Book Synopsis Northern Europe and the Future of the EU by : Helge Hoibraaten
Download or read book Northern Europe and the Future of the EU written by Helge Hoibraaten and published by BWV Verlag. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HauptbeschreibungThe current relationship between the Nordic countries and the European Union appears complex and confusing. Although Denmark, in 1973, and Sweden and Finland, in 1995, joined the European Union, the entry of Norway into the Union was rejected in the plebiscites of 1972 and 1994. Furthermore, Nordic EU members enjoy permanent exceptions to their integration into the EU: Denmark and Sweden, like the U.K., have declined to become part of the monetary union. Finland is essentially the only Nordic country that entered the EU without substantial exceptions. A membership bid from Iceland was unthinkable; after the fi nancial crisis - which is not the topic of this book - Iceland applied for membership in 2010 and has been in discussions with the European Commission ever since. In other words: the European Union divides Nordic societies, which has resulted in a series of national exceptions to the integration process. Taken together, these exceptions have created an integration process whose overall geometry is contradictory and paradoxical. Considering this melange, this book will discuss the actual state of Nordic integration into the EU from many different perspectives and illuminate future developments in the fi eld of integration. Where is the North relative to Europe today? How can the geometry of Northern Europe's integration, developed over a long time, be characterised? What are the challenges that threaten further development of Nordic-European relationships?

Book Synopsis Prospective Europeans by : John Redmond
Download or read book Prospective Europeans written by John Redmond and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the future shape of Europe in the post 1992, post Maastricht era. The Community has been using the single market programme and the Maastricht treaty as a means of deflecting, or at least delaying dealing with, the attentions of its immediate neighbours. The various initiatives that have been undertaken - the European Economic Area with EFTA, the Europe agreements with Poland, Hungary and Czecho/Slovakia and the redirection of the EC's Mediterranean policy - have provided only partial and temporary responses. The fundamental issue of where the boundary of the European Community should end remains to be settled. In this book, the authors provide an examination of the underlying issues and the current state of play regarding likely future enlargement of the EC, and consider each of the principal, actual, or potential applicant countries in turn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the political future of the European Economic Area (EEA). The paper starts by providing a brief overview of the EEA (Section 2). Next, it discusses the factors affecting the future of the EEA from the vantage-point of Norway (Section 3). The Norwegian political system contains a set of gag-rules to prevent changes in the status quo of EU affiliation. What such gag rules imply for the EEA's future is important to address. Thereafter, the paper discusses the factors affecting the future of the EEA from the vantage-point of the EU (Section 4). Penultimately, the paper considers possible trajectories for the EU-level's development. Conclusively, the paper provides a brief assessment of the similarities and differences between the EEA and such alternatives as EU-UKTCA, the Swiss Model, and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA) (Section 5).

Book Synopsis Moored to the Continent by : Mark Baimbridge
Download or read book Moored to the Continent written by Mark Baimbridge and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there an alternative to EU membership? What if Britain left the EU? Would it be a disastrous or liberating experience? What trade relationships could the UK forge outside the EU? How would economic and social policy be different? What are the implications for sovereignty and democracy? This text seeks to answer these questions through exploring the future options for Britain regarding its relationship with the European Union (EU). To the British establishment it seemed obvious that joining the process towards greater European integration would reverse the UK's post-war declining political influence and accelerate its rate of economic growth. Consequently, a recurrent theme is that UK participation in ever closer European integration is widely perceived as ‘inevitable'. In contrast, this book both addresses and challenges this presumption by illustrating that a variety of alternative forms of relationship are feasible, together with outlining possible policy options that may compliment and enhance the consequences arising from the fundamental decision of how the UK determines its future.

Strongly oriented toward policy, the book contributes to the debate about the nature and future of European economic development, without neglecting the wider political ramifications of the issues.
