultural and natural resource based economy and lifestyle of the seventeenth century to today’s postindustrial, suburban-dominated, automobile-dependent economy, the economic drivers which were considered to be an asset are now viewed by many to be the state’s greatest disadvantage. On the brink of yet another transformation, this one driven by a new technology and an internet based global economy, New Jersey will have to adapt itself yet again—this time to a postsuburban digital economy. Hughes and Seneca describe the forces that are now propelling the state into yet another economic era. They do this in the context of historical economic transformations of New Jersey, setting out the technological, demographic, and transportation shifts that defined and drove them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Alice DiNizo for Readers' Favorite The incredible steamship named Titanic sank on her maiden voyage across the Atlantic on April 15, 1912, and books have been written and movies produced about this tragic steamship disaster. Troy Veenstra has written "Titanic: Echo of the Dying Confession" which covers the Titanic's demise but with a different slant. In journal format, the narrator of this chilling version tells of how he sought revenge for his father's tragic loss of his ownership of the famed White Star Lines when the White Star board sells the shipping line to American millionaire J.P. Morgan. The narrator is angered, incensed that his father, whom he worshiped, is treated badly by business associates and the building of the super steamships, the Olympic, the Titanic, and the Gigantic are to be built. The rest is well-known history. "Titanic: Echo of the Dying Confession" is a unique work of fiction about the Titanic. Using italics to convey conversation, the author has the narrator transcribing his thoughts as he is dying. Once young, the narrator is now an old and grieving man as he sits on his ocean-side estate and gazes upon the Atlantic Ocean which he refers to as a "massive rolling grave site". He thinks of the revenge he sought and the pain it caused those who perished. This journal is long, descriptive and very Victorian, as befits the memories of a gentleman born in 1856. On page 199, the narrator says that his memoirs as contained in this story are "the longest confession of one man's transgressions ever written upon paper. But the writing is just how a man of those times would express himself, and the characters of both fictional and real people of the Titanic are true to the times and to history. Titanic fans and most of the others will love reading "Titanic: Echo of the Dying Confession."
