Download or read book Black Ivory written by R. M. Ballantyne and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-05-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Ivory is a story about two English castaways that shockingly find themselves amidst a group of truly loathsome slave traders. Although the cast of this narrative is entirely fictional, the numerous footnotes and references evidence the real-life basis of the story. A gut-wrenching tale of incredible suffering, despair and horror that will hold the reader tight in their seat. On the other hand it is also a tale of hope, love and a brighter future. A must read for those who set out to explore the darker side of our common world history. It brings to mind the critically acclaimed Ridley Scott movie 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro and Aaron Paul. R. M. Ballantyne was a Scottish writer specialising in juvenile fiction. He was born into a family of well-known printers and publishers in Edinburgh. At age 16 he travelled to Canada where he served with the Hudson's Bay Company for six years. He returned to Scotland in 1847 and published his first book the next year, 'Hudson's Bay: or Life in the Wilds of North America'. For several years he was employed by the publishing house Messrs Constable. But in 1856 he decided to leave the literature business. Instead he began writing a series of adventure stories for young readers.

Download or read book DisPossession written by Marlene Goldman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of Canada's contemporary fiction displays an eerie fascination with the supernatural. In DisPossession, Marlene Goldman investigates the links between spectral motifs and the social and historical influences that have shaped Canada. Incorporating both psychoanalytic and non-traditional methods of literary analysis, Goldman explores the ways in which spectral fictions are an expression of definitive Canadian experiences such as the clashes between invading settler and indigenous populations, the losses incurred by immigration and diaspora, and the alienation of the female body. In so doing, Goldman unearths some of the "ghosts" of Canadian society itself - old tensions and injustices that continue to haunt ethnic and gender relations. An important contribution to the discussion of the challenges posed by the Gothic to dominant literary, political, and social narratives, DisPossession asserts that Canadian spectral fictions have the power to alter accepted versions of Canadian history by invoking and troubling the process of generating collective memories.

Download or read book Black Ivory written by James Walvin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brutal story of African slavery in the British colonies of the West Indies and North America is told with clarity and compassion in this classic history. James Walvin explores the experiences which bound together slaves from diverse African backgrounds and explains how slavery transformed the tastes and economy of the Western world. Although written for readers with no prior knowledge of the subject, Walvins's account is based on detailed scholarship, drawing on a body of work from the USA, the West Indies and Britain. All aspects of African slavery up to 1776 are covered; the situation of women, flight and rebellion, disease and death, the conditions on the slave ships, the abolition campaign and much more. The narrative is enlivened and personalised by frequent reference to individual lives. For this revised edition, the author has incorporated recent scholarly findings and updated the notes and bibliography in order to keep the book current.
